What a question! I don't know if I look up to anyone in particular as I don't know any of them and I only get to know them by what I see in the media. If you said respect their musical ability I always had a lot of time for Rick Wakeman and Mike Oldfield in the 70's but now that I have heard so much more since logging on to this site the amount of talent out there is vast and impossible to pick out just one individual

I forgot Neil Peart.  How?  How did I forget on of the greatest drummers of all time.  His skills in "Animate" inspire me more than any other Rush song.

The Beatles playing "Revolver" (the whole album) live with full arrangements, including the tape machines at "Tomorrow Never Knows". Let us dream...

In a more realistic way, Van Der Graaf Generator. But i think this dream will come true very soon...

Simon Cowell wouldn't have a clue about the Prog auditions he would say CRAP throughout...

Shame that as his taste in music seems to be as lame as a cheap packet of crisps.

Yeah, the way he plays the keys. I mean, Wakeman and Moraz are good too, but Emerson is an incredible composer as well.

I love ELP for the co-operation of Emerson & Lake, Pink floyd the same with Waters & Gilmour, Genesys in the 70's , Perter Hamill for his sole work And with VDGG, Robert Wyatt and so many others.

But for me, Robert Fripp is something special. With many diferent musicians he kept (and still does) composing music which is at least fantastic.

I am curious what a co-operation between him and Emerson sound like.

Peter Hammill. Nobody (except perhaps Zappa) explored so many different areas of music as he did, and yet there is something typically "Hammillish" (or "Hammillesque"?) about all of his recordings.

Frank Zappa, John Lennon, and Jimi Hendrix. Yes, I realize one hated prog, another was rooted mainly in pop, and the third died before prog even showed up on the radar screen... but those are the people I aligned with while I was growing up.

If you really need a 100% prog idol... I don't know. Robert Fripp, I suppose. I admire his commitment to his craft, if not his fans.

People to meet:

Neil Peart
Dave Gilmour or Rick Wright (not Waters, he's too ornery)
Ian Anderson
Peter Gabriel
Adrian Belew (not Fripp, he's too ornery)
Geddy Lee
The 2 Steves (Howe and Hackett)
Fish
Brian Eno
Peter Hamill
Bill Bruford
Kate Bush
Tony Levin

My vote for "Idol" would be Mr. Gabriel to be sure...
