Subject: Bought some 70s masterpieces - what now?

This week I bought the following albums:

Yes: Close To The Edge
Genesis: Selling England By The Pound
Gentle Giant: Octopus
Camel: Camel (Edit: I know this is not their best album, but it's all the shop had in store, and I kind of like debut albums)
Rush: 2112

Now, my question is: Can you recommend me one record of each of these artists, that shows them in a different phase than the album that I bought, but is equally good?

Edit: Forgot to mention that I don't have any other album of these artists - I'm more a 90s prog-metal guy.

Thanks!

Yes - The Yes Album
Camel - Moonmadness
Genesis - Trespass
Rush - Permanent Waves

Don't really like GG

Although the line-up drastically changed, I consider Relayer to be the same phase as CTTE (long heavy symphonic pieces). But like the following suggestions it is almost as good as CTTE.

Wow. Well this will be very subjective but here are my picks. IMO of course but correct

  • Yes - Relayer
  • Genesis - Trick of the Tail
  • Gentle Giant - Not sure here. Maybe Free Hand.
  • Camel - The Snow Goose for sure
  • Rush - Either Moving Pictures or Signals. Try Moving Pictures first and if you like it, then get Signals next!

Great music!

PFM-Stati Di Immaginazione
Zenit-Surrender (Best "unknown" album)
Oaksenham - Conquest of Pacific

Yes - Going For The One

Genesis - Wind And Wuthering

Gentle Giant - hmmm difficult - Acquiring The Taste is just as good, but different phase?

Camel - Nude

Rush - Moving Pictures

Camel - Mirage, Snow Goose, Moonmadness, Nude are all absolutely excellent and a major improvement on their (admittedly impressive) debut.

Yes - The Yes Album is (IMHO) even better than Close to the Edge

The others are the probably best albums by those bands

Welcome to 70s prog!

Camel - "Harbour of Tears" is very different, yet very Camel!

I concur with the Yes album - or try "Time and A Word".

Rush - "Permanent Waves" definitely.

Genesis - "Duke" (I think this is a really good album, bar a couple of weak points). If you don't own Foxtrot, then get that too

GG - "Acquiring the Taste" - but it's not really a different phase as GG had different phases for every song, it would seem

Well...don't count out the 80s version of those bands either ... I know the Phil Collins era of Genesis isn't all that inspiring, but still not THAT bad.

Yes - Drama
Genesis - Invisible Touch (Land of Confusion is on here)
Rush - Power Windows

Thanks, but I'm not going for albums that are "not THAT bad". I know Land of Confusion and for my own personal taste it's just awful, can't find anything positive in it.

Drama isn't that bad though.

I would recommed only "Exit...Stage Left" by Rush from early 80's. Double album live, IMHO their best release.

"Can you recommend me one record of each of these artists, that shows them in a different phase than the album that I bought, but is equally good?"

(This sentence was worth repeating before I'd make my suggestions. Though "equally good" is a controversial thing... How an album from a band's very different phase can be equally good? It can be good but in a different way! You know what I mean? )

Yes: Relayer  and/or Going For The One  and/or 90125

Genesis: Trick Of The Tail  and/or Genesis

Gentle Giant: Civilian

Camel: (Personally I don't like them, but if... then Nude  or Rajaz)

Rush: Moving Pictures  and/or Signals  and/or Power Windows

Yes: try Relayer, this is different to CTTE but just as good. If you want different Yes phases, go onto Drama, then the Rabin stuff.

Genesis: a different phase would be Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering, as I went off them after that.

Gentle Giant: I'm only just getting into them, so can't comment yet.

Camel:  Snow Goose and Moonmadness are the only 2 I know.

Rush: Permanent Waves starts getting different. Rush changed after Moving Pictures as they went more into synths, so anything after that really.
