It's nice that you included Fusion. Would Zappa be Avant Prog by your definition? That would have been my second choice.

Italian and Canterbury.
Progrock for the slightly advanced listener .
What will come next? RIO? I don't know.
My former piano teacher had an interesting theory. He stated that a lot of people (like himself) start out with metal, then move to progressive rock, then discover jazz, and in the end listen to classical music. He himself listened to Xenakis and other ' difficult composers'. I'm sure that that's the way things go for some. Not for me, although with Italian and Canterbury I seem to be moving from prog to jazz, just a bit.

I know Devil Doll and Morte Macabre, but seeing as half of those are so
obscure they're not listed on the archives and those that are mostly
have 1 album and are listed under Art Rock I'd accuse you of splitting
hairs, abyssy. You are the only person I know who has ever used the
term "Dark Prog", so no need for tears and angry faces, just choose Art
Rock and let the matter lie.

Prog Metal.
I actually prefer Prog Metal to Prog Rock.
However, I still like Rock.

Can't make up my mind between Canterbury, Krautrock, Psych/Space, Zheul, Fusion, Art Rock and R.I.O. I can rule out prog-metal and neo-prog (though one of my favourite bands, High Tide, were probably the harbingers of prog-metal, but they also fit well into "Psych/Space")

I spent almost a minute looking for the "symphonic" option.
I think otherwise my favourite is Prog Folk, followed closely by Prog Metal.

Prog Metal because I like it better than Symphonic Prog.

After seconds of strenuous thinking, I must go with fusion. But prog-metal and space tie for a close second because I like them a lot too.

Next time, leave out more genres than symphonic, and you will feel less depressed, Trouserpress

More than just my vote for Canterbury, for a start!! I should've known
space and metal would come top but, oh well... A man can dream...
And Moogtron - I left out symphonic for a very good reason, i.e. It would have been a pointless poll of I'd added it.

(for some reason I cannot quote TP's earlier post)
"Symphonic Prog" --- I dislike that name. It's an awful descriptive term for music that most of the time is anything but "symphonic." I suggest calling "symphonic prog" just "progressive rock", then the subgenres by their existing names. Then people who dislike "symphonic prog" can say, I hate "prog rock," to which fans of the genre will say, "wow, that's too bad." Then the dislikers of prog would respond by saying, "but I like 'art rock' and 'canterbury,' to which prog fans would say, 'whatever.'"

I know, Trouserpress, that's why I suggested to leave out more subgenres. My suggestion was not to add symphonic, but to leave out more subgenres. Still, if you would have left out metal, it wouldn't have worked either, I guess.
I would have given half a vote to Canterbury, and half to the Italians if I could. I had to choose though.

I think that some groups and their music takes more time than some of
us have to digest. I have to work and bring up kids and do other stuff
as well and I think that to acutally appreciate what some of these
bands are doing takes quite a bit of time and attention. Not only that
but it depends on your background as well. Most prog lovers would have
some kind of practical musical background I should imagine, either
amatuer interest through to professional.
But even there it can depend on musical ear, instrument likes and
dislikes (ie my mother made me play the violin when I was a kid and I
get violently ill now everytime I hear it) kind of experience. Some people can't handle anything to LOUDish,
so prog metals probably going to be on the bottom of some peoples
lists. We are all biased and affected for better or for worse by
'Nature/nurture' considerations even with musical appreciation. I guess
we have to live with it.

My favorite is Symphonic followed by Art-Rock so I picked Art rock.
Trouserpress - I wouldn't be so upset about people picking space and metal over Canterbury as much as I would be upset if people ONLY liked space and metal and never branched out to enjoy canturbury or any of the other genres you mentioned. I for one enjoy some canterbury (most I have heard) but I doubt it will be my favorite sub-genre.
I have probably 75% of my collection is symphonic or art-rock but the Canterbury I do have, I like and will be getting more of.
Now, if you did a post of what is your most hated sub-genre and Canterbury got lots of votes...well, I don't want to see what you would think
------------- Best of 2006 that I've heard:
PFM-Stati Di Immaginazione
Zenit-Surrender (Best "unknown" album)
Oaksenham - Conquest of Pacific
2007:
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
La Torre Del Alchimista - Neo

I like all sub-genres except prog metal, hard rock-ish and AOR-ish art-rock (Rush, Styx, Kansas etc.) and the more insipid varieties of neo-prog (IQ, Jadis, Landmarq etc.)
