I don't pretend to have any extreme glam rock knowledge. I've been exploring the genre for the past few weeks and have really grown to adore T.Rex and Bowie. Roxy Music was fine, too. This is a terribly incomplete list. I'm mainly looking for suggestions outside of Bowie, Rex, Hoople, Roxy, and the New York Dolls. I didn't include Heroes or Low for some reason or another.

Wow, this triggers some nostalgic feelings. I started to get interested in pop and rock music when I was a wee teenage laddie of about 12 years old. You were right not to include Heroes or Low: Bowie may have been a glam rock artist for some time, but these albums were of a later date: the real glam rock years were from 1971 to 1974.

Some other glam rock artists of the period of whom most were of a lesser artistic level than the ones you mentioned: The Sweet, Middle of the Road, Slade, David Cassidy (many girls of my age were in love with him Cry), The Osmonds, Alice Cooper, Gary Glitter. These crowded the singles charts in those days.

At that time I did not listen to albums yet. This started with Pink Floyd and turned me into prog.

BTW, my vote goes to Hunky Dory.

I forgot to include Cooper. I figured him more of a hard rocker, but to not include his material from School's Out to Welcome to my Nightmare would be foolish.

I've been meaning to hear many of these albums but haven't, therefore I vote for Aladdin Sane.

Of these I will go for Electric Warrior.  But Bowie could easily get my vote.

From a later time I quite like Hanoi Rocks who were basically responsible for many a band in the eighties

Personally I have to go for Tanx and Ziggy Stardust.

Sparks is okey from what I have heard (and he is glam rock)

the first Roxy album is glam rock with RiO elements, Ziggy Stardust is what it is a statement of rock and roll, but also Elton Johns album Don't Shoot me Im only the Piano Player, and Captain Fantastic is glam rock.

Bowie - Ziggy Stardust  (an all-time top twenty rock album for me)
Cooper - Killer
Mott the Hoople - The Hoople
Bowie - Aladin Sane
T-Rex - Electric Warrior
Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
Cooper - Love it to Death
Roxy Music - Prairie Life
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
Roxie Music - For Your Pleasure

The Sparks were one of the best bands in the genre. How could I forget to mention them? This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us (1974) is one of my favourite hits ever.

For Your Pleasure from the list, but leaving out Sweet is a bit of a shame.

On a similar vein, a long forgotten band and a shade of a Sweet clone Son Of A Gun won TV talent show "New Faces" then scored a complete "miss" with their Phil Wainman produce debut single "Maison De L'Amour" and then disapeared into obscurity. Pity really because it wasn't a bad single. I would post it here but the muppet who uploaded the track to YouTube accompanied it with a cheesecake glamour slideshow so it's NSFW, so be warned, here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZKT4zdbHwc" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZKT4zdbHwc

Early incarnation of Smokie weren't bad as an early Sweet clone either (called Smokey then, name change because Smokey Robinson threw a tantrum), 'twas later they turned rubbish :

I like the later Todd Rungren produced Remote Control although it doesn't really have much to do with Glam Rock. The Tubes were a hard band to put a label on.

I think that in the hayday of GlamRock albums weren't as important as singles. Thus a lot of GlamRock-albums were mere compilations of singles. I would never have dreamed about buying an album by Gary Glitter, The Glitter Band, Alvin Stardust (he deserves to be mentioned) or Sweet. If you liked the singles, you liked the singles (and to name just one example: The Sweet had some surprising Hardrock-numbers as B-sides of their singles. Im talking vinyl, of course).

I voted for Bowie and Ziggy Stardust, one of the most important (concept!) albums of the 70s.

Sweet album's (from Sweet FA onwards) are worth buying since they are more hardrock than their Chin/Chap glam singles would have you believe.

Sparks and T. Rex are two other glam bands I wouldn't (didn't) hesitate in buying albums of.

Suzi Quatro, the little girl with the big throat... She should have been mentioned before Embarrassed. And Gary Glitter too Sick.

The Runaways, Joan Jett was one of them, are part of another story, these gals came later, '77-78, they were of about my age.

So hard so hard so hard to choose...
I have to go for "The Slider", though.
Marc Bolan, for me, impersonated "Glam Rock",
Bowie may have produced music of more merit
as well as Roxy Music's first three albums may have "aged" the best...
I grew up on T.Rex, Marc was a main influence for me to pick up guitar
and write songs myself, and so it has to be him for me, still.
When I was a young boy, I slightly preferred "Electric Warrior",
but "The Slider" is more fun...
thanks for this topic !

The earlier "Sparks" album has some very strange compositions - and a nice guitar solo in "No More Mr Nice Guys".

Yes, indeed. Still a massive Bowie fan, though.
Not very familiar with T.Rex. Something that should be remedied?

T. Rex seem to have settled into a glam rock groove. I was quite suprised when working backwards to discover the first "T. Rex" album and the preceding "A Beard Of Stars" and "Unicorn" albums as "Tyrannosaurus Rex".

I was into The Sweet, Slade & Mud, as so many other kids I suppose. Chinn & Chapman!
And then, like many others, I got attracted to Queen.

Nowadays, my favorite artists of glam would be Roxy Music, on the strength of their first two albums.

I think that "Electric Warrior", "The Slider" and "Tanx" are well worth listening in,
but be sure that Marc Bolan was the least progressive of the three.
It's far more old time rock'n'roll & boogie-infected... the music is more simple but very charming.
HE was the "Glam" of it.
I agree with you concerning Roxy, though...
in many ways they were better, far more adventurous.
But it was T.Rex that I grew up with... my elder brother bringing home all their albums and singles in the early 70s.

I had some connection to it in reality which was stunning for me. I had a guitartist friend who played like Alan Holdsworth and was a guitarist for the New York Dolls. I toured along with the Dead End Kids and Ian Hunter. I followed Glam Rock long before I ever hit the road. I liked the Slider by T.REX, Country Life -Roxy Music, early Bowie. The first 2 Ian HUnter releases and "White Punks On Dope" felt like a closing to it all.

There is another side to teen glam band Sweet that would probably surprise many on PA i.e. they were a very highly accomplished hard rock band when they played the music they wanted to make
