I've been listening to that concert (Yanni live at the acropolis) and i find it amazing. The intro is exeptional. It has all the components of instrumental symphonic rock. What u think.... are there more yanni albums as goog as this one? ------------- TOEFL in latin america = neolanguage |

I've pondered this myself. While Yanni does seem to have a number of prog elements in his music (complex time changes and so on), he's almost borderline muzak. His live material seems to be the most appealing while his studio work is just plain dull. I saw him on the Tribute tour and he was great. He expanded his sound considerably.
BTW, in a interview he stated he hates the "new age" label he's been stuck with. He is what he calls himself comtemporary instrumental. Which is a pretty broad label. Hell, do a poll. |

Generally speaking, I don't like Yanni's studio material that much. It sounds like plastic oozing through the speakers in the ceiling of a grocery store. However, I own Live at the Acropolis, and I LOVE IT. The DVD is especially amazing. That drummer is way up there with Carl Palmer and Niel Peart! When a symphony orchestra plays this music, it sounds so much more organic, however, in this version, it is no longer "Electronic Music", and is closer to classical than rock. Therefore, neither Yanni's studio material or his live material belong in the Archives, with the possible exception of his first two studio albums, Optimystique and Keys to Imagination. I don't own either of these, but I have a compilation of Yanni's earlier material, and it sounds very progressive. Kinda like something Vangelis would have released in his early days. After all, Aphrodite's Child were Yanni's favorite band! -------------

I agree with you pretty much. Especially about his drummer. That guy's terrific. He puts a lot of personality in his playing. I was a bit disappointed when I saw him on the following Tribute tour and he had a lesser drummer on that one. As for the DVD, picture is great, but that has got to be the worst 5.1 mix I've ever heard . The best way to listen to it is in 2.0 stereo. Even Yanni, who had no control over the DVD production, frowned on this. With 54 track digital machines running, you'd think it would be a stellar recording. I just hope they would re-visit it and do it right.
