In the hipothetic case that we all agree that prog itself became officially a genre since 1969 (or seemed to be so) , we can all agree then that our favorite musical genre has turn 42 by the end of the present year :)

Prog has no time as I can still listen to Syd Barret's voice. Terrapin has been the first song of 2011...

I would prefer to think that it goes back a few more years ... and had started even before that ... since there was a lot of black jazz and blues around, some of which got recorded and some which didn't ... and for anyone of us to assume that music never existed simply because we never heard it, is kind of incredulous and insane.
My guess is that music has forever been progressive ... and is now older than all of us put together and then some ... after all Mozart is a massive progression on Bach, Beethoven is a massive progression on Mozart, and Stravinsky a massive progression on Beethoven, and Tales from Topographic Oceans an even more massive progression on all that!
I guess it depends on your perspective ... and your age or child.
At any rate ... Happy Birthday!

I think I could name a few jazz musicians older than Brubeck.

Yeah, I'll agree with the first post. Prog isn't quite as old as some people think it is but I'll concur that it officially started in 1969. I was born in 1970 so I'm almost as old.

I personally think 'prog' started 1966/67 both in the UK and US.
I don't want to argue about it, though.

Prog started with Sgt Pepper in my view and a couple of listenings to that album will back my views up. Yes, there was developments along the road, but the http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=11071" rel="nofollow - Sgt Peppers album started it all.... although Revolver was also progressive.

Seems a reasonable post notwithstanding the confusion between Prog and progressive and Tales does not represent the progressive classical baton being passed to Yes. It's rawk music. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Stravinsky are not rawk music.

I am assuming the 1969 date was chosen because that was the year that In The Court came out. But ITC did not come out in a vacuum.
In that regard, I agree with the member who dated prog back to Sgt. Pepper (1967) - though one could argue (as someone did) that it began as early as 1965/66 - and vehemently disagree with the member who suggested that "Pink Floyd doesn't count because they are not active." Who cares whether they are active NOW. The point is that Piper was a seminal prog album, and we are talking about the BIRTH of prog, not its continuance.
In this regard, prog is more likely 45 years old (a nice "round" number) than 42.
Peace.

I have some qualms about dating prog from the release of ItCofCK, but then again I'm a rabid Douglas Adams disciple, so 42 is perfectly fine by me.
