Any song lyrics that just stuck to your head first time you heard them?

Anyway try to guess where this came from...

When all the worms come crawling out of your head telling you don't be afraid.

Van der graaf, House with no door from the fantastic album H to he, Who am the only one...received the album 4 days ago fantastic stuff. Peter hamill is such a great lyricswriter. My fave is a plague of lighthouse keepers

"And your little sister's immaculate virginity wings away on the bony shoulders of a young horse named George who stole surreptitiously into her geography revision."

It coitantly is. I love Anderson's more serious lyrics too, but that meeting of Milligan/Pythonesque humour and prog rock is the fusion of two very dear things to me and the result never fails to have me chortling with glee.

Yeah man. Those also got me from the first time I heard them. Also:

Son watches father scan obituary cards
In search of absent school friends
While his generation digests high fibre ignorance
Cowering behind curtains and the taped up painted windows

Very powerful imagery ...

Fish could be a real lyrical master at times, especially when it came to the romantic side of things. I think most of the lyrics to Kayleigh are inspired in their honesty and simplicity:

'Do you remember
chalk hearts melting on a playground wall
Do you remember
Dawn escapes from moonwashed college halls'

"You radiate cold shards of broken glass...."

"And in the end you'll pack up/Fly down south/Hide your head in the sand/Just another sad old man/All alone and dying of cancer...ohhohhhhhhhhh"

"Who was only a stranger at home/Who was ground down in the end/Who was found dead on the phone....dragged down by the stone...stone...stone....stone...stone...stone...stone...sto ne..."

"And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around"

Man, that was bleak....need something lighter...how about:

"I've got three beers and a fist full of downs/Now I'm gonna get ripped so phuk you clowns"

"And I'm hovering like a fly...waiting for the windshield on the freeway"

"It's so erotic when your makeup runs"

"Into the orchard I walk peering way past the gate"

"You've gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street,
You've got to be able to pick out the easy meat
With your eyes closed"

"Did (did did did) you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter with the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath the clear blue sky" (wow, what a mouthful!)

"Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream" (yep, I love Roger's lyrics)

...just to name a few faves

Arrgh, how could I forget the master wordsmith Neil Peart?!

"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" (so true)

My signature, from "Territories"

"And the boy pulls down his baseball cap and covers up his eyes"

"Any escape might help to smoothe the unattractive truth
That the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth"

"Gaze into his prism, knowing they are near
Leads them to the dungeons, spectres numb with fear
They bow defeated"

"Everyone would gather on the 24th of May..." (hehe my B-day)

Two beautiful ones:

What did you dream?
It's alright, we told you what to dream...

And this one a little longer:

And a ring of violet bruises
They were pinned upon her arm.
Two hundred francs for sanctuary and she led me by the hand
To a room of dancing shadows where all the heartache disappears
And from glowing tongues of candles I heard her whisper in my ear
"'J'entend ton coeur"
I can hear your heart

I guess 99% of you will recognize them!

Yes I do. As for the 2nd: I love a lot of the lyrics on side two of Misplaced Childhood.

Also: "It was morning, and I found myself mourning etc..." The pun is a bit cliche, but on the album it works. "...There is no childhood's end..." Fantastic.

Stand up and fight, for you know we are right.
We must strike at the lies, that have spread like disease through our minds.

Steep, far too steep, grew the pathway ahead
Descent was the only escape
A wolf never flees in the face of his foe
Fang knew the price he would pay

Maybe it was infatuation or the thrill of the chase
Maybe you were always beyond my reach and my heart was playing safe
But was that love in your eye I saw or the reflection of mine?
I'll never really know for sure, you never really gave me time

But now I'm the snake in the grass, the ghost of film reels past
I'm the producer of your nightmare and the performance has just begun
It's just begun

There's a photo on the mantelpiece, when you bought your first guitar
And your girlfriend came to see you when you were the rising star
You knew your luck was holding when you filled the local hall
The first time and the last time that you thought you had control

I could be a million miles away
I'm a wandering stranger just trying to find some answers
And although you're there you're a million miles away

I think you all know the most of these. The last one is from Pendragon's A million Miles away, though I lost the EP I'll always remember that line

Confidence has deserted me, with you it has forsaken me
Confused and rejected, despised and alone
I kiss isolation on its fevered brow
Security clutching me, obscurity threatening me
Your reasons were so obvious
As my friend have qualified, I only laughed away your tears
But even jesters cry

Really one could take Fish's lyrics from nearly every song he ever wrote...he is that good.

