According to his website he sadly committed suicide at the age of 63. He had been battling mental illness.
We’ll miss you Woolly.
Barclay James Harvest drummer Mel Pritchard died in 2004.
May they both rest in peace.

Truly a great loss; his mellotron playing was one of the cornerstones of prog's 'classic age' & so sad after all reports seemed to suggest his inner demons were under control...
RIP

Incredibly sad news :( I always loved Woolly's input to the band most . I discovered BJH in the same first batch of 2nd hand vinyl I purchased upon discovering what Prog was in the late eighties... Yes, Genesis, Camel, Anthony Phillips & BJH. The many hours & days spent first listening to these classics opened up new sonic worlds that eventually led me to join a Prog band myself. His music won't be forgotten by myself or my children.... and if i live long enough my children's children.
Survive in Peace Woolly!

Passed on a few days back.
(Cant believe this - apparently - wasnt mentioned here, since its all over the other forum(s) )
"Once Again" is a cornerstone lp. It was the first import lp I ever laid money aside for.
Woolly Wolstenhome, his mellotron work, his sensitive, dark, deep, melancholy-lyrics will be deeply missed.

very sad saw them for the first time at nearfest 2009. Great show and he was the MC. Funny and yet dignified.
One could argue that his use of the mellotron in the majestic yet intimate sound of BJH was as suited to the instrument as any

I discovered their sounds with their wonderful live album ('74) and I saw him with BJH in 1975.
His mellotron maeastria was really great. I also have enjoyed his solo career. He was a great musician and I will certainly miss him. Only two now remains, but there are little chances to see them playing together. But, who knows.

Listening to Gone to Earth in memorium. It seems appropriate.

Sorry... Couldn't resist...
R.I.P. Wooly. Maybe it will be another musician's death that will prompt me to listen to his music finally...

I've been a long time fan of early BJH, especially Woolly's work within the band and as a solo artist. His three last albums are all brilliant. I'm kinda bitter that so few have taken the time to listen to his music. Check out Grim, and you'll hear what he was capable of. When I heard the sad news, I instantly thought of the song "Why Remain" from his unfinished Black Box - album. So I made this little tribute. R.I.P.

Went to Woody's funeral on Wednesday along with my brother who had travelled up from Norfolk. We went in my car and just made it with minutes to spare. Beautiful setting at St Chad's in Uppermill, all who mattered were there,we were there because since !969 we have followed the Barclays their music was so meaningful,at times inspiring,at times quite the opposite,at the heart of it all was Wooly, never can his influence in BJH be undermined,to write music and lyrics like he did can only come from what he experienced, thus the differing types of songs he wrote, sad, uplifting, apocalyptic and experiential, but always to that lovely backing music. T'is a sad days passing,God knows why he decided to end it all,the pain was too much I guess, but on Wednesday in a quiet churchyard we honoured him,no photographs,no converstaion, just thoughts of when times were better for us all,and for Wooly, good times they were, good music in the 60's/70's,but it couldn't last, thank God for John reforming with JLBJH,more good music, more good shows, more Wooly. Peace and love now Wooly, thanks for the wonderful times, glad we went to the funeral service,it seemed like the right thing to do,God Bless.

Last night I logged in after quite some time and I looked at the wrong place for this thread -
opened another one at the wrong place cause I didn't find it !
Apologies... to add my essential words here:
I'm not over it yet. Perhaps I never
will be... I was so honoured to get to know him personally in
2009, after a JLBJH-gig in Berlin, we talked some and I gifted
him several CDs. Some weeks later, after another show in
Karlsruhe, we talked for the 2nd and last time. He had listened
to my CDs in the meantime and I was such a happy kid he really
praised my singing ! When I attended my first JLBJH-concert
"without him" in Colmar last year, I cried my heart out
during the whole of "Suicide ?"/"Mockingbird"/"The
Poet/After the Day". Feel a bit better since then.
I'll
never forget him. His humour and warmth made me feel a brother.
R.I.P. Thanks
for the music
A lifelong BJH-fan who knows... it was mainly
because of him that I ever became one.
