It's time to make that major purchase I've been avoiding as long as my mother's seventy year old console piano sounded relatively decent. Lately, the action on the keys and the sour notes are making it unbearable. I had a friend's digital piano on loan for a while (back in the 80's) and that's my only experience with them. It was decent enough - it had weighted keys and mimicked a variety of classics like Rhodes, Hammond, Clavinet, etc and had some drum rhythms as well. I believe it was a Yamaha.

I love the sound of concert grand piano (who doesn't?) and the action of the keys is also important. Other than that, it would be nice to have the options like I described above but not as important as the true piano sound and responsiveness of the keys.

Any tips for me from fellow musicians would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to spend up to $2K. I'm sure there are some relatively good options for that amount, but if you feel that's not enough please let me know.

I would love to hear from any piano players who understand the importance of the keys. Thanks for reading!

Tom

I'm about to by the Roland FP-4, although the FP-7 model is much better. Both of them though are the best digi-stage pianos on the market at the moment.

Thanks Alex. I will definitely check those two out.

I managed  to get by a local music store with a wide variety of keyboards. All of the plastic keys have improved since the 80's but, weighted or not, still feel a little awkward. Then I saw it. The Roland FP-7F. It is the closest to a real piano that I have found - plus all the added features.

Alex, if you haven't made your purchase yet you might want to check it out. It carries a sale price here of $1800, but if you are a piano player first and a keyboard player second, you'll see what I mean.
