Subject: Obscure PA Streaming Thread
Date Posted: November 30 2010 at 07:26
Hey folks, the idea of this thread is to discuss streaming songs here on PA by relatively obscure prog artists. I have a list of 25 songs that I want you to listen to and comment on. The only thing these artists have in common is that I haven't heard a full album by any of them. In some cases a PA stream is the only song I've heard by them. Some of these groups are more obscure than others, but generally are not 'household names' in prog circles. If you are familiar with some of the artists/albums that I post don't be afraid to comment if these artists have better songs/albums. Or conversely, if the PA stream I link is in fact that artists best song. Feel free to post your own links to PA streams of songs you think are good and more people should hear. Hopefully you won't recommend any songs on my list.
I'm going to link one song a day. First off, let's start with the German band Birth Control(Heavy Prog). I've heard many of their songs but never a full album. This is the song "My Mind" from their 1975 album Plastic People:
What do you think? A great song or does it suck? Could you write a better song?
Enjoy!

Today a song from Japanese group Wha-Ha-Ha(RIO/Avant-Prog). This song is called "Inanaki" taken from their 1981 album Shinutokiwa Betsu. I've only heard one other song by them. Check it out:

Thank you Harmo.
Today is my birthday. I'm between 18 and 40. Since I'm from Canada, I'm going to post a Canadian group today from Toronto. I used to live in the Toronto area until the damn recession ruined my life. Now I live in the small town I grew up in.
So, today's song is from the Toronto group Do Make Say Think(Post-Rock/Math-Rock). They are not extremely obscure to post-rock fans, but they are not as well known as, well, other more well known post-rock bands. This song is called "Fredericia" from the 2003 album Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn. I've heard a few of their songs but not a whole album yet. Here it is:

Now a song from American group Aviary(Crossover Prog). The song is called "Average Boy" from their 1979 self-titled debut album. I think I may have heard their first album once, but this song was all I remembered:

Great idea for a thread but you may find people here are rather addicted to Yes, Genesis and Dream Theater polls and don't care much for obscurities. Let's hope some good comes of it!
Here's my take:
Birth Control: Not bad but I can write better stuff I know their debut album which is run of the mill heavy organ rock. They sound a bit more adventurous here. The album cover is cool as well. I like the sounds and structure of the songs but none of the melodies overwhelm me.
Wha-Ha-Ha: This screams Japan from miles away, quirky and crazy, and no I couldn't write this sort of stuff Have never heard anything else from this band, and I don't think I will any time soon, I'm not quitky enough for this
Do Make Say Think Again unknown to me, but it's only recently I started dipping my toes in post-rock. This genre is all about building up tension and this song builds up quite nicely indeed so they must be a good act in the genre
Aviary Sorry, this is one that confirms again Crossover Prog is really nothing for me.
Sorry to end on such a negative note but I'm sure you have better things coming in the remaining 21 links, or you wouldn't have stopped at one 'maybe' listen of this Avaria album

Thanks Bonnek!
All opinions welcome. The Yes, Genesis and Dream Theater fans need to expand their horizons. The songs on my list cover a broad range of PA sub-genres...there is even some Indo-Prog/Raga-Rock
There is nothing from Proto, Related or Various Artists. No Neo either because the only Neo Songs I liked are by Marillion. Also nothing from the metal subs because: a)most of the prog metal I like is not obscure, b)I don't like the songs here for the metal bands I don't know. I have never heard a full album by Death, but they do have a video for a song I like. However, that song is not a stream here. If it were, I would have included them.
Anyway, another song. This time by French group Zed(Progressive Electronic). The song is called "Harkonnen" from their only album, Visions Of Dune, released in 1979. This is the only song I've heard by them. From what I've read, this is the only song on the album with guitar and drums:

Today the American group Cathedral(Symphonic Prog) with their song called "Gong". From their only album Stained Glass Stories released in 1978. This is an intrumental but the other songs on the album are supposed to have vocals. Here you go:

Is that album new songs/recordings or something recorded in the 1970s but not released till now?
Anyway, here's another song. From the German group Missus Beastly(Jazz Rock/Fusion). This is the song "Space Guerilla" from the 1978 album of the same name:

Heard the name of this band (i'm a bit of a kraut-addict ) but hadn't heard them yet. I'm usually not fond of post 75 fusion but this one still sounds quite adventurous. I might find me one of their earlier albums maybe!

