Subject: The Actual Favourite Prog Song (Super Poll!)

Sigh.... yet another "best prog song" polll.......... but WAIT! This one is different.

I want you all to vote for your favourite prog song, personally. That is, the song you like the most deep down, not the one you think is 'best overall', or historically, artistically, musically significant....... just your personal song that gives you the most pleasure. This isn't a "voting" poll because there are limitless options, but you simply type the name of the song you vote for.

1) You must type the song, then a gap, then give a brief (no more than one paragraph) explanation as to why it is your favourite....... this is just to show that you aren't voting for a song because "it will probably win anyway"... or "it will sotp something else from winning" ..... or for other distorted reasons.

2) You can vote for any song, whether it's by Yes or Pink Floyd or The Beatles or Led Zeppelin....... the explanation will make the vote count or not (obviously, for a song that isn't typically considered prog, your explanation will have to justify it as a prog song for the vote to count).

3) No votes will be counted after "a date"...... which I will decide at some point but it will be some time away yet!

I'll submit my vote below as an example of the ideal layout.

Close to the Edge

Because it has simultaneously warmed me and sent shivers down my spine for my entire life of prog-listening. This song is unsurpassed in beauty and in significance to my life, not to mention a musical influence on me.

Gentle Giant - Cogs in Cogs
I love everything about this song. The way the instruments work together, Derek's aggressive vocals, the complexity, the lyrics, everything. In my opinion the best song by my favourite band

The Lamia

This song has the most amazing blend of beautiful, emotional music, and vocal presentation I've ever heard. Gabriel's enunciation of each syllable is like a musical ride in and of itself--sung like no other song I've ever heard: delicately, sensuously, emotionally, clearly, perfectly--as if each and every letter sound and syllable has an extremely important contribution to the whole of his story, of his message--a message of Rael's (our) pain and pleasure, innocence and fear, curiosity and rapture. The lyrics are pure poetry, they are in and of themselves music, they are words telling a fantastical story, they are metaphorically significant to any evolving human being, they are sensuous in an almost uncomfortable and embarrassing way and yet detail the dual nature of those first sexual feelings, fantasies, and experiences so aptly. And then there is the magick of Tony's piano, Phil's percussives, all culminated with my favorite Steve Hackett solo of all-time. My favorite song the first time I heard it; the most astoundingly emotional listening experience I've had in music--one which has never failed to move me to my core upon every single one of the thousands of listens to which I've subjected myself.

Awesome "poll"!

Because Mikael Akerfeldt has combined death metal with prog rock, I like the lyrics and this song there's in my favorite album Still life.

CTTE
For me a prog song has to have magic---and be musically, other worldly--and this song has it all--it's moving and never sounds dated.

(Having said that, there are many songs that fit that description and I have to agree with BrufordFreak about the Lamia)

Mine is An Excerpt From 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, or, The Revisitation of the Blue Ghost. And yes I copied it from the official website Smile
For me it is the greatest song ever made from the greatest album ever. It has a pure and unique complexity without lack of feelings.

Supper's ready

That song is simply amazing and every time I listen to it I get the same feeling as the first time. It is a true love story and always keep me remembering that Genesis is my favourite band, even if I don't listen to them a lot these times.

I have to go with CTTE also.  To me, this song truly defines prog.  The subtle beginning/end the build to the first round of lyrics, the musicianship throughout and the fact that it still leaves me in awe to this day all bring this song/masterpiece together.

OK I'll pop in for Supper's Ready.  Primarily for length and having a bunch of different stuff crammed into it.

The Gates of Delirum

It's got beauty, terror, meaningful lyrics and a meaningful message.  The piece builds up slowly and inexorably, reaching a plateau in the 'war' instrumental, but then reaching its crescendo in one of most bichin' Howe leads - dynamic and melodic.  From there all quiets down and eventually fades out to a peace that is ever abiding.  The overall structure is exquisite and the performances are all top-notch.  It is everything Prog was meant to be as far as I am concerned.

For me it's CTTE or Awaken. Since CTTE has been chosen already a few times, here's my ode to Awaken:
This song touches me deeply within, musically and spiritually. Musically it's perfect, with great melodies, sublime piano and church organ and percussion. Spiritually the lyrics and vocals hit me every time to the bone...

Funny thing, Omar, while I was writing my post upholding The Lamia as my favorite song, motW's "Excerpts from 6,000,000,000..." was one of the three other songs that tried to chip away at my confidence in my chosen one. (The other two: "Can You Hear Me?" by Renaissance and and "Streetwalker" by Jan Akkerman.)

