Happy
Anniversary! Shiny New Website and Shiny New
Gigs!
This
month is The Red Masque's 10 year anniversary. Although it's been a long strange
trip, we have had a lot of fun along the way. We have revamped the band website*
at http://www.theredmasque.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.theredmasque.com , as the old one was getting a bit
long in the tooth and out-of-shape. We hope you enjoy our new website and find
it easier to use and navigate. If you notice any technical issues, please email
me at mailto:[email protected]" rel="nofollow - [email protected] .
*Gallery pages are still under construction, but will be
up in the next week or so.
I am
also very pleased to announce an unique show coming up THIS WEDNESDAY Feb. 16 at the North Star
Bar in Philadelphia.

This isn't the first time uber-alternative producer
Martin Bisi has played Philly, but it's certainly the most fascinating. For the
uninitiated listener, Bisi is a Bizarro-World (fictional planet in the comics)
Daniel Lanois. Like that producer, Bisi has worked with Brian Eno on eerily
atmospheric ambient stuff. But rather than go Lanois' mainstream route, Bisi has
opted for avant-everything by knob-twiddling for Material, Herbie Hancock, Sonic
Youth, Swans, and John Zorn. Somehow, Bisi's solo recordings have managed to
sound like a guy at the apex of all that oddity: brutal and beautiful they are,
his new EP Son of a Gun, in particular. On this night, cabaret-punk drummer
Brian Viglione of Dresden Dolls plays with Bisi. That should be stark. Equally
stark is the blast of Philly's the Red Masque. The neo-goth/progressive band
fronted by siren/painter Lynnette Shelley and multi-instrumentalist Brandon Lord
Ross were always fascinating. Together since 2001, they sounded like Siouxsie
meets Gong. But a new guitarist and frantic newer tunes have given their wifty
complexities a blunt force by honing their femme-fronted sound to a King Crimson
Thrak-era brand of bold attack. Kappow. They've got art shows. They're working
on a local film (The Hermits Glass Box, see it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6qbSJNR1wE%29" rel="nofollow - www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6qbSJNR1wE) . Get to this show
early. - A.D. Amorosi

Martin
Bisi, a New York performer and well-known record producer has been at a
crossroads of indie/punk, avant garde, noire/cabaret rock, and electronic music
since the early 80's, recording classic albums by Sonic Youth, Swans, John Zorn,
Bill Laswell/Material, Helmet, Herbie Hancock (Rockit), Africa Bambaata, The
Boredoms, The Dresden Dolls, White Zombie, Cop Shoot Cop, Foetus, Unsane and
others. In his own band, Martin Bisi [band] where he plays guitar and sings, the
songs incorporate story-telling and range between dark and down-tempo, and fast
and light-hearted. Bisi also does unique ambient sound layering that reminds of
his studio work. Martin Bisi's band at this show will include Brian
Viglione of The Dresden Dolls on drums.

The
Red Masque are a Philadelphia avant / progressive rock quartet
who have been putting out incendiary live performances in the region for the
past ten years. Part art, part alchemy, the group's experimental songwriting
style is both angular and eerie, accented by freeform space rock improvisations,
intricate acoustics, dark atmospherics and chunky riffs. Unconventional and
eccentric in musical form, the sophisticatedly sinister The Red Masque fuses
together such disparate musical references as horror movie soundtracks,
rock-in-opposition, progressive rock, experimental, zeuhl, heavy rock, gothic,
psychedelia, space rock, and kraut rock. The Red Masque are on the RER USA label
out of Colorado.