I'd like to add a little correction to the lyrics. It is not "rüh' " (which is not even a German word) but "ruh' " (which is poetical shortness for "rest", v.i.)

Right, I found the whole poem by Rückert and it reads:

in meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied.

I'm sure the typo is in my CD booklet: not speaking a single word of German, it's difficult for me to have invented the ü there... I'll check it tonight at home...

Not one of my favorite songs of all time, but one line which has always stuck in my mind is:

"in the silence of my shame, the mute that sang the siren sog, has gone solo in the game, gone solo in the game, but the game is over" (Script For A Jester's Tear - Marillion)

But my classic of all time has to be:

"The lord of lords, king of kings, has returned to lead his children home - to take them to the new Jerusalem" (do I really need to give the song title/band? )

Butterfly - Mariah Carey?

Seriously though, you're right. That is a great line and a great example of music fitting the words; just sends shivers down my spine every time, and I'm not really a huge fan of the entire song.

Well that's a very nice one. lovely lyrics you all wrote there (except the german which I do'nt understand at all).

I was'nt surprised many of you quoted "Dogs" cause it's amazing all the way. my lines from that masterpiece would be :

you got to be trusted by the people that you lie to

so that when they turn their backs on you

you'll get the chance to put the knife in.

and even more :

and you believe in heart everyone's a killer.

I'll add two more not yet mentioned :

everybody got to elevate from the norm ! - rush (vital signs, the closer of moving pictures).

the angels have fallen, they've all gone away. it's you that must find them by living each day - kansas (angels have fallen on monolyth)

Sorry everybody, I'll give you a translation of the poem by Rückert, that Mahler used in a song:

I have lost touch with the world
where once I wasted so much of my time.
Nothing has been heard of me for so long
that they might well think me dead.

Indeed, I hardly care
if the world thinks I am dead.
Neither can I deny it
for I am truly dead to the world

I am dead to the bustle of the world
and repose in a tranquil realm.
I live alone in my heaven,
in my loving, in my song.

Beautiful... The last four lines were the ones I initially quoted.

Before I have to call my lawyer, I copied this from my CD booklet: I'm not responsible for any wrong translation!!!

Not the best of translations, but then rhymed lyric is always difficult to translate. I'll give it a try though (I used to be a professional translator), but need some time for it (the problem is to translate the lyrics in a rhymed form without distorting the contents too much; it is possible though, I have done it before.) Expect my translation by tommorow.

Why?  Because the voice that sings it is just as beautiful as the words??    So lets cover a few more of those mind tingling lyrics...

- Just take a pebble and cast it to the sea.
Then watch the ripples that unfold into me.
My face spills so gently into your eyes,
Disturbing the waters of our lives.

- Have you walked on the stones of years?
When you speak, is it you that hears?
Are your ears full? You can't hear anything at all.

- Clear the battlefield and let me see
All the profit from our victory.
You talk of freedom, starving children fall.
Are you deaf when you hear the season's call?

Were you there to watch the earth be scorched?
Did you stand beside the spectral torch?
Know the leaves of sorrow turned their face,
Scattered on the ashes of disgrace.

Every blade is sharp; the arrows fly
We're the victims of your armies' lie,
Where the blades of grass and arrows reign
Then there will be very little sorrow,
  Very little pain.

-You and I are yesterday's answers

the earth of the past come to flesh

  Eroded by time's rivers

to the shapes we now possess

Come share of my breath and my substance

and mingle our streams and our times

  In bright infinite moments

our reasons are lost in our eyes

- There's no end to my life,

  No beginning to my death:

  Death is life.

- Man alone; born of stone;

Will stamp the dust of time

  His hands strike the flame of his soul;

- I give you the state of statesmen

And the key to what motivates them

On the left, on the right, on the nail

  Still I don't see a man in a mansion

That an accurate pen won't puncture

Go to town, go to hell, go to jail.

- So be closer to believing though your world is torn apart

For a moment changes all things and to end is but to start

And if your journey's unrewarded, may your God lift up your heart

You are wind blown, but you are mine.

- A tattered cloak behind the throne

It is unseen it is not known

Behind this face I am alone

I would give everything I own

  To touch you...

Hi

Brand new to this forum. Love prog and dunno how I ever missed this great site and forum.

How about " The leaded window opened
to move the dancing candle flame
And the first Moths of summer
  suicidal came."

Remember first time I heard that.

" a salamander scurries into flames to be destroyed, imaginary creatures are trapped in earth on celuloid" (feel free to correct)

To be honest that's only what came to my head. toooooo many lyrics are memorable

"rain down, rain down, c'mon, RAIN down on me!!" for ex. Very simple, very bland= very easy to get stuck in head.

