Apocalyptica is a Symphonic-like, Progressive metal band made up of three cellos, double bass, and drums (obviously). They started out playing Metallica covers on their first album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, but soon decided to write their own music. Starting with their second album, Inquisition Symphony, and onward. Apocalyptica is also known for having many session musicians on their latter albums, from Dave Lombardo of Slayer, to Ville Valo of HIM.

Eicca Toppinen - cello
Paavo Lojonen - cello
Perttu Kivilaakso - cello
Mikko Siren - drums / double bass

Symphonic metal =/= progressive metal.

We have symphonic metal bands because when the site begun those were one of the few metal bands allowed in.

This has been http://www.progarchives.com/forum/search_results_topics.asp?SearchID=20110207180955&KW=apocalyptica" rel="nofollow - suggested several times before , and they've already been rejected.

Look, I know its in your nature to inspect some bands that have or don't have the progressive blood in them, but c'mon guys! Don't you ever listen to some of their music? Sure, most of Apocalyptica's music are more modern, but that doesn't mean that they're not progressive. Before you start judging other bands, I would like for you two to at least listen to their music and tell me why shouldn't this band be on this website. I'm doing the best I can to find some progressive bands at my newbie stage.

It doesn't matter what we think. They were already rejected years ago, and you would need unanimous admin approval to override that. That's not going to happen, so unless they release a new extremely progressive album, they're not going anywhere.

Prisonburg, I agree with you that Apocalyptica is prog metal, and without a doubt one of the most innovative acts of the genre. But, this site is not a public institution, this is a private enterprise. So, the guys have their strong reasons why they rejected Apocalyptica. I have no idea why, but the music could not be the reason, that's for sure. LOL, maybe the reason is that the Apocalyptica is too popular prog matal band, e.g. this live video have almost 11.5 MIO views...

This amatheur video have more of 17.3 MIO views...LOL

I agree on everything you've said. This site is full of prejudices, opportunism, bias, self-contradiction and non-competense in music. They speak nonsense about what progressive and what not. The whole addition procedure is ludicrous, tons of non-prog bands allowed, tons of prog bands rejected. It is like communism: it started right but then people controlling it don't know how to handle their power and responsibility because they are simply biased by several personal, commercial, inadequate and other misty and impure and unelucidated reasons. They simply strain their powers. And we, who don't have powers like admins and sons, are like Don Quijote against windmills. But there is one thing we musn't forget about. And it is music. Not what they do in its name. No matter what they say, music is the only important thing here. And that is ours.

I have to edit my post above, because that "One" video have 11.5 MIO views, not "only" 1.5... Maybe Apocalyptica is rejected at times when and because they were Metallica tribute band? Nope, Eurosong 2007 ought to be reason! But, for me, the "lack"of popularity LOL  seems to be THE reason for flipping poor Apocalyptica away; look this, "only" 2.8 MIO views video:

Former Metallica tribute, a prog band from 00s,  to be so popular? Oh no, lets hang these guys from Finland on the tree! LOL

OK, it "works", but only if one knows the topic poster nickname, the time when it was posted, it is not enough to write only the name of the band or the artist, etc.; I dont know for Apocalyptica, but I tried with Loreena McKeenith without any success. lol, It is better to send to you a PM with a question: "Hey, is this great prog act suggested by someone else yet? If not, can I send to you, at very discrete way, few simples before posting in public because I respect HolIy Progginqusition?" LOL

^ that's not true. I just did a search without setting anything, just writing "Apocalyptica", and it showed one older suggestion thread: forum_posts.asp?TID=72281&KW=apocalyptica&title=apocalyptica-for-prog-metal-maybe-symphonic-prog" rel="nofollow - - Apocalyptica for Prog Metal (maybe) Symphonic Prog

Also, you're writing Loreena McKennitt's name wrong, which is why you can't find anything. It's McKennitt, not McKeenith Wacko

So I guess we have to listen to what the so-called "Gentle" Giants of they say? That we can't add any other suitable prog bands that considered "not prog enough", or "too popular"? What the f**k? I thought this website was where you can add a band that's PROG! But whatever. Doesn't matter anymore, because I'm pretty sure the top dogs won't ever listen to what a "Newbie" like me has to say.

