where in the intro does the organ take over after the massive Mellotron, on which time and how do they do it so bombasticly smooth

it is geniusly done how they merge two such different sounding instruments and do it so elegantly, it is quite mesmerising

I guess the organ comes in with the stacatto drum and bass rhythm.

I'm pretty sure the Organ comes in at around 1:02 after the big Mellotron crescendo. Then a couple seconds later the Mellotron dissapears for a bit and the whole band fades in and crescendos.

Yeah I was gonna say at about 1 minute we hear a mellotron chime in and it sounds markedly different.

The part where the mellotron fades out and then starts the opening chords again - I always thought it was either a studio edit and that's why it sounded like that, or that Tony Banks was just adjusting the volume himself (if you can do that on a mellotron), and that the organ didn't come in until the rest of the band did, but now that you mention it, it does sound like it could be mellotron joined with organ on that part.  A concert video of the song would probably show if that's how he played it, at least live.
