I read about these guys in my newspaper this morning. They go around London and attack people and sometimes try to kill them. This one guy was lit on fire, others are brutally attacked and this 5-year old almost got a noose around his neck. These "Hoodies" cite MTV's Jackass as "inspiration," I guess.

Geez, leave it to Americans....

I think that's sick.

A Hoody (see above) is the name given to a hooded top. Whilst this form of clothing may be harmless on its own (the picture is actually slightly unnerving, due to the lack of a face from within the dark chasm...), it can be used for more sinister purposes.

Hoodies are worn by many people (including quite amusing the Prime Ministers wife). However, there is a certain social grouping within the UK known as "Trevs", who consist primarily of working class youths. These youths gather in large groups, and many people feel intimidated by the scene of a mass of people, often with their faces obscured by these garments.

Trevs generally gather with the intention of having a good time. There is no harm in that, but due to their apparent lack of sensibility, tend to consume large amounts of alcohol when attempting to live up to what is expected of them by their peers. The alcohol causes many of their number to become violent (as happens to a lot of people who drink). This is when these violent attacks tend to occur.

There is also a barbaric and sickening "craze" which is known as "Happy Slapping", where an individual is approached by a gang of youths and abused in various ways (e.g., the most extreme of cases was the setting on fire of a sleeping drunk, which, whilst amusing, is clearly quite wrong). The attack is filmed by one member of the gang on his/her Camera Phone, and is then circulated amongst classmates.

The U.S show "Jackass" is reported to be the catalst of such incidents, but one can't help feel that these people lack a fundamental sense of morality.

Unless you wrote the article I quoted then no!  Or is it that you agree with setting someone on fire is amusing?

I enjoy setting people on fire, it brings warmth to the mutual gathering

Just listen to the screams ever changing rhythm and volume, and how it smothers in the end, gives a proggie feeling to the experience

it's not the flames you need to worrie about, it's the one carrying the torch

I don't think we ought to set K9 on fire, Snow Dog wouldn't like you smoking out his relatives....

why do tv or films always get the blame for this sort of sh*t?  I don't recall, in jackass, anyone setting fire to an unsuspecting member of the public.  it is all media bullsh*t.

Another hoodie type news item recently concerned Bluewater, Europe's largest indoor shopping centre, banning people with hoodies or baseball caps.  none other than the esteemed deputy prime minister, the (dis)honourable John Prescott, supported the shopping centre managers saying that he thought people wearing hoodies were a menace.

...what a c***.

Happy Slapping is nothing new, back in the 50's it was practiced during lunch hours.

True. Is that an ancient Chinese proverb?

No, I believe it's a quote from a Terry Pratchett book, but I forget which one.

And the sad thing is kids (Under 18's) get away with all this.

I'm not sure what things are like in America, but the youth problem in England is getting extremely bad... with people already being killed and ending up in comas... yet the sad thing is kids can't be punished because they have "rights". The worst that happens to them is that they get an ASBO.

A story I once told someone to demonstrate how bad the situation is becoming...

"So one day, I'm casually walking down the street, minding my own business, keeping to myself... when from the distance I see a small boy... no more than 12 or 13. As we get nearer and nearer, he suddenly reaches into his coat, and pulls out a gun.

BANG!

The kid shot me in the shoulder! Do I know this kid? No! Have I done anything to provoke him? No! He pulled out a gun and shot me in the shoulder for no reason...

Instints kick in, and I lash out... when one blow to the face I've knocked this kid out..."

You can all figure how bad the justice system is here... guess what happens next? That's right... I go to court. I get sentanced for assault. I end up on the front page of the Sun with quotes like "Do you trust this man on the streets?"... Never mind the fact a 13 year old has a live gun... I (an 18 year old) touched a 13 year old... and I'm going to hell.

f**king kids.
