Fish-only snobs, please keep your comments to yourselves. This is for those of us who love the band, regardless of the singer.

These are the four highest-rated Hogarth-era Marillion platters. I agree with three of them. Wink Afraid Of Sunlight is great, but has never done it for me as a full-album listen the way the other three do. I personally would probably swap in Holidays or Happiness Is...

Either way, I like every Marillion album from their debut to Less=more. But from these four, I'd like to see your choices. (I don't recall seeing this one done any time recently, so apologies if anyone's sick of seeing it.)

My vote goes to Brave, which is my favourite Marillion album of all.

It's Brave for me. One of my favorite's and just a really well done concept album.

Season's End comes in close second to Brave. I can't stand Afraid of Sunlight - after that one I didn't buy a single new Marillion album for 10 years...

Afraid of Sunlight is the album that made me quit with Marillion. Because of it I don't know Marbles.
The remaining two are different and both have good things. "Living with the big lie" is a great song, but I prefer Seasons End as a whole.

Afraid of Sunlight for me, a sublime album I never get tired of listening to. All very good albums, but I find Brave overrated:) Thanks Progatron for the "Fish-only snobs" comment!!! It's about time Hogarth is recognized by this site as the far superior singer!!

From the list I only have Brave and Marbles... Brave is a 5-star album IMO, but Marbles still hasn't caught on. I won't vote, though, since I haven't heard the other two options.

Brave for me (I listened to it just yesterday and it's really great one), but Marbles are close and the two others are also very good. Hard choice but it has to be done :-)

Brave! One of my overall favourite Marillion-albums.
Holidays in Eden, not mentioned here, also has some strong moments.

All four VERY VERY close together, but if I were forced to choose it would be:
Marbles > Afraid of sunlight > Brave > Seasons End

Yes, all four are certainly good. I vote Marbles as my favourite, however overall I think Brave is the best work the band have done, but it falls down a bit sonically.

I can't choose from the list really; you've put there the 4 most appreciated and respected Hogarth era albums.

Seasons End is by far my favourite Marillion album regardless of era.

Hard poll, as I have always said that I can barely tear apart Brave & Marbles. both of these albums are, IMHO, incredible pieces of genius written by a great band at the peak of their powers. They are both very strong 5 star by PA ratings for me, but if I really had to choose, it would be Marbles, although I'd be hard pressed to say why to be honest. Probably because of the sheer strength & beauty of the bookends, Invisible Man & Neverland.

Afraid of Sunlight & Seasons End are also incredibly strong albums, and I would also refer fans or potential fans to classics such as This Strange Engine, which is an incredibly strong album on their indy label debut, and Radiation, which for some strange reason passes a lot of people by. The last "proper" studio album, Happiness is the Road also contains some extremely strong moments, especially the modern classic Real Tears For Sale.

We also, BTW, have a Marillion Round Table on Prog Bands, Artists, and Genres Appreciation.

I gave it some love in my initial post. WinkLOL I can do without  the title track and "No One Can" but otherwise that is a classic Marillion album, IMO.

If you do not have the Somewhere In London dvd, it is a must-have, and begins with a stunning version of "Splintering Heart".

A revived old poll that I guess I missed first time around....

Marbles is Marillion's finest moment, a stunning double album that deserves all the platitudes it gets.  My vote goes here.

AOS is second best, another stellar album.  Out of This World is my second favourite Marillion song (after Ocean Cloud).

Brave gets third, a fine album which is tainted by poor production, which is a shame.

Season's End is frankly miles behind in fourth.

Fairly sure I voted for Seasons End although I didn't leave a comment. I don't really understand the love for Brave.

My top four Hogarth albums at this time would be
Seasons End
Marbles
Sounds That Can't Be Made
Holidays In Eden

3- MARBLES                       3.8/5 *
4- SEASON'S END             3.5/5 *

Season's End the best, Brave close second, I'd add Holidays in Eden and Radiation.

Don't like Marbles at all. Afraid of Sunlight is pretty weak record.

I'm surprised AOS isn't running away with this.
It is one of the most perfect albums ever made by anyone. EVER

For me to listen to Season's End now is to listen to an album by a band that really aren't sure what direction to go in with their new man.
Brave is a great album but perhaps  a little too overblown. Marbles has some great songs but is  patchy.
Afraid of Sunlight is just perfect.
It has a sense of humour with Cannibal Surf Babe, a great climax with Out of This World and as for King, well that is how to end an album

I think Brave is more cohesive album, but I went with Marbles. All I really need from that album are Invisible Man, Neverland, and Ocean Cloud, but considering the combined time of those 3 songs adds up to the length of a traditional vinyl album (and it would be one of my all time favorite albums ever if it only contained those 3 songs), that's the one I voted for.

No, I'm KIDDING everyone. But I do have their first 4 studio albums, so I guess it's time to try something with the other guy now. So I actually appreciate this poll.. I'll give Marbles a try and see if I like it. Smile

Marbles...by a very large margin.  I was really disappointed by it at first but it really grew on me, especially the longer tracks.  Ocean Cloud in particular is just amazing.  I might skip over Drilling Holes here and there, though.

Brave, for some reason, is a bit too poppy for me.  I remember people telling me how dark they thought it was.  Apparently, I am darker...  Anyway, I listen to it every once in a while but do skip a few tracks.

Seasons End is ok.  Can't say I have felt compelled to listen to more than the first four songs (skipping Uninvited Guest) in years.

Afraid of Sunlight is ok, but really just the wrong direction from this band for me.  Too uneven, and the best songs are still too...something...  Simple?  Poppy?  I don't know, but I might listen to it once a year at most.  Oh, and I cannot listen to Cannibal Surf Babe ever.

Just to edit my previous post, my opinion of Seasons End has lifted since I made those comments. Also to a degree so has my opinion of Brave, both fine albums. At times you can be too close to an album you've played many times.

Not sure about this. I have actually heard very few of the albums with Hogarth, but have heard several live albums, including ones with the whole Brave and Marbles, with which I must say I ended up rather disappointed, given how much hipe they get, and I just found little to love (except for the wonderful Neverland, which is among my very favourite Marillion songs). Yet, I get the impression that if I heard them all, my favourite as a whole album would end up being Sounds that can't be Made.