Your newbie status got nothing ado with it. You're just unlucky to take bands that have all been rejected before.

Don't take it personal and don't play it personal. It's ugly.

Unhappy

As stated before, symphonic metal IS NOT prog metal. Of course, there are plenty of prog metal bands in here with a symphonic sound, but covering Metallica with cellos does not equal progress (-iveness).

And I have Worlds Collide (actually, my brother has it but that's irrelevant) which is supposed to be their "proggiest" album. I fail to see anything new in their music other than repeating the formula of their first 2 albums, which weren't even that innovative.

No problem, no need to apologize to me. I don't find that strange, I'm sure that if her music was PA-worthy, somebody would have suggested her, as she's very well known.

Doesnt metter "newbie" or "senior member". I sugested as newbie one band and they added that one. Now without kidding - this IS the private site, not a social institution. If I have, for example, a private site like this, no way for some act to pass if I DONT LIKE IT.

Not the website is the one that's crappy but you until you think that all the bands you have filed under progressive metal are progressive metal. Do you really think that Nightwish, Rhapsody, Kamelot, Therion, etc (the list is endless) are progressive metal? This is musical competense. Or just take exper/post metal category, it is two very very different genres to file under one, it is big mess like this. If people in deciding position think like that, we have nothing to talk about.

Nightwish and Rhapsody were both entered on the site in the very beginning when anyone could add a band to the database.  They were not approved by the metal genre team.  Because reviews were done on albums for these bands, it was decided to leave the bands on rather than delete them because it wouldn't be fair to people who had written reviews.  Unfortunately, leaving them on causes problems every time this discussion/argument comes up, because if they are here, then so and so should be here too.

Exactly. But my "problem" was abit different. I didn't search for Apocalyptica, I tried to find previous suggestion(s) for Loreena Mc Kennitt. Few days ago I suggested her for Prog Folk. Because of the reason that nobody before suggested her and  I'v been spelling her name wrongly,  I get no result. So, everything is OK with that search function. My mistake! Embarrassed

Just keep requesting band additions and eventually you will have agreeance with the admins. If its rejected, move on and suggest another. Its nothing personal but some bands simply are not what the site is all about. MetalArchives site might have this band anyway if you want to write reviews for Apocalyptica.

Instead of talking about how the rules say that if a band is rejected then it has to be approved only by unanimous vote of the admin team and blah blah blah let's focus on the real issue here and the ONLY reason why Apocalyptica is not in PA: they ARE NOT PROG. Playing simple music with cellos doesn't make you prog. Adding cellos and strings to relatively regular meta structures doesn't make you prog. Hell you can play metal using just a flute, an oboe, a mellotron and a bunch of kitchen pots, and no matter how "wow" that seems, it still doesn't make you prog if your songs are simple, relatively typical hard-rock/metal.

BTW, Apocalyptica released 7th Symphony in 2010.  Was this after the Prog Metal team evaluated them?  Has this album been heard and evaluated?  I've not heard it and have no opinion on it, but I'm just curious.

I don't believe so, T posted in an '08 thread that they were considered and rejected.
So the question that I would ask is, is the new 2010 release wow pow bang enough of a prog album to get them included in PA?  My guess is probably not.  The singer from Gojira does sing on one of the songs, but that doesn't necessarily make it prog and even if it is, one prog song on an album does not make the album prog.  But given that they have released a new album since they were rejected in 2008, that would open them up for a new evaluation.

Its nothing personal but some bands simply are not what the site is all about. MetalArchives site might have this band anyway if you want to write reviews for Apocalyptica.
Well, that's what I'm going to keep doing is keep finding some of them gams in the rough. And if they fail to be on this website, I'm just going to keep on searching again for more and more until it gets accepted. That's my goal!

Or again, if you really, really like metal, MMA will have all these bands and more.
