I've been really getting into the work of Chuck Schuldiner as of recently. I noticed however that a lot of people don't bring them up around here. I find this particularly strange in metal discussions, people will frequently bring up the Dream Theaters and Tools and Opeths of the prog world, but without much of an understanding of where these bands got their inspiration. I find that if you really delve into it, you can find a lot of great influential bands, but the one that really caught my attention the most (especially in my initial listens) was Chuck Schuldiner's Death. These three albums in particular really struck me as albums that were incredibly innovative and influential:    If you're a prog metal fan of any sort, you really owe it to yourself to hear these albums. Each of them is incredibly progressive and forward thinking in their own way. Everything from the composition, the soloing, the lyrics and vocal delivery, this was a band that really set itself apart from the rest of the metal scene at the time. It's something that's sort of hard to explain. Something you have to experience for yourself. So this thread is a tribute to Chuck. This is a thread for all those Death fans that have been hiding to come out and profess their love for this amazing metal band. And for those who might be new to it to be exposed to some great music. -------------

I own Human and Individual Thought Patterns, and love both, especially the latter. I keep saying to myself I need to get Symbolic but somehow it never happens. Anyways, ITP is such a great album. That fretless bass works so well with the music. -------------

I have The Sound of Perseverance and Symbolic and have heard Human, all excellent albums and along with Cynic and Atheist are true pioneers of the progressive side of technical death metal.
Have you heard Chuck's last album, the Control Denied project. Its like Death mixed with Power Metal. ------------- Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

Symbolic is, in my opinion the best album they did. Perennial Quest, the last track is their finest hour. The lyrics on that song, too....wow. Actually the lyrical content on that whole album was fantastic. Going back to Perennial Quest, though, musically it is also fantastic. The last two minutes of PQ is so incredible. Human and Individual Thought Patterns are also awesome. Gotta love the fretless bass on ITP. -------------

| Death is highly appreciated among metal fans. Bands like Dream Theater and Tool just appeal more to people who have only a passing interest in progressive metal. |

Yes they are widely considered both one of the founding death metal acts and one of the founding tech/ prog death metal acts. Some appreciation for their 'pure' metal albums?  I love Scream Bloody Gore, my favourite album of Death actually.

| I am not a fan of their early albums but certainly find works like Human or Symbolic exceptiona. Sound of Perseverance is my favourite and proved that if the guy kept on going, more masterpieces were on the way... R.I.P. |

TSOP is one I haven't been able to get into as much honestly. Mostly it's the drumming. It's too busy and distracting. Control Denied is great though. Apparently he was working on a second Control Denied album before he died? I would have loved to have heard how that turned out. -------------
