First, I apologize for putting this topic here, instead of in Forum Suggestions or something.

I don't think creating a subforum for bands not in the Archive yet is good enough.  I know Maani will disagree, but the majority of posters have one main forum they frequent, it being this one, and they only check the others occasionally; usually if they put a topic there themselves.

As of right now, prog bands that aren't in the Archive get their topics moved to Non-Prog Music.  As if they aren't good enough to be called prog, and get tossed in with people discussing Elton John, Eminem, and Mariah Carey.  The proposed solution is to create yet another subforum for bands not yet added to the Archive.  I don't believe that's sufficient.

Wastefall, Spiraling, dredg, Coheed And Cambria, Steve Walsh, and COUNTLESS other artists are not included in the Archives, but their output is 100% prog by the standards of this site.  Is it really necessary to have a seperate forum to discuss things that haven't been processed yet, while Asia discussion is fine and dandy right here in this forum?  I think that's extremely uncool.

I'd like your thoughts on this issue...  I'm sure many of us have strong opinions one way or another on this, and I think this place, the forum where the majority of us frequently read/post, is the best place to get these opinions.

About forum habits: most of the times I visit the Active Topics, because I don't only want to look at the Prog Lounge, but at all the subcategories. I like to read about prog and non-prog, movies, books and discussions about beer.

But: I do have a preference for the Prog Lounge and the Prog Polls. And if most people visit only that, or most of the times, most Active Topics will be from those subcategories, I guess.

I have backed up his statement in other threads, Tony.  It is just a feeling I get here that most people do not want to talk about something that would actually require them to search for a band and download music.  There is even less of a chance of that happening if those discussions were removed from the main thread.  It is too bad too because people are missing out on some good music.  Not all new prog is limited to The Mars Volta, Radiohead, God Speed! You Black Emperor and Dream Theater.  But those are the only choices allowed it seems.

I think it is a good idea. Creating a seperate subforum would get a lot of bands acknowledged. But I think we can just leave out Coheed and Cambria .

If you have an opinion on this, please share.  If I'm wrong, and everyone's fine with a non-archive band that's fully prog being tossed into Non-Prog Music, I'll let it go and deal with it, but I really think this is an important issue...

Lots of time changes, intricate guitar parts over odd times, conceptual storyline that spreads across not just tracks, but ALBUMS, Geddy Lee vocals, many tracks that span around 10 minutes, lots of mood changes and dynamics...  what else do you bloody want?

I can say the same about Adagio or Heaven's Cry ... everybody has his favorite bands that are not yet included.

BTW: Currently the moved threads remain in the initial category for some time. Why not introduce a similar feature for threads started in other categories: Simply make them show in the main category.

Example:

Instead of "Moved: XYZ" it could show "New thread in Recommendations: XYZ".

People could start the threads in the appropriate category, and they would show for - say - 24 hours in the main prog lounge. It would basically appear to be like it is now, the only difference would be that the admins no longer have to move posts.

It's difficult to explain, what do you think?

Doesn't seem like a bad idea...  but we DO need to have a somewhat permanent solution for bands not yet in the archives being able to be discussed in an open, populated area.

Adagio and Heaven's Cry are both prog...  it's a damn shame we can't discuss them in this forum, even though I've been listening to Adagio for a couple years and it was just a *given* that they were prog...

I think that it would be very nice to have two categories for prog discussions about specific albums or bands. The separation between included and not (yet) included bands would simply clarify where to look for threads. The threads about prog bands and albums in the main lounge which you are referring to (Asia) would be moved to those categories, so the main discussion category would be much smaller. It would be for threads like "What is progressive music" or "do double albums suck", stuff like that.

The advantage of a more prominent "not yet included" category is that this would be the one category you would need to monitor in order to expand your musical horizon, as it would contain every band/album that some people - like you or me - consider prog, but aren't yet in the archive. As it is now, you have to monitor the main lounge, recommendations and Bands and Albums.

By creating those two categories and moving EVERY thread related to a specific band or album to those categories, they would become much more populated. I even think that the "not yet included" category would then be the most active one.

I tried to create an Adagio thread, posted audio samples, too, but it went unnoticed. I would at least have expected some bashing ...

I just replied to your Adagio thread...  but it's too bad I'd have to be a regular poster over at Recommendations to see it...

MO:

At the risk of sounding imperious yet again, we are not going to change the system here just because people are lazy.  And that's what it is: laziness.  If people do not want to check out other categories except their sole "favorite," ten that is their prerogative, but we are not going to change things in order to accommodate every whim and fancy.

A suggestion was made re separating out "Prog Bands Not Included in Prog Archives" "Non-Prog Music."  That is the suggestion on the table, and the only one that is being considered.  And I feel that it is a good one, and one that merits the consideration of the admin group.

So...

Yay or nay on that idea?  Because we are not going to "micro-finetune" Prog Archives to fit every little personal quirk of each member.

Sorry if that all sounds slightly harsh.  But this is really getting absurd.

Peace.

I don't think it's the worst idea in the world.  I just don't understand why "Prog Music Lounge" should only include prog bands that have been put in the archives, when it's obvious there is other prog music...  how long does it usually take for a band, with all info submitted, to the point where all that's required is some copy/pasting, to be added?

I'm for it (I suggested it in the other thread) ... I don't mind you sounding harsh, but I think you don't need to pay attention to those little "personal quirks" that we mention in posts now and then. You're absolutely right when you say that you can't please everyone, I'm a webmaster myself ... the most annoying bit is when people request something that had actually been done before in the past (even before these people joined) and was then removed (on user request).

I think that any comment we make about how the forum and website works should be regarded as a recommendation, even if it is written like a request. I don't have any problem with you ignoring it alltogether. After all, we're just GUESTS here ...

Peace, and THANKS!
