Year Zero and especially Empires Never Last... great stuff.

So, why no love for neo prog... especially this particular band.

Thanks.

Not quite true, I think. I like Galahad, but my favourite album by them is Sleepers - the title track is simply wonderful

Thank my friend. Looking it up right now!

What other neo prog is awesome? Arena I adore. Most of their stuff anyways. Dark Matter and Sub... of IQ are amazing. Most of Pallas is wonderful. Galahad.
What else am I missing?

Neo-Prog is probably the most hated genre on Progarchives, just because everyone just calls it "derivative" and "unoriginal". Sometimes I see it and it's sort of disgusting. People seem to bass it not on the actual compositions, but the "style". It happens with prog metal as well.

Anyways, haven't heard tons of Galahad, in fact, haven't heard tons of neo-prog. Loved IQs latest though, Dead Heroes' Club is good. Also, Mystery - Beneath the Veil of Winter's Face.

Neo-prog is an awesome genre. Knight Area is pretty decent, so was Carptree's first album.

But yes nobody touches Arena, IQ, Pallas and old Marillion.

I listen to the classics and things that expand on the classics. Not the things that redo them. Galahad redoes alot.

It is interesting how the heavyest neo-prog bands plays so on the border to prog metal, like Arena, newer Pallas and some of Galahads guitar sound is quite in the border betweem heavy prog rock and progressive metal.

Like a link (missing or not) i think that is facinating.

I have my theorie that for exmple Saga is very symphonic but the guitar is very soaring, heavy and fast,    I can't stop thinking that both Queensryche and Dream Theater is partly influenced by Saga.

Arena is also very heavy and symphonic + they are on the frinch prog metal. some of the Dreams of Men by Pallas is closely related to prog metal....

Galahad is great. My favortie are Sleepers and Empire... The singers made a audition to replace Fish, but i think is personnality wasn't what Marillion was looking for. As for Magenta, very good also. (The first double cd and the latest.) Another Neo prog band that  deserves  more attention is Sylvan. Melodic, emotional with great vocals!

Completely agree. Great post.

Even some of the IQ stuff (Sub... and Dark Matter)... some parts are definitely on the side of prog metal.

Can you recommend some others in such vein?

But if something is redone well, will you still oppose it for it is not original?

Yes it's the modern influence on a lot of Neo-Prog bands. Magenta for the fist time on their last cd have use the metal influence in some passages. Even Pendragon,  wich is consider a light neo-prog band have used  in the Pure cd some metal influence. That is a natural evolution of the Neo-Prog band since Marillion with heavy guitars and a bigger sound in the drums. That was a change compare to the more acoustic side of Genesis.

Blimey!  I saw this band once at the Walthamstow Standard, early 90s, very out of sync with the times. Nice to see they have a fan base.
