Pink Floyd to play Live 8 show

Roger Waters left Pink Floyd in the mid-1980s to pursue a solo career.

Veteran rock band Pink Floyd have been added to the list of acts appearing at next month's Live 8 concert in London.

Roger Waters will be reunited with band-members Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright for the show.

The show, organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to help fight African poverty, is one of five taking place around the world on July 2.

Meanwhile, pop fans have until midnight to apply for tickets for the concert at Hyde Park.

Pink Floyd to reform for London Live 8 concert
12 Jun 2005 14:49:04 GMT

Source: Reuters

LONDON, June 12 (Reuters) - Four members of seminal British rock band Pink Floyd will play together for the first time in 24 years at London's Live 8 charity concert for Africa on July 2, publicists for the event said on Sunday.

Guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason and keyboard player Richard Wright will be on stage with bassist Roger Waters for their first public performance since they played at London's Earls Court in 1981.

The rock legends will join a star-studded line-up including Coldplay, Elton John and Paul McCartney at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, organised by activist rocker Bob Geldof to pressure rich nations to ease African poverty.

"Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world," said Gilmour.

"Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention then it's got to be worthwhile."

to say roger left to pursue a solo career is a gross misstatement....everyone knows he left to go solo because of the abhorrent and materially driven direction in which gilmour was leading the band

I am SO happy. SO SO happy. Even if I won't be able to fly to England or anything, at least I can hear and hopefully see this happen!

I'm so glad Waters and Gilmour were able to deflate their egos enough for this to happen.

Calm down people - it's almost certain to be a lacklustre disappointment, though I'd be delighted to be proved wrong.

I just received the Floydian Slip newsletter in my email when I woke up this morning and I nearly fell out of my chair. I really didn't see this coming. Hopefully some American networks will air the show.

Even if you live in the UK, you have more chance of winning the National Lottey than getting a ticket for Live8. It's a free concert but there have already been a million or so applicants.

Of course it's great news that Sir Bob has got Pink Floyd to reform but their set will probably be limited to about half an hour at most. My guess is they'll play 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', 'Another Brick In The Wall' & one more, probably 'Money' as it seems significant for the event!

Just another FLOYD fanatic expressing his absolute sheer joy that Pigs are flying again, if only for this concert.

Dreaming about studio albums and world tours, the like of which has never been seen before...

But taking the good news one day at a time

I must share with you this little snippet from a radio interview here in the UK:

Presenter (older bloke, male, knew his music) : 'I cant believe that Floyd are reforming, how good is that? One of the greatest bands ever will close out the event (Live 8)'

Co-Presenter (younger, female, blond (probably), did not know who Pink Floyd were) : 'Who are Pink Floyd and why did they split up?'

Presenter : 'Floyd were the greatest rock band ever, they split up over twenty years ago after a blazing row and swore never to see each other again, let alone reform'

Co-Presenter: 'A bit like Steps.........'

 STUNNED SILENCE

Presenter: (THUD - head hits table)

How did they come to a decision and have they spoken to each other yet?.

It was a shock, it so unthinkable bloody great news.

They should be allowed a 2 hour set on 2 July.

Maybe, just Maybe a possible number of concerts and an album?

I think better than seein the concert actually, would be to be in that first rehearsal when they first have to speak to each other after all these years... and actually play their first note together.  I think I'd prefer to be there...

Darn, where did I put Phil Taylor's email addy???????????