A bit of agonising; several songs fit my bill, especially 21st Century Schizoid man and Watercolour Days. If it comes down to one, it has to be Watercolour Days by Clouds, for that intro alone could enthrall me. The way the music builds in a crescendo to that opening verse is just sublime, and the arrangement continues in such a clever way, dropping down to just piano right in the middle, playing an almost-nursery rhyme melody, before returning with that haunting chorus. I think the chorus is a bit weaker lyrically than the verse, which is a shame, but it's still a lovely piece of work.

Very, very hard to choose. I've been listening to prog for almost 40 years.

Have to go with Thick as a Brick.

First time I heard it I was blown away-the melodies, the changes, the length, the whole story. It has so much in it. I still listen to it and enjoy it. Whether the original full length version or the various edits from the live shows. It's all good.

The first song I was thinking after reading poll question was King Crimson - Starless. I find Starless simply amazing. I love everything about it: melody, technicality, the slow start-up and the perfect dissonant transition to the crazy, chaotic and unbelievable end(for sure one of the best piece of prog ever written). I'll stop mentioning another ones because there many, many others and you asked for just one.

Exactly..... please everyone, it's so much easier to count votes if this format is adhered to.

And the couple of you that didn't give explanations need to or you won't get counted.

I think we should probably be stating the artist's names too; with some more obscure songs I'm not necessarily gonna know who the band is.

Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive

Syd Barrett at his peak with the guitar. Wordless, no beginning, middle or end. Just one long continuous jam. Unlikely ever to hear it played on the radio; unlikely to appear as a favourite mp3 file on someone's ipod. The version on PATGOD is different to countless versions of the song on bootleg recordings. People lucky enough to hear the song performed live at the Marquee round 1966 would be privileged to witness an altogether different version each time. PATGOD succeeds as an album with or without Interstellar Overdrive so the song stands alone without the other songs on PATGOD to support it. When Pink Floyd created Interstellar Overdrive the creative urge in progressive jazz somewhat died and Prog Rock took it's place.

All of the Above - Transatlantic

This song is the most all-encompassing, universal, transcendent piece of music I've ever heard. The first time I heard it it was like nothing else before. I remember having similar feelings with Close to the Edge before, but this was even more profuse.

I can't decide between Van Der Graaf Generator's La Rossa or Childlike Faith in Childhood's End (guess my favourite album Tongue)

The explanation is the same for both songs: powerful music, chilling vocals, captivating lyrics and most importantly huge amounts of emotion. I've been wondering and fearing when I get bored of these songs, but it just doesn't seem to happen. I've been listening to both songs constantly for years and I still, as cliche as it is, often get shivers down my spine.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Built from only four notes a beautiful melody emerges and develops. A haunting intro, stellar guitar playing that carries that melody all through, good poetic lyrics (Waters best imo), great arrangements.

My favorite piece of music from the first note to the last. The best parts are 6 and 7, love that whooping lap steel guitar solo.

Shine on You Crazy Diamon - Pink Floyd.

All 24 minutes played together, as a matter of fact. I just find it to be a truely beautiful piece of music, great intro, great instrumental passages, and vocals. It must be one of the most relaxing pieces of music I've heard, whenever I'm particularly stressed, this is the song I need to calm down (once again, complete, all 24 min).

As a matter of fact, it's particularly difficult to choose only one song, there are several others (and not few) that could easily have made my choice, and surely many others that won't immediatley come to mind that would also be worthy choices. From Pink Floyd I could also have chosen Dogs, or Echoes, or High Hopes. From Yes I chould have chosen Awaken (or Gates of Delirium). From Genesis I could have chosen Firth of Fifth (or Supper's Ready). From King Crimson I could have chosen Epitaph (or Starless, live version - From Collectible King Crimson Vol. 1, CD 1, Live in Mainz). From Jethro Tull it could have been Thick as a Brick (as it appears on Live, bursting out, which I feel is more coherent than the original studio version). From Harmonium it chould have been Histoires Sans Paroles. From Led Zeppelin it could have been Stairway to Heaven. And then some less obviuous choices but also excellent... well that would be too much for this post.

I love how seamless and natural the transitions are from each section of the song.  The end section, As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs (Aching Man's Feet), gives me goosebumps and a feeling of elation; particularly the live version.  This is one of the only songs that I get this feeling from. I also enjoy the clever lyrics that make you think.