My favourite is from Billy Bragg's "Greetings to the New Brunette" -

"Here we are in our summer years, living on ice cream and chocolate kisses.

Would the leaves fall from the trees if I was your old man and you was my missus?"

This song also contains the immortal line

"How can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team?"

Genesis:

-"It is my sad duty to inform you of a four foot restriction on humanoid height"

-"You know what you are, you don't give a damn"

-"The mountain cuts off the town from view, like a cancer growth is removed by skill"

Pink Floyd:

-"Will the misty master break me, will the key unlock my mind?"

-"And all you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be"

-"Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky"

-"The rusting wire that holds the cork that keeps the anger in. Gives way, and suddenly it's day again"

Tool:

-"Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow, what you need is someone strong to use you."

-"Jesus, whon't you f**king whistle, somthing but the past and done."

-"My shadow's shedding skin and I've been picking scabs again"

-"black and white are, all I see, in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be, reching out to me, let's me see".

And the short poem in Third Eye:

"Shroud-ing all the ground around me
Is this holy crow above me.
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun.
I stick my hand into his shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand.
Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been.
I do not recognize the vessel,
But the eyes seem so familiar.
Like phosphorescent desert buttons
Singing one familiar song..."

King Crimson:

-"When every man is torn apart with nightmares and with dreams, will no one lay the laurel wreath as silence drowns the screams."

-"The yellow jester does not play but gently pulls the strings and smiles as the puppets dance in the court of the crimson king."

-"Ice blue silver sky fades into grey."

Jethro Tull:

-"I may make you feel but I can't make you think."

-The poet and the painter casting shadows on the water."

...arrr, frack it! The whole of Thick as a brick :)

The Mars Volta:

-"Now there are those who find comfort in the breathing wrong, is it wrong?"

-"One day this chalk outline will circle this city"

-"look at how they flock to him, from an isle of open sores"

And the poem in Cassandra Gemini:

-"
There was a frail syrup dripping off
His lap danced lapel, punctuated by her
Decrepit prowl she washed down the hatching
Gizzard soft as a mane of needles
His orifice icicles hemorrhaged
By combing her torso to a pile
Perspired the trophy shelves made room for his collapse
She was a mink handjob in sarcophagus heels"

Flower Kings' "Stardust we are, close to divine" - kind of sums up us the progfans (actually it is Woodstock anthem, which shows where our roots come from)

But actually it should be "Rings hopes and promises fragments out of time all of these things have been spoken but still you don't understand how it feels when I'm waiting for them to be broken" Van Der Graaf Generator "My Room".

"If the sky is seared with death what is the point of catching breath - expel it!" VDGG "Lemmings"

"Welcome back to the circus", "We are clutching at straws still drowning" our beloved Fish with Marillion "Cinderella Search", "The Last Straw" respondingly

"Oh by the way which one is Pink?"

"How could an intelligent hare make such a silly mistake?"

"But there is in fact more earth than sea"

".....still you turn me on"

and so on ad infinitum

Such variety of moods, such depth of wisdom and reflection, sometimes a bit hilarious, sometimes a bit of affirmation.

Let's face it, we should count ourselves lucky. Not only we listen to most brilliant musicians (even jazzers should admit it) but we also have the best poets in rock, Morrison including!!

"So, so you think you can tell heaven from hell" -"Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.

"I would love to, love to love you" - "Love To Love You (And Tonight Pigs Will Fly)" by Caravan. It took my quite a few tries before I could sing this one.

"Se på måsarna, de ser mer än vi.

"Each empty snake-like body float, silent sorrow in empty boats" -"The Lamia" by Genesis.

"They say she comes on a pale horse, but I'm sure I hear a train" -"Anyway" by Genesis.

"So I pretended to have wings for my arms" -"Mad Man Moon" by Genesis.

"You're just a natural fact, another cul-de-sac" -"Cul-de-Sac" by Genesis.

"Throw some bread to the ducks instead, it's easier that way" -"Heathaze" by Genesis.

"No man rules this land, no human hand has soiled this paradise" -"Song For America" by Kansas.

"Just a drop of water in an endless sea" -"Dust In the Wind" by Kansas.

"Nothing he's got he really needs" -"21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson.

"I talk to the wind, my words are all carried away" -"I Talk To The Wind" by King Crimson.

"I had all my chances but they slipped right through my hands -like so much sand" -"Lost"  by Van Der Graaf Generator

But there is oh, so much more.