I believe that they actually reformed the band for the new album. I don't think that all band members participated, but I am not positive on that.

Today the Dutch band Supersister(Canterbury Scene). Not extremely obscure, Camel named a song after them, for example. Still not widely known. I've heard a few songs but never a full album. This song is called "Judy Goes On Holiday" from their 1972 album Pudding En Gisteren:

A song now from Finnish group Tasavallan Presidentti(Jazz Rock/Fusion). One of the earliest prog groups from Scandinavia. I don't know how well they are known there, but I think not many people around the world have heard of them. I've only heard a couple of songs from their first album. This song is called "Last Quarters" from the album Lambertland released in 1972.

Have a Happy New Year everybody!
Happy New Year and please continue with this sort of threads.
I used to do loads of threads recommending albums/bands and got little to no response (and not much thread views), but then a few people would discover something new as they later told me and also in the end I do it to just share my love of the music and send out these recommendations in the hopes someone else might like it.
Oh, and kudos for this thread and for the wide range of songs and styles featured.
Ok heard of these guys but not this song. Some weird stuff in the intro, sounds like someone munching crisps, then it gets going into a nice melodic guitar picking motif. some crashes follow on sustained instruements. the keyboards sound great, very retro sounding actually, Emerson would feel at home here, ambient textures, shimmering guitars ....

You are very welcome PlumAplomb! I am familiar with Boredoms and they are great. I've heard 1 or 2 other songs from the same Wha-Ha-Ha album, and they are even better. Happy hunting!

Here's a song from Italian RPI band Area. I reviewed their album Crac! so far, but this is from their 1973 debut album Arbeit Macht Frei, which I will review in the future. The song is called "Luglio Agosto Settembre (Nero)":
Recently they released Pyrrho which I think is a collection of demos. I haven't heard it yet, but I have heard Pictures. It's on my list of future albums to review.

Today we got a double whammy bammy. First off is one of the greatest early prog epics. The title track from UK Jazz-Rock/Fusion group Colosseum's 1969 album Valentyne Suite. These guys were pretty well known at the time, but seem to have been mostly forgotten now.
As well, here's a song from Colosseum II. The song is called "All Skin And Bone" from their Electric Savage album from 1977. The only thing both groups have in common is drummer Jon Hiseman.
I have heard the Valentyne Suite album but not Electric Savage.

Here's something newer. This is a song from American band Frogg Cafe listed under Jazz-Rock/Fusion here on PA. From their 2010 album Bateless Edge, the song is called "Move Over I'm Driving":
I haven't reviewed this album yet, but I hope to sometime this week.

A song now from the original post-rock group from Chicago, Tortoise. These guys are not as popular as other post-rock bands, but they should be. I haven't reviewed this album yet, but this is the title track to their 1998 album TNT:

Now something from the German Krautrock band Brave New World. This is a song called "Soma" from their only album Impressions On Reading Aldous Huxley(1972):

A song now from Canterbury supergroup Hatfield & The North. These guys aren't terribly obscure but nowhere as well known as Caravan, Softs or Gong. They only made two albums but they are two of the best albums in the Canterbury Scene. I've reviewed The Rotter's Club, but not the self-titled debut yet, which this song comes from.
It's an excellent album all around, and this piece is fantastic. The album also has a really nice version of Eleanor Rigby in it for those Beatles fans!
You must play their rock out version of Dance Macabre from their second album! ... and then you add Vivaldi with Canons by Curved Air (both versions live and album back to back) then you add String Driven Thing's Tympany for the Devil, and then ... ohhh forget it ... Guy Guden has already done it and progressive radio is crap and not talented enough to chase really far out stuff other than hits!

Your welcome Rivertree! I agree the production isn't the greatest.
So now a song from Belgian band Machiavel(Eclectic Prog). This song is called "Wisdom" from their 1977 album Jester. The only song I've heard by them as far as I know:
You think that this bunch of folks in PA can appreciate some of that dramatic style rock? ... I mean, we can always pull out Ange and Mona LIsa and watch folks comment right away they don't like the singing! Very nice album.

