I have a Sony MP3 from 2005 I think, still working well. It's no big thing, but it's sufficient, I just detest 'consumism'..
Anyway, I barely listen to my Mp3 or use headphones for that matter, they've damaged my ears... I don't want to get deaf!
Give me CD's any day.
Regarding the poll options, I haven't seen a Zune yet.

I love vinyls for the collectibility of them and size of the artwork. I do not buy into the myth that all the popping and hissing somehow 'adds' something to the music itself, though. Digital sound files are just fine with me. More convenient, too. I myself use a Zune. It's the only Microsoft product I really find completely user-friendly and well-made. Plus, I enjoy the interface a bit more than I do iPods. But of course, it's just a matter of preference.

Creative I had an iPod once and it was rubbish. Having to use iTunes was also a drag. I'll take my trusty Creative Zen, then the Zune, then some other mp3 players before ever contemplating an Apple product again. |

We agree 100%  My Creative Zen made it 5 years before it died on me, and even then the battery life was still great and it worked fine...just spazzed out finally. The Zune isn't bad and yeah, I hated having an iPod. It was indeed rubbish. |

I've had my Zen since 2007. I took it to the gym basically every day from August 2008 to December 2009. That little sucker has definitely worked quite a bit, and it still works quite well. Granted, I think there's a screw rattling in there, but the performance remains thoroughly unaffected. |

my brother had a Zen a while back. That thing could withstand a bullet and probably still work. It accidentally got caught underneath his trunk door and after trying to smash the door shut w/o realizing the zen was there, he finally found it lodged in the hatch without a scratch on it. I like Creative Zen the most, but if it were between just the zune and the ipod, I would choose the zune. I'm not a fan of any apple products, really. I had an ipod once and I found it to be absolutely terrible. -------------

Whew, I know my fellow proggers would know the greatness of Creative Zen! No on else does... And yeah I took that thing on walks/runs/bus rides/through rain and snow. It got constant use often. That thing was a veteran and worked fine until the day it died! My Zune isn't too bad though. Time will tell how it holds up of course. |

What I look for in a MP3 player is capacity and the iPod is the only one I know that offers 160gb. I've been using iPods for over three years and have had no problems. I don't see why they are terrible. I guess progressive rock listeners must go against trends and go for the more unknown MP3 players. I tried an iPod for a while (my friend's) and wasn't a big fan. I tried a Zune for a while (the one I bought on a whim) and I've been using it happily for at least 3 years now. Though I don't use the software for anything but syncing music to the device, for everything else it's not much better than iTunes IMO (and it can't scrobble).

Mine have always been defective in some way, the first one's screen started to not turn on when I started the mp3 player, eventually it stopped coming on at all. My current one worked fine but then it started randomly corrupting files, I had to reformat it to get it to work properly, once I had to reinstall the firmware. The scrolly wheel is sometimes unmanageable, and the headphone jack must be loose because most of the time the sound doesn't work properly. :( |

You can get plugins for most other media players for iPod compatibility/syncing use. I've only ever used iPods and love my Classic, although I won't vote since I've never used a Zune. Never had a problem with my iPod, but I honestly haven't used it for about 3 months. -------------

I love my Archos 5 media player - a progger's dream 250Gb hardrive and a 5" screen, wifi enabled and can read USB memory sticks and other media players. When you plug it into a PC it's just a 250Gb USB harddrive so I can use any software media player to synchronise my album collection and when I plug it into my AV equipment I can record and play video - I've used it to record all the BBC Prog documentaries so when I'm stuck on a train or in a hotel room I can watch the documentary on Krautrock or Roxy Music at my leasure. Being wifi enabled means I can stream music and video to and from it at home and can surf the interwebs from wifi hotspots when I'm out and about. It also exactly the same physical size as my sat-nav so it fits nicely into the GPS dock in my car and I can use it to play through my car radio on long journeys without having to change CDs at 70mph.
The only downside to it is its bulk - it is larger than the average mp3 player, but I've overcome that by buying its 1" 8Gb baby-brother the Archos 1 to compliment it, which is like half the price of a iplod nano.
I've got 3 dead iplods - all of them went back for repair several times while under warranty - they are rubbish.

Mine's a Zune. I've had no experience with an ipod. I think my sister is still using ipod and likes it. My first one was a Creative Labs Zen. It croaked. My second was a Toshiba Gigabeat. It croaked. I'm a Zuner...since 2006 when they first came out. I still have my original 1st gen 30GB player. I use the software to manage all my music and use the Zune Pass to download......its the best thing since sliced bread.
My daughter has an iPod.......I have tried to use the iTunes software but its just not very user friendly....it has the look and feel of "software".
The Zune software looks cool and performs very well for me. My wife has a pink Zune...both devices are holding up very well.....I can't tell you how many times I have dropped my Zune, it still plays with no issues.
My son has a Sony Walkman....seems to work very well, he's had no issues with that one either.

