Sorry Paradox. You're asking the wrong person here about pay-as-you-drive. I'm a public transport user myself. But I understand it's not yet operational. We do have a lane priority for multi-occupancy cars though. Don't if sucessful. Wrong part of town for me.

Leeds is famous for lots of things. Tetley's Breweries, Leeds United (Ahem!), the only city outside London to have a Harvey Nicks and also the site of the first ever motion picture footage. Crown Point Bridge over the River Aire to be precise. In fact a very progressive city. Perhaps Neo prog. Not metal - more like stone, glass and brick

Your car would have a "black box " fitted which would record your mileage and which kind of road you drove on...and you would be charged accordingly..

Currently we pay between £110 and £155 per year "road tax" plus an extraordinarily punitive tax on fuel. Fuel prices are so high that we pay by the litre in Britain! Average price, near me,is 80p per litre...

Pay-As-You-Drive is a plan being considered by the Government where you pay around £1 (about $1.80) for every mile that you drive. This will allow Fuel Tax and Vehicle Tax to be lowered. At the moment, around 40% of the cost of petrol in the UK is tax.
This is also supposed to lower congestion.

I am more happy with the status quo (yes, they're a good band ) than this proposed system, for the following reason:

To calculate the travel costs, each car would be fitted with a modified GPS system, which would send information to government departments which would figure out how far you have driven and how much you should pay.
Call me a cynic, but this is a very frightening and maddening plan. The government would always know where you are. Whenever you drive anywhere, the GPS system in the boot (or wherever) would be sending that information to a government department.

This is in violation of civil liberties, and if this plan goes ahead, i think i might just buy a motorbike.

Incredible! Is this a test or are there actually plans to roll this out on a national basis. Is the road tax in addition to pay tolls?

I pay $2.29 a gallon which is about 1.25 pounds. How do you pay a punitive tax on fuel? Do you mean it's already in the price.

Yes! 83p = $1.40 (?) for a LITRE!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the moment the Government plans to introduce the system in a few cities, to see how it works out. Leeds is the chosen city, hence the original comment. Road Tax would still be around (i think), but it would be substantially reduced.

Fuel tax is already included with the price, thats why it is so expensive to buy at the pumps.

OK so you pay 1 pound per mile and pay the road tax (even if lowered) and still pay this enormous amount on Fuel? Thats crazy! In the states our road taxes are part of the gasoline taxes and property taxes but My God you Brits are getting Raped!

Fuel tax would be lowered as well, although i'm not sure by how much. This won't be introduced into every area of the UK for at least another 5 years. Yes, we're taxed an awful lot

George Harrisons song "Taxman" works well in this situation.

Both Peter Hammill and Peter Gabriel have their studios in Bath.
By the way, I live in Cologne, Germany. Was born in Dortmund, another German city.
[/QUOTE]

Peter Gabriel's Ashcombe Studios is about a 3 minute or under drive from my house. It was the studio used to record Birdy and So, not sure about his other albums from earlier/later periods.

Salisbury Hill is also a few minutes drive from where i live

I'm from Lac-st-Jean in Québec, not canada. Lac-st-Jean is a 99% french region (the other 1% being the different indians languages) five hours away from Montréal. I'm a Québecois, proud of it.

I didn't see anyone say they "hated their country." They may not like the city or town they live in, but that's a whole 'nother thing than "hating their country" for chrissakes!

Sorry, I meant city...

Poland is on Saturn, because the women here are unearthly...

Actually so are the politicians and I hope they're sent back where they belong immediately!!!! Polish astronomers have discovered enough planets OUTSIDE THE SOLAR SYSTEM for them to ruin...

Although a black hole would do even better...

I live in the area...well southwest of Allentown, between Reading and

Hey Baldwin,

I love NY too.  Could never imagine myself going back to Cincinnati to live after living here.  I think I'll be staying awhile, especially since I have no interest in taking the bar exam again.

Cheers! Chester

Tasmania, Australia.

If you look it up on a map, some say it looks like the shape of the pubic hair on a woman.

The west coast of Tasmania reputedly has the cleanest air and rainfall in the world. The predominant westerly trade winds blow straight off the Southern Ocean without crossing any other landmass.