The guitarist ... Yukka Tolonen also has several solo albums and they are very good. When we heard these some folks were comparing his guitar solos to Frank Zappa at the time, albeit with music that could be considered a lot less pop oriented, and more expression and "progressively" designed.

Today is a song from Italian artist Franco Battiato(Rock Progressivo Italiano). He's well known in Italy, but I don't know how much outside Italy. Even his earliest albums were not widely known even in Italy. This song is called "Una Cellula" from his first album Fetus from 1972:
I always thought his early stuff and experimental albums were nice and a lot of fun to listen to ... but I think some folks will get weirded out ... this is not Dream Theater or the prog they like ... and this ain't Rush either! It's a very entertaining and unusual listen and quite nice. I think I have the first 4 albums.

A song from Italian RPI band Goblin called..."Goblin", from their 1976 album Roller:
They are best known for having written the soundtrax for many films for Dario Argento ... sadly enough, the music is better on the albums than it ever was in the movies, where it was cut up and destroyed ... very moody and very nice all around, and quite enjoyable. Not to mention that the majority of the movies ... were really ... el stink'o!

You are the first person to comment on Esperanto. I've heard their version of "Eleanor Rigby" and it is great. For anyone interested:
I have all three albums ... and their Last Tango album has always been a favorite of mine because it is theatrical and it kicks ass! ... and it was almost the same time as Carmen's material, and I was aplying both back to back because they were fabulous all around.
I originally picked up their first album because it said something that ... I thought might be interesting ... it said a whole bunch of musicians from different countries, and of course, here I was in America, from Portugal and lived in Brazil for 6 years ... and considering how much better versed in different sounds and music I was, other than the "A Star is Born" (heheh! ) generation, and the sons and daughters of greed and advertising (greed is good!) ... I thought ... wow, that would be really kool and different. And of course, the three or four people around me thought I was weird. But it was the second album (Dance Macabre) that hit home, and the title cut is it! And a year later that third album knocked me out!

This is a song from perhaps the only convicted murderer listed as an artist here on PA. Progressive Electronic artist Bobby Beausoleil released the soundtrack for Lucifer Rising in 1972. This is the only song I have heard from it, but I have read a bit about the album and Beausoleil's history. Here's "Lucifer Rising 1" :

This is a song from UK Eclectic Prog group Gnidrolog. The song is called "Long Live Man Dead" from their first album In Spite Of Harry's Toenail. I have heard this album and the follow up, but like this one better.

Eider Stellaire were a Zeuhl group from France who released a few albums in the 1980s. The first self-titled album from 1981 is considered the best. None of their music has been released on CD. One of the members who owns the master tapes refuses to re-release the albums, being embarrassed of them. Even though you will probably never find a copy of the original vinyl, luckily, here on PA you can listen to the whole 5-song first album here:

Egg are a Canterbury trio that don't get enough love. There is one streaming song here from their third, last and weakest effort The Civil Surface from 1974. This song is called "Germ Patrol":
I like their interpretation of classical pieces, it almost makes you think that classical music was meant to be played by metal bands! For example, here is their version of the classic "Night On A Bare Mountain":

Great thread.
Being once an obscure vinyl collector I collected a lot of rare heavy psych/hard rock/proto-metal, krautrock, blues-rock, heavy prog and psychedelia back in the day. I hope you don't mind me throwing up a couple of posts.
Hairy Chapter was a heavy krautrock band with two releases, Eyes(1970) and Can't Get Through(1971) which I have on the German label Bacillus. Never seen thier first release on original vinyl though it has been re-isssued on CD.

There is no such thing as too much Indo-Prog/Raga Rock. Bobby Callender is an American artist who released the album Rainbow in either 1968 or 1969(depending on your source). This is a song called "Nature". Get your bong ready:

Polyphony from Virginia released only one album, thier s/t debut from 1972. PA has the band under the psychedelic/space rock sub-genre but to me it's more a heavy symphonic sound. My vinyl on the the US label Eleventh Hour is in good shape and was very hard to find 25 years ago.
