I thought it could be cool if we could share essential music-related travel destinations that are either around where we live or just where we've been. Whenever I go somewhere I try to find something music-related! Amoeba Music (on Haight) - The best record store IN THE WORLD!  http://www.amoeba.com/ - http://www.amoeba.com/ The locations in Berkeley and Hollywood are also worth visiting, but nothing beats the SF location.Aquarius Records - A really small store but with all sorts of obscure gems and VERY knowledgeable staff. It's on Valencia st. http://www.aquariusrecords.org/ - www.aquariusrecords.org/ Rasputin Music - Another big privately owned record store. It's a little bit like a poor-man's Amoeba, but it's still pretty nice. http://www.rasputinmusic.com/ - www.rasputinmusic.com/ The location in Berkeley is MUCH nicer than the one in SF. Mill Valley Music - A store that's only a couple of miles from my house and is owned by friend of mine. It's pretty small but there's tons of prog and stuff. AND Gary (the owner) is like an encyclopedia of prog and 70's music! http://www.millvalleymusic.com/ - www.millvalleymusic.com/ The Great American Music Hall - My favorite music venue! It's been around forever and anyone who's anyone has played here. It's beautiful and has great sound, etc. http://www.gamh.com/ - www.gamh.com/ (the only problem is that it's in a really sketchy neighborhood and parking SUCKS) The Fox Theater (Oakland) - This just opened last year but MY GOD is it gorgeous! I've seen about 5 shows there, and they've all been incredible. http://www.thefoxoakland.com/ - www.thefoxoakland.com/ The Fillmore - Just a classic venue. EVERYONE has played here, from Pink Floyd, to Cream, to Opeth! It's also just really nice, great sound, atmosphere, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fillmore - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fillmore The Warfield - Another great venue... Also in a sketchy neighborhood. It has pristine sound! http://www.thewarfieldtheatre.com/ - www.thewarfieldtheatre.com/ Haight/Ashbury - The center of the hippie movement of the 60's. It's a crazy and vibrant street full of drugs, hippies, and homeless people. It's just sort of a must visit in SF. It's also where Amoeba and, my favorite resturant, Cha Cha Cha's is. Telegraph Ave in Berkeley - Similar to Haight. Amoeba and Rasputin are right next to each other here and there's a sweet music shop as well so there's a lot of music stuff here. It's also in walking distance to a bunch of venues. Los Angeles: Amoeba Hollywood, which I already mentioned... Mellotron - You have to call to schedule a showing/appointment but this is the actual mellotron headquarters! http://www.mellotron.com/ - http://www.mellotron.com/ Big City Music - The most intensely orgasmic collection of analog keyboards and equipment! They have mellotrons, moog synths, odnes martinot, etc, etc. http://www.bigcitymusic.com/ - http://www.bigcitymusic.com/ The Wiltern Theater - I saw Opeth here and it's a really nice theater. One of the walls is painted like ITCOTCK!  http://www.bassnw.com/contents.htm - http://www.bassnw.com/contents.htm Sweden: Roth-Handle Studios - If I ever get to go Sweden I will DEFINITELY go here! It's the studio of Mattias from Anglagard. The collection of instruments is UNREAL! It's the best in the world! Near Pittsburgh, we have Attic Records - They've got a HUGE, HUGE selection of vinyl, both new and used...all ends of the musical spectrum, too (lots of Krautrock!). In addition to their vinyl, they have used CDs and even cassettes if I'm remembering right. Supposedly the building across the road from their storefront is owned by them, and they keep more vinyls in there.

I used to scour the trash bins at the Capital records plant in Scranton, PA when I was a wee lad.....they used to toss warped or damaged and old, unsold records away in a huge Dipsy Dumpster. I picked up all the early Floyd records, the Band's catalouge, and stuff from Heart and Grand Funk, but I mainly ended up with scratchy Les Baxter, Danny Kaye and Letterman albums. It all stopped when I was nabbed by the city police....one of the cop's was the father of a pretty young thing I had a preteen crush on.....I found out quickly that having a reputation as a dumpster divers no way to pick up the chicks.
