As we find bootlegs added to the database on a regular basis, I thought it would be good to have one dedicated thread to report them. Here's some Zeppelin bootlegs for starters:

Indeed, if we start adding Led Zep bootlegs, we'll need a bigger web site.

I have bought the occasional bootleg many years ago. I can't think of any that were really worth having. Terminate them from this site with extreme prejudice!!!!

There are plenty of similar items on PA. Some of them are offered in respected music stores, it's not easy to prove that CD X and DVD Y are bootlegs.

Very true. That is why I started with Led Zeppelin, which are an easy case as their official discography is limited and very well known.

I've had a look at all three of those. I think they are all legitimately available in high street shops (in the case of the one added by mandi, probably an Italian Walmart). I don't think Rushfan4 and Snobb would have added albums which were not legitimately available.
I think the issue with these more to do with the licencing, they will have been released under some sort of licence not required arrangement. As has been said, there are a lot of that type of release scattered across the site, including the entire "Inside (band name) DVD series, which claims to "require complete artistic independence".
Bottom line is that while these releases are dubious, and do not from part of the official discography, I don' t think they are bootlegs in the traditional sense.
It's a topic worthy of discussion of course, but I personally think in these cases, there is enough legitimacy to their distribution to allow them to stay.

Yes, sublicensing is different than bootleging. Quite a complicated issue indeed. [Long story told short, sublicensing releases are legal, but I don't think we should add them unless they contribute with new material - which is highly unlikely.]
As for the three entries that I reported, that of Snobb also appears on Discogs as an http://www.discogs.com/Led-Zeppelin-You-Shock-Me-Live-Performances/release/2571413" rel="nofollow - unofficial release and on RYM as a http://rateyourmusic.com/release/unauth/led_zeppelin/you_shock_me/" rel="nofollow - bootleg , so I guess this can be considered settled. Regarding Scott's entry I think it's impossible for this to be a sub-licensing because the Australian tour wasn't previously released and you as far as I know you can't "sub-license" previously unreleased material. This "label" that released this DVD sells through Amazon Marketplace and seems to have many other releases for sale too. So I can't say I'm 100% sure, but they don't show up on any other database either (like Discogs or RYM). Which means Mandy's entry is the one with the highest chances of being a genuine sublicensed edition, actually. Which I don't think we should keep, either; even if it's genuine, it breaches PA policy as it only duplicates previously added material.

Hmmm....I can't remember adding that particular Led Zeppelin DVD. I suspect that it must have come up while I was on Amazon and since it wasn't listed here, I added it. Not exactly sure why, unless I was adding another DVD or CD that I did have and while I was at it decided to add this one too. From time to time I will scan new releases on AllMusic Guide and if they apply to PA or MMA bands I will add them to the database. I don't see this one listed on AllMusicGuide though, so I have to assume that it must have come up while I was on Amazon.

No, although this is another Yes release of dubious value, I have seen this in the shops (albeit with a different cover).

I've seen it too. What's odd is it's not really extended versions at all; if memory serves, it's actually from the SLO shows that became Keys to Ascension.

I do have that Yes Extended Versions CD. There are a number of bands that are included in the series. There is a Kansas Extended Versions which is basically the same as their King Biscuit Flower Hour performance.

I think we are not a bunch of lawyers here and it's not our task to do detectives' job. If albums are distributed by respected stores and services I see no reason to delete or not include them on PA.
Personally if I have doubts about some album's legitimacy I don't add it to PA. But we can't say, once and forever, to all PA members what they should not add to the database.

No one asks the E&O team to do a detective job, I think that judging upon presented evidence is reasonable enough.
NotAProghead wrote:

Respected stores sell mostly anything though. Remember when a few weeks back a guy asked us here to add a Genesis bootleg he had bought at Wallmart? Right now I'm looking at the page of the Zeppelin DVD Scott added, and the EBay field in the page is offering to sell me "
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&toolid=10005&campid=5335893920&customid=RSS+Widget+Led+Zeppelin&icep_item=400207496791&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=238401&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=rss" rel="nofollow - Led Zeppelin - Collectors Box Unauthorized 2DVDs $17.95 " or " http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&toolid=10005&campid=5335893920&customid=RSS+Widget+Led+Zeppelin&icep_item=110680343857&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=238401&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=rss" rel="nofollow - Led Zeppelin - Closer to Heaven (DVD, 2007) ". And Idon't know what are Amazon's standards, but Amazon Marketplace (the only place where that DVD can be bought) isn't Amazon, it's a place where anyone can sell (a sort of EBay held by Amazon).

"No bootlegs or unauthorized releases" is already asked on the album addition page, so if anyone would have your attitude this wouldn't be a problem, but obviously it isn't the case.
RE Yes, they have already plagued their own discography with cheap compilations and editions, they look dubious indeed but they are OK.