So much for good lyrics, but what about bad ones?

I was listening to a Rick Wakeman album earlier (well someone has to), and I heard what must be the worst set of lyrics ever recorded. Now I know that Mr. "Pass the poppadums" Wakeman isn't noted for his lyrics, but this is simply inexcusable. It makes Britney Spears sound almost Shakespearian!

The song in question is from African Bach (not a bad album overall), and is called "Just a game". Here's a sample:

"It's just a game
It's all the same
No-one ever listens to me
It's all the same
It's just a game
No-one gives you nothin' for free
It doesn't matter what I do
It doesn't matter what I say
If only I could read your mind and you read mine

I'm just a pawn
A useless pawn
Easily taken for free
I'm in the way
Or so they say
Everybody's lookin' at me
I never got the right to rule
Even though I have to play
'Cos the game is played the same across the world

and so on. Can anybody beat that for lyrical mediocrity from a Prog musician who should know better?

Since Germanic languages are dominant until now what about some Italian lyrics?

Dove stai? Dove sei?
solo dentro me.

Cosa fai? Come sei?
solo come me.
inventarti qua e là
è gioco vecchio oramai:
bussa già
la fretta di te.

Che farai amore mio,
che sorriso avrai?
Dai tuoi si dai tuoi no
cosa imparerò?

Principessa serena del cielo che avrò.
bussa già
la fretta di te.

"I'll never believe in love anymore
After this
After this "

-------------------------------------------

"And SEX was always there from when I was only eight years - tempting me leave thirsty
Sweat, skin, a PULSE divine to balance this restless MIND - it seemed so wonderfully physical
Oh the BLOOD, the lust, the bodies that color the world: all drugs to die for! Won't you share my fire?
How can LOVE make that world a minefield of forbidden GROUND?
A map of untouchable skin and SILENCED desire?

And love was there in vain, PROFOUND and deep but traced with pain - too early for a child of TEN
Loving the pure and sane he sought the goddess unstained - watching them turn to flesh again
HUNGRY for both the PURITY and SIN
Life seemed to him merely like a GALLERY of how to be
And he was always much more HUMAN than he wished to be
But there is a LOGIC to his world, if they could only see

Wishing - Sickened - Ill - Ticking

SOMEONE still this hunger (it's in my blood) always growing stronger (ticking)
BUDAPEST I'm learning, Budapest you're burning me

This is not who I wanted to be, this is not what I wanted to see
She's so young so why don't I feel free now that she is here under me?

Naked - Touching - Soft - Clutching

And then after all it lead me here to wake up again
Seeking a love that might make me feel free in myself but then it proves to be
Something that hurts inside when we touch, so I move on, I lose my way
Astray I'm trying too much to feel unchained, to burn out this sense of feeling cold
And every day I seek my prey: someone to taste and to hold
I feel alive during the split second when they smile and meet my eyes
But I could cry 'cause I feel broken inside!
COME and DROWN with me- the UNDERTOW will sweep us away!
And you will see that I'm ADDICTED to my HONESTY
Trust! 'Cause after all my sense of TRUTH once brought me here
But I've LOST control and I don't know if I am true to my soul
I've lost CONTROL and I don't know if I am true to my soul
Losing control and I don't know if I am TRUE AT ALL

[Johan Hallgren]
[Daniel Gildenlow]

And we were always much more human than we wished to be...
And I remember when you said you've been UNDER him - I was suprised to feel such pain
And all those years of being faithful to YOU despite the hunger flowing through my veins
And I have always tried to calm things down - SWALLOW down swallow down
"It's just another small THORN in my crown"
But suddenly one day there was too much blood in my eyes, and I had to take this WALK down
REMEDY LANE of whens and whys...

Empty - Licking - Clean - Choking

SOMEONE still this hunger (possessing my mind) always growing stronger (craving)
BUDAPEST I'm learning, Budapest I'm burning me
This is not who I wanted to be, this is not what I wanted to see
She's so young so why I don't feel free now that she's under me?
In the morning she's going away in a Budapest taxi I've paid
Seeking freedom I touched the untouched - it's too much - I'm BEYOND THE PALE...

Prematurity is the story of both you and me, and we were always much more human than we wished to be
Prematurity is truly the story of both you and me, and we were always much more human than we wished to be
We were always much more human than we wished to be - we were always much more human than we wished to be
We will always be more human then we wish to be

WE WILL ALWAYS BE SO MUCH MORE HUMAN THAN WE WISH TO BE..."

