That's right! Opeth will start the recording of their 10th album on the 31st of January 2010 [sic]. The band has picked the legendary Atlantis studios (ex Metronome studios) in Stockholm and will once again work with Jens Bogren engineering. Mixing duties will be handled by Steven Wilson (Porcupine tree). Possible release worldwide in the fall of 2010 [sic], through Roadrunner records. The new material has been described by the band as being "good".

We've been waiting 8 years on that one, let's give it 2 more years before we bury that whole idea.

Storm Corrosion (Wilson collaboration) has at least started, so we might see something in 2011.

Very much looking forward to new Opeth, loved Watershed. I wonder what the balance of clean/growl vocals will be? The higher proportion of clean on Watershed is one of the reasons why I liked it so much (+ the music was brilliant)...

Am I the only person who found the comment that the band has described the material as "good" hilarious? Though Akerfeldt's smart enough to have done that on purpose.

"The new material has been described by the band as being "sh*t"."

^ I thought that was quite funny as well. Mikael is a comedy master. Cool

The guy who posted this on another forum gave no source, but I'm pretty sure these are real Åkerfeldt comments on the new material:

"In the beginning it was meant to be some sort of metal album, but after writing two song I realized I was lying to myself. The classic Opethelemnts were there and the fans would have liked it, but I didn't like it at all. This album will be really different to anything we've ever done before and I want to revolt against myself in my style of writing. I don't want this album to be the same as for example Blackwater Park.

Everybody in the band has agreed on a kind of a change of style, this album doesn't sound like anything the band want to release just to keep the name fresh, I recorded a demo tape with the classic metal sound and played it for Mendez and he pretty much said that he'd be disappointed if this would be our next album. The album is very complex and sounds kind of fusion-like and I think that many fans who think they know what we're about will hate it, but I'm sure many people will love it as well. One thing is for sure, no one will find it boring."

^ That sounds interesting, I'm sure this band has much more in them that what they did so far and Watershed was already one album too much for me.

Very interesting indeed. I wonder if Opeth will perhaps be the band that indeed finally manages to convert me to 'complex jazz-fusion'! Geek

On the one hand, it sounds really interesting.  On the other, I want certain things from Opeth and this kind of makes me uncertain that I'll get them.  Either way, it sound interesting and I'll get the album.

Fantastic news! All the more so because I'm so disappointed with WATERSHED and I believe that they will cure my broken heart with the new release! Tongue

But... Wilson again? Ermm

If this is true I might actually check it out.