We can discuss it to death, but put yourselves on admin's place. Would you immediately delete an album if you have somebody's report that it's a bootleg? I think no, you have to search through the web, spend a lot of time and I'm not sure you'll find the right answer.
Some bands have lists of bootlegs on their websites. It seems only in this case admin can delete the album with a light heart.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but two of the live Black Sabbath albums are as far as I can ascertain, bootlets. Haven't got either and they appear to be decent bootlegs, but not legit all the same.
Information taken from a BS bootlet site - http://www.black-sabbath.de/bootleg2.sab" rel="nofollow - http://www.black-sabbath.de/bootleg2.sab
ROCKSTARS IN CONCERT -------------------- (Stemra 6117062) Source: Olympia, Paris, France, 20/12/1970 CD: Iron Man/Paranoid/War Pigs/Fairies Wear Boots/Hand Of Doom/Black Sabbath/ Behind The Wall Of Sleep (42:52 min) Comments: Another version from the French T.V. broadcast in good sound. Same concert as "COPPER", "Paris 20/12/70" etc. Made in Holland. This bootleg is also available as tape "Black Sabbath - Rockstars In Concert" (MC 6117064).
IN CONCERT live in worcester ---------------------------- (Rock Head records RHRCD-9906-8, KBFH presents 8015.2) Source: The Centrum, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, 4/11/1983 CD: Children Of The Grave/Hot Line/War Pigs/Iron Man/Zero The Hero/Heaven And Hell/Solo Tony Iommi/Digital Bitch/Black Sabbath/Smoke On The Water/ Paranoid (72:08 min) Comments: Another clone of "Born In Hell". Excellent soundquality as usual and deluxe booklet. Said to be made in Canada, sold only in Russia and Ukraine, 1999. The CD claims itself to be a King Biscuit Flower Hour release which of course it is not.

Apologies that no-one acted on this before now. I've searched on the band's official website and elsewhere and it's clearly not a release endorsed or contracted by the band so yes, deleted accordingly as an unauthorised bootleg.

The Rockstars In Concert entry is a dead cert bootleg and has been deleted. I'm almost certain the Live in Worcester is also a bootleg and is not affiliated in any way with the familiar King Biscuit series of live albums but will have do do a bit more digging around to make sure (Shame really, as it's one of the few live recordings we have with Gillan in the band) Thanks for the prompt on these two

Nononoononoonono. I was referring to what you said earlier.

There are lots of "Inside" series releases by Classic Rock Productions. It says no adding of bootlegs or albums unauthorized by the band. This is in regards to the two Muse demos. Not bootlegs. But not authorized for release.

^ As far as I can tell, authorized by the band (or unauthorized by the band) is a tricky thing. We all know, in good old times bands were signed to labels, changed labels and so on. Labels, in their turn, could go bankrupt, become a part of a bigger label etc. In many cases artists quite often lost control over their back catalogue. But the remains of these unfortunate labels still had some rights, were able to give licences to other labels etc. And it's not against the law (no matter how good or bad it is).
Thus, as I understand it, "unauthorized by the band" is not necessarily equal to "bootleg".

^ all the tracks are sourced from 5 separate BBC Radio Top Gear sessions which were previously broadcast (as far as I am aware) However, all things being 'pure at the source', to be a legitimate release it would have to be either released by the BBC themselves or licensed to another vendor. I can't find any evidence of this anywhere so I guess it should be nuked. (I ain't an admin so I can't do this)

It seems The Doors "Seattle 1970" http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=51476" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=51476 is a bootleg. Actually it's a bootleg well known by the fans long before 2015 BRR edition.
Normally Bright Midnight label releases the band's archive recordings and they are remastered by Bruce Botnick and announced on the Doors website. Nothing like this in case of Seattle performance. Discogs also says it's unofficial: http://https://www.discogs.com/The-Doors-Backdoor-Man-Seattle-1970/release/7924138" rel="nofollow - http://https://www.discogs.com/The-Doors-Backdoor-Man-Seattle-1970/release/7924138

Roine Stolt has confirmed on the FK Yahoo group that the Agents of Mercy live album listed on progarchives, "Magic Kingdom", is in fact a bootleg and should be removed. http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=49220
Also, the person who made the recording has a free version on archive.org, with Roine's permission and he also verified that the recording was his and that it is not an official recording and should not be for sale.
1c. Re: Agents of Mercy - Magic Kingdom Posted by: "Roine Stolt" mailto:[email protected]" rel="nofollow - [email protected] roine.stolt Date: Thu Jan 12, 2017 2:19 pm ((PST))
not legit -
there is only ONE legit live recording from Agents of Mercy - and that’s the Power of Two CD.
if it says “Magic Kingdom ……..” it is most likely from "Magic Room" in Boston, and with Nick DV on drums.

There are many officially released CD's recordings on Discogs listed as unofficial. These unofficial CD's usually cost less then the official releases.
Are these Discogs unofficial releases ripped and burned from official releases? Are there other explanations?
I ask because I'm tempted to purchase an official unofficial RPI release.

^ Wrong thread, this one is for reporting bootlegs in PA database.
Anyway to your question - it's necessary to check each particular case. Some are burned from official releases, some have simpler artwork, some were released as bootlegs first and then officially.
