In my quest to become a fully fledged member of this site, I tried to become part of the Progressive Metal team. This didn't work for some reason, with none of my messages being answered, so now I would like to become a collaborator, because I'm sick of being labelled a newbie. |

It's a shame none of your messages were answered....did you send them to a member of the team? Anyway as JJ says..keep posting and your status will change. Also as a by product, people will get to know you and see your value and maybe then you can become a Collaborator. You won't become one simply by asking in this thread. Unless you wrote a lot of reviews and THEN ask. Do you review?

I received no messages from said person. Anyway, the standard procedure usually involves spending a fair amount of time on this site, being an active member of the community. Suggesting bands, writing reviews, editing info and wanting to take on work to help the teams. You don't just walk into a collaborator's role. I spent around a year on this site before I even considered applying for a collaborator's role. The PMT is going through a lot of internal restructuring at the moment, and it would be difficult to accommodate new members when other collabs are keen to fill positions. That's just the way it is at the moment. |

I don't see the big point of becoming a member of the staff here. What happens is that your work burden increase 1000 % and your wife will site "ProgArchives collaborator status" as the sole reason for the divorce. I am not joking. |

Contributing to the database or writing reviews are the most obvious paths towards getting hundred of hours of unpaid work shoved your way, showing tact, decorum and encyclopedic amounts of facts presented objectively in debates on the forums another one.

I'm currently doing A levels, and this website is taking up most of my time in Study Hall, as I am doing now.

Being a collab is a sweet thing in the beginning............. until it takes over your life. I am the interview editor and a bit outside the collab zone. But I know the other collabs is working incredible hard.... unpaid work, that is. Personally, I have 30 interviews I need to do before..... well, soon and more offers are flooding in every day. I also have 350 albums on wait to be reviewed......... and more is flooding in. And I am not even going to mention from where the woman of my life suggested I should get my physical needs satisfied. |

I have been to Newry many, many times. I sometimes cycled from Newry around the coastline over Kilkeel and Newcastle back to Belfast. I also did Newry over the Mournes down to Newcastle and then back to Belfast. Thorough excellent bike rides and landscape. Excellent place, but with a very violent recent past. |

The mood was serious, at first.
The context of the first 4 words are concrete...."You have to be..." it tells you a starting point, its the begining of school.....what you have to do to become a Collaborator...at least that is what the author expects us to think.
Then...."Tony R.."...we have to be Tony R?? Who is this Tony R?? Hmmm
Then like a hurricane, we enter the eye....all is calm, the sun is out, its not windy, not rainy. Just like when you get to the top of that hill on a rollercoaster, the peak...its calm.
FAG...... Holy KRAPP!!!.....we are now out of the eye, we have crested the rollercoaster hill and are on our way down, into the bowels of hell. Then when you think the ride is over...."...for a year..."
WHAT!!!! Holy Fudgepacker Batman.....! The hurricane is gaining strength.....the ride is not over, we have many proverbial rollercoaster hills to crest yet.....We have to do all this to become a Collaborator?!!? An un-answerable question...certainly worthy of a follow-up release by artist chopper.
The impact of this post by chopper is epic...it leaves arcane-beautiful not in a 'beautiful' situation.
My first "post" review........I give chopper  ....Only 4 as we need to see how this release is followed up...or not. But certainly a very memorable release.-------------

I am not claiming sadness. I am just saying that being a Collab carries some responsibilities. If you see the amount of work put in by some collabs here, I think it is fair to say that it comes at a personal cost......... time wise.

