The setlest for last night's 2010 tour kickoff concert, at Leamington Spa's The Assembly, leaned heavily on trio material from Trisector and the new album (with a tune from Present thrown in)...only three tunes from the 70's! They are indeed a modern band... Interference Patterns Nutter Alert Your Time Starts Now Mr Sands All That Before Lifetime Bunsho Childlike Faith...... Thanks for the list, I'm looking forward to the London show on Sunday, would've preferred a bit more of the older stuff, but at least it's the good newer stuff they have on the list -------------  |

I'll be seeing them for the first time on Sunday - really looking forward to it. I'm glad that they're leaning more towards their contemporary material - like King Crimson, they're not that big on wallowing in nostalgia and they're a better band for it. ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' Incredibly solid set. There's a few songs I'd certainly love to hear that aren't there. Every Bloody Emperor being one that I really miss. And Lemmings. Did they ever play House With No Door live? I know P. Hawk played it at least once, but that seemed like something of a rare occurance. I'd love to hear an interpretation of it by the trio -------------

Well, since the kickoff gig, they've really varied it up. In Glasgow the oldies played were Childlike Faith, Lemmings, and Meurglys III. In Manchester they did Scorched Earth, Still Life, Man Erg and La Rossa.
So you just never know what you're going to get... ------------- jc |

Possibly in the early days, early 70's. I've talked to Hugh B. about this. He first started playing bass guitar on stage in '72, just a short while before the band broke up. We were trying to think of tunes he would have used it on stage for (Hammill would have been playing electric piano). We came up with A Louse is Not a Home (which, though it appeared a few years later on a PH solo album, was worked out and performed by VdGG on stage in '72) and House With No Door (Hugh thinks they might have done that once he got the bass; I know they never played it from the reformation in '75 onward).
But you will not be hearing that on this (or probably any future!) VdGG tour. Hammill did do it solo, but not with VdGG after the early 70's. ------------- jc |

This is pretty mind blowing. So Louse Is Not a Home was originally a VDGG song then? I had no idea, but listening to the song it makes so much sense. It always "felt" like a Van Der Graaf song to me. Are there any known live recordings of this era I could possibly hear? Damn I so wish I could buy your book.