My iPod was great, and iTunes never did anything bad to me (except my Bel Air incident, but I easily solved it). Unfortunately, my iPod fell in the toilet the other day and it appears to have short-circuited.

I've got an 80 gig Zune and haven't filled it up, but I've been ripping at what some would consider a shockingly low bit rate. But hopefully this one will hold up until another mega gig Zune comes out. Then I might have to re rip everything. Which will probably take forever. But at this point, I'll probably stay with Zunes. I do like it's computer player, but I still use the Windows Media Player for ripping and listening to music at work and searching through the collection. For basic listening at home, I typically use the Zune player on the computer.

I listen to vinyl sometimes. But I heavily use my Ipod (as in over five hours every day) between inputting to the speakers in my basement or using it in my car. As much as I like my Ipod, I've known so many people who have had them break. Then I have three friends who have had Zunes for three or four years with no problem....So I'm not voting I guess. I like Ipod's layout more, but who really cares, if Zunes last longer they're better in my mind.
And my Ipod is a 160 GB so it's definitely enough space. I don't put video's or anything non-music on it, and I got rid of the crap I knew I'd NEVER listen to again. The kids bought me an iPod for Father's Day many years back. It's the 30GB version. Good enough that I haven't felt the need to change to something else. Really, I get tired of the constant upgrading of these consumer devices...player, cell phone, computer. It's a never ending treadmill. The computer, yeah, ya gotta eventually upgrade. The cell phone, yeah, the battery quits holding a charge and it's cheaper to sign a new contract and get a new phone. MP3 player? Well the problem I see is the new players are using flashdrive storage and I think anything close to 100GB flash is way too expensive for a mp3. HD can be wishy-washy and I think that's why the iPods die so quickly over 100GB...
And if you do drop in the toilet make sure its before your business and not after.....  -------------

Chris you can downoad the software now for free and begin to get a feel for how it might handle your music collection.
You can also sign up for a 2 week free trial account on the Zune Pass music subscription service. After that it is USD14.99 per month. Chris I am not sure if you are in the US....if not the software is available in I think 20 different countries.
You can buy music and buy/rent movies...view listen on your PC, Xbox and also buy/rent using an Xbox Live account.

I used to hate iPods...every time I got one, they would break down mysteriously within two months. However, I've had my current iPod for almost two years, and it has yet to freak out, explode, randomly refuse to play music, or suffer from universal headphone rejection. Therefore I'll vote iPod, but I mean my iPod in particular.

| Technically I voted iPod, but the real answer is iPhone. I made the switch when I got into iPhone development last year, had to switch to iTunes too which was a bit of a pain but I'm surviving with it. It's gotten better but still not where Windows Media Player was when I made the switch. I like the touch interface on the iPod app in the iPhone, easy to get around and find your music. And the device does 100 other things thanks to all the apps. So that's where my vote goes. |

Ipod touch. Its my most valued item our of everything I own. I've had trouble with Ipods though, had one of those ancient 20gb ones that lasted about two months. And when I first bought a touch, the first didn't work at all. But I have an 8gb nano thats lasted over three years and still goes strong. And my current touch has had no problems in the 2 years I've had it. Only thing I don't like is its only 16gb so I have to set up custom playlists all the time to choose which music is on it. I have a Creative Zen X-Fi with 6GB, and this year I got a Droid (Motorola Milestone) phone with 8GB, which I've been using instead of the Zen because it's simply very convenient to only carry one (small) gadget around. I use the Droid for many things - listening to music, reading books (Kindle app), watching YouTube videos etc.. Since the original thread sunk like a stone last weekend, I'd like to plug it here: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=72273 - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=72273 In short, it's about a tool that you install on your computer and an app that you install on your iphone or android phone, and it enables you to listen to your entire collection from anywhere - as long as your computer is running that software. The tool installed on your computer does check your music folders frequently and re-indexes them. The actual files are only transferred (on-the-fly) when you listen to the music, so new music appears almost instantly on the remote clients.

Back to the question though, I prefer Creative, BIG TIME.
I have a Creative Zen X-Fi, 32 GB and it is marvelous! I've had it for almost a year and I'm still loving it.
Prior to that, I had another Creative, a Zen MicroPhoto 8GB and it lasted 3 years. Still works though but the battery life is pretty crappy
I will probably never buy an iPod, too overrated. Zune, however, may get a chance from me.

Then I decided I was tired of a Zune and I wanted just a regular MP3 player, I actually wanted something like a Creative, but I ended up getting an ipod touch because Best Buy is retarded and they didn't have any other mp3 players the 3 times I went.
It's frozen up a few times but still works. Only 16gbs though... and i hate itunes.
Maybe i'll sell it and get something else...
