I have a lot of old prog/non-prog records yet no record player... Is there a decent player I can find nowadays that isn't very expensive? -------------

I'd suggest just looking around for a used one in good condition. Either online or not I suppose. Hopefully somebody can be more specific but I got both of moth at random garage/estate sales as far as I can recall. I got an inexpensive one a few years ago before vinyl started to make a comeback. Really don't like it as you have to manually drop the needle on the record. My last couple were Duals and with each of those you could move the needle into place and they had a lever to lower it. Of course the old amp I was using died years ago and I basically have no set up to use it until I get a pre-amp. Then my house flooded and ruined a bunch of my records, most of which were already replaced by CDs but there were a few I should have taken out and put on the top shelf. I do have really precious survivors but I stand on record (pun intended) as not being a particular fan of the vinyl format when it comes to the disc itself. I had been making copies and burning to CD. Blasphemy to some I'm sure. I did find that frequently when I went to the trouble to scan in the cover art and make my own CD booklet that the album would become available in the CD format.  ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I just bought one new and it didn't come cheap (just under 100 pounds) but it is very good, and was also the only one available so a new one is both hard to come by and not cheap at least not in England -------------

| I paid 250€ for my Goldring 1.2 as I wanted something relatively sturdy and manual. I think you can get automatic ones for less than a hundred dollars though. |

| I would try and find a used turntable. Look for a quality brand name like Dual, Denon, Technics, Sony, etc. There is a lot of them for sale on the internet. I've been using my Dual for 30 years as I replace my cartridge every year with Shure. |

Find a turntable that works well with a damped cue lever so you can lower and raise the tonearm mechanically. this will protect the record as well as the needle. Spend money on the cartridge, thats where you will notice sound difference.

Also depending on your vinyl collection, I would stay away from eBay and the sort....you just never know how it will really work when you get it. I think for USD200.00 you can get a very good player and then later on upgrade the cartridge. -------------

I would say no. I believe this player is all in one and cannot or does not have the ability to connect to your home stereo, it plays thru its own 3" full range speakers that probably sound no better than a transister radio.
Again, just depends on your vinyl collection and how you want it to sound. I mean if you have no home hi-fi setup then maybe this is the way to go for you.

P3 woooooooooooweeerrrrrrrr that's going a bit far for first budget system don't ya think ? p1 or p2 does a good enough job matched up with right Amp and Speakers .

On a budget, forget Rega - I normally recommend the http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Ject-Debut-III-Turntable-Cartridge/dp/B000CCEQP6/ref=sr_1_201?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1297982693&sr=1-201" rel="nofollow - Pro-Ject Debut III , which is 5 times cheaper than the Rega and for the vast majority of people, just as good. But even that is 3 times more than budget being discussed here. There is a cheaper version called the Pro-Ject Essential, that sells for £150 over here, but I haven't found a USA retailer for it to know the dollar price. Looking on Fry's and Amazon.com websites (the only way I have of gauging price and availability in the USA), I wouldn't touch anything they sell that comes in at less than $250 - the Grace and the Crosley look pretty bad - the cheaper Duals look scary too - I wouldn't put any of my vinyl anywhere near any of them for fear of damage. Look to the mid-price Dual or the Sony, but by then you are in the Pro-Ject price bracket anyway.