Second Love and Beyond The Pale of Pain Of Salvation. 15 minutes of prog glory. The best and more emotional lyrics that I never heard in music. Remedy Lane is truly a big, big, masterpiece.

"So here I am once more in the playground of the broken hearts
One more experience, one more entry in a diary, self-penned
Yet another emotional suicide overdosed on sentiment and pride"

"So I'll hold our peace forever when you wear your bridal gown
In the silence of my shame the mute that sang the sirens' song
Has gone solo in the game, I've gone solo in the game
But the game is over

Can you still say you love me?"

"Last night you said I was cold, untouchable
A lonely piece of action from another town
I just want to be free, I'm happy to be lonely
Can't you stay away?
Just leave me alone with my thoughts
Just a runaway, just a runaway
I'm saving myself"

"Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart
So sorry, I never meant to break your heart
But you broke mine"

"Kayleigh I'm still trying to write that love song
Kayleigh it's more important to me now you're gone"

It's neccesary to tell the band?

"Let me drain!
Let me die!
Let me break the things I love I need to cry!
Let me burn it all!
Let me take my fall!
Through the cleansing fire!
Now let me die!
Let me die..."

PoS again.

"Do You really think I need you?"

"Preparing for her flight
I held with all my might
Fearing my deepest fright
She walked into the night
She turned for one last look
She looked me in the eye
I said, "I Love You...
Good-bye"

Space-Dye Vest and A Change Of Seasons by Dream Theater.

"Lord, if you don't help me I can't get through this.
I can't...
Lord, I'm too old for games,
Foolish wisdom...
And I'm tired of rhetoric, meaningless rhetoric that never changes things...
Lord, just help me,
Just help me...

I was feeling god's pain and I've never had anything that's been any worse to god,
In my fifty years that wasn't born in agony, never, never...
Damn empty...
And I know that simons won't do it,
I know that revelation won't do it,
Comedies won't do it,
I know now, oh my god do I know it...

Until I'm in agony,
Until I'm in anguish over it,
I'm preaching sermons...
Oh god...

I broke down and I wept and I mourned,
Does it matter to you at all?
I can't handle this,
I can barely make it into here...

Little by little you're losing me, you're almost caught...
Love with christ.
People I know that were my friends,
I've seen them go one by one, some of my closest friends...

You're changing from what you were,
You're CHANGING,
Little by little somethings happening to you...
Will he bring you to your knees?
That's all the devil wants to do take the fight out of you, and kill it,
So you won't in prayer anymore,
So you won't weep before god anymore,
Go to HELL,
No weeping, not one prayer, still nothing,
This is life and death - and the walls go down and ruin sets in...

Where's the tears?
Where's the mourning?
Where's the confessing?
The love of christ?

I had to get the agony of gods heart...
WE... HAVE SINNED!!!"

Incredible track, and incredible lyrics from this not-so-incredible-band called Evergrey.

"Young man says you are what you eat, eat well.
Old man says you are what you wear, wear well.
You know who you are, you don't give a damn"

"Do my words mean more to hear when I am standing here?
On a stage like all your silly idols do!
Open up your eyes - all. Let your walls and grins fall.
Would you reach for something new, if the crowds were reaching too?
Are you close enough to taste their tears at all?"

Good thread! I have been listening to a LOT of Opeth lately, and have been struck by the darkness and pure evil (without being gory like some other heavy acts) of some of Mikael's imagery.

Favorites:

"I hear the baying of the hounds in the distance,
I hear them devouring.
Pest-ridden jackals of the earth,
Diabolical beasts roaming the forests." (I heard this song for the first time while I was playing World Of Warcraft, and battling bears and wolves in Ashenvale Forest. That had an impact that I always remember whenever I hear the song. )

"Face down beneath the waterline gazing into the depth..."

"Into the orchard I walk peering way past the gate"

"Ghost of mother, lingering death;
Ghost on mother's bed.
Black strands on the pillow, contour of her health.
Twisted face upon the head.

Ghost of perdition stuck in her chest,
A warning no one read.
Tragic friendship called inside the fog
Pouring venom brew, deceiving."

"Oh God if you'd save them I swear I'd always hold them in my hand
Oh God if you'd save them I'd take them west
we'd start again"

What if the rest of the world was hopelessly blinded by fear?
Where would my sanctity live? Suddenly nobody cares...
What if the rest of the world was hopelessly drowning in vain?
Where would our self pity run? Suddenly everyone cares.

Strangers passing in the street by chance two separate glances meet and I am you and what I see is me. And do I take you by the hand and lead you through the land and help me understand the best I can
