Has anyone heard about this?
According to the magazine Classic Rock presents Prog, the Rush back catalog is to be reissued in 2011.

Just wondering if anyone else out there knew more about this. I already own several copies of many of the albums (LP, 8-track, cassette, CD, remastered CD). Gonna have to be something spectacular for me to buy it all over again. A lot of speculation of 5.1 mixes, etc.

I knew there was a good reason to wait to add Rush albums. Unfortunately I already have the only two I was interested in having.

Interesting...
I have all of the 1997 remasters and the original master of every album since. If Vapor Trails gets an overhaul I will re-purchase it, otherwise they will have to be pretty darned spectacular to get my money again.

I think there was an issue with the master recording that would make reissues negligibly less horrible. The band should just go in and re-record all of the tracks again.

I agree, except they should just play the album live and release that instead. Those songs work better live (though I suppose that's true for all of their songs).

this is good news, but I bought most of the 1997 versions already. For me to consider re-purchase there would need to be enticements like extensive liner notes, visual/DVD, bonus tracks, and... of course a sonic upgrade.
Since Rush releases 4 studio albums followed by one live, there could be box set collections for every 5 discs.

I hope they will remaster Vapor Trail.

I remember reading somewhere an interview with the band which asked why they hadn't released a 5 or 6 CD retrospective boxset with bonus unreleased tracks and such, and their response was that they didn't have any unreleased tracks. It really seems hard to believe that a band that has been around that long has no unreleased tracks. There are certainly some of the original bootleg cover tracks that you can find here and there, but otherwise I am not aware of any other tracks.

I have heard similar things in that the don't really have unreleased tracks from albums sitting around somewhere.
Other then 5.1 mixes or some upgraded artwork and text, I am not sure what the new releases would contain.

As much as I love Rush, asking me to buy their entire discog a third time is a bit much.

Agree on that, if they remix the whole album like that then there will be at least one worth buying again

Agreed, I would only buy if extra tracks were included and only if quality ones.
To me this "remastered" stuff is a bit of a scam to get a band's fans to repurchase the items.
On the other hand, if they do a re-recording of songs that sound significantly different, like Rush in concert did a different verson of Working Man with a Reggae element to it, then I may consider purchasing it.

NOOOOO!!!! I literally just finished collecting all of the Rush Remasters series'. Oh well, unless they do something spectacular with each album, I'd only re-buy my "Rush essentials", namely Everything from Fly By Night to Signals.

I read somewhere, can't remember where, that Steve Wilson had approached RUSH to remaster and remix their albums in 5.1.

I wouldn't trust the article. It says that the new album will be out in the spring or summer. That's old news. The album is being pushed back to the end of the year, beginning of next.

was the question: " when you run to the bathroom you are in a _____"?
I was listening to rush in my player yesterday and re-realize something i knew for so long, the first rush albums are recorded is a not so good audio quality, you can tell when you gp from rush to lets say, Opeth's Damnation, there is definetely a gap in quality. ( and i do rip all the same way)

Vapor Trails is indeed getting a remix.

Just discovered that Rush will be releasing Moving Pictures on 5.1.
http://www.rushisaband.com/display.php?id=2462" rel="nofollow - http://www.rushisaband.com/display.php?id=2462
http://ww2.richardchycki.com/archives/167" rel="nofollow - http://ww2.richardchycki.com/archives/167
From Rush engineer Richard Chycki:
Ok, so the word is out. I've been in the studio for last
month remixing the original Moving Pictures CD in 5.1 surround. I
finished tweaks on Red Barchetta yesterday. It really was an amazing
experience to spread the original tracks of such a classic CD into the
3D word of surround. (The car speeds off, goes behind and banks a sharp
right in rear BTW). The listening experience is drastically enveloping
and coupled with songs and performances that epitomize this band, it's
definitely a great time to re-discover Rush.
After discussion with the band, the goal here was to pay serious
homage to the production of the era so a considerable amount of time was
spent researching and working through effects etc. that matched the
original but would fare well in the 5.1 world. And of course, placement
was also a critical issue. I'm pleased with the results and Alex Lifeson
was pretty blown away when he came in to listen to the finals.
So enjoy and more to come shortly!

I think having owned all albums I would only buy if there were extensive bonus tracks, or an extra CD with an album. I would likely buy again only Moving Pictures, and Fly By Night, or perhaps the debut and Signals.

I would buy some of the CDs of the albums I really love. I don't actually own them on CD. Only as mp3 or vinyl.
I would buy Vapour Trails if it was fixed.

Just posted on Rush.com:
30th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION of MOVING PICTURES
features audiophile surround sound mix, music videos, rare photos, liner notes & more -- available April 5th
Rush's Moving Pictures celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with a
spectacular Moving Pictures - Deluxe Edition via Mercury/UMe. The
reissue of this seminal album on April 5, 2011, will be available in two
formats: (1) a digitally remastered CD plus DVD and (2) a digitally
remastered CD plus Blu-ray. For this Deluxe Edition, the DVD &
Blu-ray discs will feature the album and three bonus music videos, "Tom
Sawyer," "Limelight" and the previously unreleased clip "Vital Signs,"
in both a stunning 5.1 surround sound mix supervised by the band’s Alex
Lifeson using the original multi-tracks and in newly remastered stereo
from the original analog master tapes.
Both DVD & Blu-ray formats will boast the 5.1 surround sound and
stereo audio in 96kHz/24-bit high-resolution audiophile playback which
offers 256 times more resolution than CD audio, providing the listener
with the closest experience you can have to what the artists hear in the
studio. The DVD is playable on both DVD-Audio and DVD-Video players,
the latter players will include Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and PCM
stereo playback. Blu-ray discs will also feature DTS-HD Master Audio
5.1 surround sound in addition to 96kHz/24-bit PCM 5.1 surround sound
and stereo.
The Moving Pictures experience has never sounded better or been more
moving. Also included in the package is an extensive gallery with
previously unreleased photos from the original recording sessions, new
liner notes by renowned music journalist David Fricke and 30th
anniversary artwork by original album designer Hugh Syme.
At quadruple platinum in the U.S., Moving Pictures was the band's eighth
studio album and remains its biggest selling release to date,
highlighted by the group’s best-known track, "Tom Sawyer," as well as
the hit "Limelight," radio favorite "Red Barchetta" and
Grammy®-nominated instrumental "YYZ." Rush continues to garner new fans
through new recordings and touring, and are a mainstay at Mainstream
Rock radio. Last year, Rush had 100 different tracks get radio airplay,
one of only 6 rock artists--including AC/DC, Metallica, Aerosmith, Pink
Floyd, and The Rolling Stones—to have that deep a catalog. They also are
one of only 16 artists to have remained in the top 40 in radio airplay
for the last 10 years at Mainstream Rock. As singer-bassist-keyboardist
Geddy Lee, lead guitarist Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart record their
20th studio album "Clockwork Angels" and continue their "Time Machine"
tour in America and Europe this year--during which they will perform the
entire album--Rush continues to stay true to the spirit that made
Moving Pictures a classic.

Just picked up the blu-ray 5.1 version yesterday (only available at Best Buy until May 3, I think).
Anyway - the videos are taken of the band during the making of Moving Pictures - mostly in the studio with a few concert clips as well (one of them is of Geddy playing double neck rhythm guitar during Limelight).
Sounds wonderful.