Since you're eager to become a collaborator, why don't you help out with some collab tasks? We have a lot of additions to do in the future, which does require a bit of work. Try out for one of them :-) Tribes of Neurot is a band to be added. What we need for the adition is the following: - An originally written biography (as in written by you in your own words) - A band picture - The names of all their albums, with original release year - Good quality cover scans of all their albums (300-50 pixels by preference) - The name of each song on each album with track length. - Total album length for each release - Complete line-up information for each release. Add links to photos and information in this thread, and I'll make the addition crediting you. Google is your friend for tracking down information, the tasks themselves are rather self-explaining I'd think. Take a look at a few artists pages and album listings to see them exemplified :-)

The art of discovery. The chase of hunting down the band and getting the interview. It is very satisfying, to say at least. Also the discovery of new music is excellent. The All Over Everywhere album was a magic moment. Earlier today, both a CANO and a Happy Family album made my day. |

You could start by writing the band's biography, as the information you come across while researching this will largely fill in the other spaces eg discography, personnel etc. If you Google ''Tribes of Neurot'' you'll get results from Wikipedia, MySpace, Metal Archives etc. Also, you can purchase or download their albums via the likes of Amazon; the downloads are much cheaper, but the cost will still mount up as they have quite a few albums already - at the very least you can listen to the free 30-second samples to get an idea of their sound. (Here's another thing about being a Collab... you'll have to listen to music you may not actually care for that much. Just something for you to consider.) Once you've written your bio in a Word document, copy and paste and send via Personal Message to a Special Collab (Windhawk in this case I assume ). EDIT: make sure to use your own words in your bio, although I think Windhawk already mentioned that.
Here's the format/guide for writing bios (originally posted by Proglucky - see Band Biographies in How to Improve the Site):
We need to know the following information:
1- 1st paragraph: Short history, list of current and former members, style & similar bands 2- 2nd paragraph: Describe the better cds without mentioning their tracks. 3- End with mention (recommended, highly recommended or not) or brief commentary. Special Notes: When using band names ... write them in UPPER CASE; album names should appear between quotation marks "..." Ex: MARILLION "Brave". EXAMPLE:
Go to Tony BANKS written by Lise (HIBOU), CANADA IF APPLICABLE: 4- A band photo (if possible about 200 - 250 pixels wide) NOT NECESSARY but useful: 5- A list of all releases (LP, CD, Compilations, Live) with year of release, track listing (track time), line-up and the cd/album label. |

Slight corrections to description above - at least for the metal teams we don't require a biography set up in that manner. A description of the artist's or band's history and notable events will do just fine. Recommended tracks and CDs are items of a highly subjective nature, and doesn't really merit mentioning. If they have releases that have made a generally noteable impact it's worth mentioning, but for most artists added to the database we're dealing with lesser known acts, and throwing out recommandations based on personal or another person's notions of what is or isn't good aren't really recommended. Criterias for band photo size have changed, minimum 300 pixels and maximum 500 pixels. Here is the picture of a (French) collaborator (the fat man in the middle) just before he was shot by the Communist resistance in Nouvion and then shot again by the some other collabs before he was paraded through his hometown dressed up in women clothes and the had to spend ten days in a poultry shed, hiding from the two ladies in the pictures, armed with enough weapons to start WWIV. Hands up, who want to become a new collaborator ? |

Personally thinking, I really see it why someone would want to be a collaborator. Even if you don't get anything out of it but some respect among some internet people (the best kind of respect there is). At least you'd know, that you'd be doing something useful while listening to your music, and who'd not want to expand their hobbies, or even, their passions to something recreational and something they themselves could take pride of. Hehe, I'd love to be a reviewer, maybe then I'd have more motivation for reviewing LP's. It's always possible, but usually I just rather consentrate on listening to it rather than making a review, which is fun too. I was a reviewer to one site once, and it made me feel pretty proud finding my name on the sidebar there :D But one thing: I know how the collabs are mostly chosen, and I respect the fact that they board is the one to choose them, not the other way around. If one would go sending PMs and requests, and I were to make the decision, I'd probably decline him/her. Basically because a humbleness is more respectable imo. Whatever, I'm just saying what comes to mind when instead I should be sleeping. With that: good night! |

