Subject: Newbie from Budgie tribute band

Hi my name is Tony Clark. I am from Nottingham UK and I currently play bass in a Budgie tribute band called In For The kill, our website is here: http://www.inforthekill.webeden.co.uk/ Prior to this I was in a Wishbone Ash tribute band called Phoenix Rising. I am friends with Martin Turner and his band as it happens, he borrowed my bass for his "Argus Through the Looking Glass" cd. My fave album of all time is by a band called Automatic Fine Tuning. These guys were the first band that I ever saw as well which was back in 1976 (I think) and I was totally blown away. In fact I told my wife I wish to be buried with that album! My fave guitarists are Tony Bourge (Budgie), Paul Macdonnell (AFT), Pat Travers. My fave bands are AFT, Wishbone Ash, Budgie, Trapeze, Lake and many more. My fave bass players are Chris Squire, Trevor Darks, Martin Turner mmmm' they all used Ricky basses! I have been searching the web without success for info on AFT for a long time and found next to nothing. Then yesterday I came across this forum with AFT members on board! fantastic! I look forward to some discussions with you guys, although I am already on 2 other forums I reckon I can do another. Best wishes to all....Tony C.

Thanks for the welcome. The Ricky is an old one made in January 1975. Apparently there have been a couple of Budgie tribute in the past but I as far as I know we are the only Budgie tribute band at the moment. Tony C.

Cheers for the welcome, I feel at home already! Yeah I love my old Ricky. I've owned it since 2005 and got it from a guy living in North Carolina in the States. Tony C.

Welcome to the forums!
Hello and thanks for your greetings! You must try a Ricky out. There's some great basses out there but I just love the sound of these, especially old ones. Best wishes...Tony C.

^ Great to have u aboard, a few years ago there was much debate as to whether even include Budgie as a band. I am glad common sense prevailed and we find another active member :-) Enjoy your stay...

Really? I guess there are "proggy" elements in their music but I always thought of Budge as primarily a "rock"band but there you go. Chris S ? not my fave bass player Chris Squire by any chance? He was why I bought a Ricky bass in the first place!, and other great players I liked seemed to use one I hope to have a great time on here, thanks for the welcome! Tony C.

I am not familiar with Budgie - but interested - which album should I try first? Or which compilation?

Bandolier is a nice album to start on.
I met Burke Shelly in a pub toilet.

Hi Scott. Well Budge are really a classic rock outfit rather than prog. However if I was buying just one album i'd go for Bandolier it's my fave album and I suspect most fans fave as well. Try listening to some of the studio stuff on Youtube? or give this a shot from Old Grey Whistle Test:1975 this is from Bandolier (the ending on this is different to the album by the way which fades out):

Great song here!
This is us playing this at the Intake Leisure club Mansfield Nottingham, this gig was called "Bandolier Bash" a get together of Budgie fans from the Budgie forum "Bandolier" that i'm a member of:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITWbjACXMfw
Simon Lees ex-budgie guitarist joined us for a jam at this gig on the encore that's on youtube. I also forgot to mention i've met Pete Boot, the drummer on In for The Kill, he came to watch us play the other year at a gig in Kettering but he's in a bad way as he has Parkinsons' desease.

As a footnote, I much prefer the Tony Bourge era stuff ie; 1971 until 1979. After Impeckable Budgie went more MWBHM. However if you like metal try Power Supply our guitarist's fave. if you like the classics, then go early than 1979.

That has a decent enough collection of songs on it, i'm glad you are liking it. You still need Bandolier!

They are VERY raw sounding arn't they? The first one was done on a 4 track recorder apparently, the first couple of albums Budgie and Squawk were produced by Black Sabbath's producer Roger Bain I believe. They are all over Youtube so you can hear them.

Hi and welcome to the forum. As you are from Germany, have you heard of a band called Lake? and if so do you like them? or am I the only one around here that does!
No you are not. You have not asked me, yet! I am a Lake fan.
They are from my hometown Hamburg, where I was born.
Great band. I would call it 'westcoast rock', in the style of
Eagles, The Little River Band and Crowded House. If you like Lake, check
out also the other artists from Hamburg: Elephant and Ian Cussick.
Ian Cussick (a bass player himself):
Elephant:
And for all others who do not know Lake with their great singer James Hopkins-Harrison, who passed away too early (R.I.P.)

Thanks for that Formentera Lady! I'm glad YOU are a fan as well. I didn't know they were from Hamburg I thought they were from Berlin. Yes if my memory serves me correctly, James H Harrison passed away about 1991. I LOVE the first 4 albums especially Lake 1st. The rare double live album is cracking as well. When they changed from CBS to Polydor records, they wern't as good I don't think, in fact I really don't like Voices or Hot Day. Between The Lines is a great track! check out Alex Conti's brill solo.

Yes, there is quite a music scene there in Hamburg, which produces similar music, mostly west coast american inspired rock. This is not the case in Berlin. Berlin is more hip hop, techno and experimental.