Write reviews people take notice of. I write for www.progressor.net myself, and the reviews I write there are set up in a particular manner you might use as a basis if you'd like to. 1. Presentation. Brief summary of the artist, and a brief description of the album you're reviewing placing it in context (like: "generally regarded as one of their best albums", "is their debut album, and was released in", "is by many seen as one of their weakest releases" etc. Find a suitable context, and place the album in it. 2. Comparisons. What manner of music are we dealing with? Overall style, comparisons to other artists. If it is known that the album deviates from what you would expect from the artist this is a good place to mention that. 3. Description. Describe the music in more detail. Compistional structure, arrangements, particular traits, mix and production if fiting, performance. This part should be made out so that people totally unaware of the band should get a good impression about what it sounds like. 4. Conclusion. Your personal assesment of the album in question. If you find it to be a well made album exploring a style of music you generally don't like this is a good place to outline just that. You rate the album, this is the place where you describe why you have given it. In general, language should be kept to a high standard. Use tact, and don't write anything you wouldn't have liked to say to them in person. Most of them are artists in the true form of the word, and have invested substantial amounts of time and money in their efforts. And even if the end result is about as appetizing for you as a half-rotted cabbage, treat it with respect. Describe why you have concluded in a certain manner rather than to throw out generalities without a basis in an observation or analysis of sorts. Using this as a rough guideline should see you write reviews that will be noticed. Well, if you're serious about wanting to become an official reviewer and/or collaborator, feedback will be forthcoming you know. Both titles are earned, and there are demands. In here just like any other area of life, to achieve you must invest and learn. I once had a free lunch, that was pretty good, it came with coffee and bread and all kinds of cheese and sausages and stuff.
But it didn't come with strings, so in retrospect I got a bad deal after all.

Arcane-Beautiful. ProgArchives is not about titles or how to earn them. ProgArchives is all about the joy of music. It is all about breaking down barriers and challenge our perceptions. My musical preferences is very different now than when I arrived here some years ago. Forget the titles and all this collab stuff. You are barking up the wrong tree in this thread (although it is pretty entertaining). Go to the different genres instead and explore what ProgArchives have to offer. Check out bands like Magma, Present, Flairck, Jethro Tull, Soft Machine, Manning, Elegant Simplicity, PFM, Osanna and Senmuth........ just to mention the bands from the top of my head. Many albums here are free downloads. Download them. Listen to them. Enjoy the music. Review them here. Forget your status as Groupie or Senior Member. Use ProgArchives for all it is worth. Btw some of the worst atrocities since world war two in the western world was commited in your town and surrounding area. Some of the bands in ProgArchives nipped over the border from the republic just to play a gig in Newry and/or Warrenpoint and then ran for their lives (literary speaking) back again over the border. That is a chapter of our history I would like to know more about.

Wow....At this point I would give him the "title" he wants and let him sink or swim. Ultimately its up to us, the readers, to criticize/praise the reviews submitted.
Now to criticize/praise means I would actually have to read a review by arcane... (not!)

Well, to give just one bit of personal advise, which you can ignore if you wish, you might want to consider laying off the 5-star rating. It is supposed to be a very rarely used rating.....Just looking briefly it appears you're using it about 90% of the time. (just a guesstimate) Good luck!

this is silly and uncalled for, please behave, and if people want to be colaborating don't discourage them, let them collaborate with what they have to offer,

This ought to be so, but I can imagine that this rating is used more often than it was intended to be, just because most reviewers have more of their favourite albums in their collections. If I will have the time to write more reviews and I would choose to review Close to the Edge, Wish You Were Here, Foxtrot, Köhntarkosz, Part the Second, Danger Money and Playing the Fool first, I would have a vast majority of 5-star ratings in my list and draw the attention of some watchful collabs. I will be worried more when a lot of 1-star ratings appear in someone's review list. -------------

Just my take on it. Fanboyism will pushout the 5 star ratings after 30-50 reviews and after that fizzle out or struggle to make a 100 words reviews that merit 2 stars becuase where is the motivation.
