Very Tough

I can't decide between Whole Lotta Love....Immigrant Song...and Achilles Last Stand. Needs thinking about.

I quite like "The song Remains The Same"

Custard Pie for me, the opener to their finest album (IMHO)

Have to give Achilles Last Stand a vote. One of Zeps really progressive tracks. May not be one of their more popular numbers, but there is a lot of very cool playing on this song.

Song Remains the Same is a close second for me. Some of Page's most interesting playing.

Either The Song Remains The Same or Achilles Last Stand. Since the latter is behind on votes, Achilles it is.

Well, best OR favourite? It' "best" in the thread title and "favourite" in the poll question.

The best may be WLL, but my favourite will forever be "Good Times Bad Times". The opener of my first rock album. The beginning and the basis of my musical education.

I don't consider Achilles' Last Stand an opener, it's a mini-epic put as first track on the album.

Very difficult choice, so I will think on it, but I would have plumped, I think, for In My Time Of Dying if it had been there.

Very difficult, all great songs. I picked "Song Remains the Same" because it encapsulates so much Zep in one spot.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Immigrant Song is an amazing album-opener that puts the rest of Led Zeppelin III to shame!

It's strange, but I still remember buying that album as a spotty 15 year old, really looking forward to it as I spent my money on all the albums by the great bands I could find. That's 30 years ago now, and I recall clearly hating the album on at least the first ten listens. It was, to those young ears, an incredible letdown after the majesty of I, II, IV, and Houses of the Holy.

It wasn't until at least ten years later that I really started to appreciate it for the incredible folk rock album it is, and it has since become one of my favourite albums of all time, to be cherished and played at exactly the right time.

This, BTW, is absolutely not a comment on yours or anybody elses tastes or opinion, just me ruminating after at least four bottles of Pedigree aleOuch

Achilles Last Stand all the way. One of my very favourite Zeppellin songs.

Wasn't "Since I've been Loving You" in that album too? I find it much better than Immigrant Song (though I like it too). However, I remember liking III quiet a bit, many good songs in it.

I had to go with "Good Times ..." It's the perfect introduction to Bonham, plus:

In the Evening would be my second choice.

Never a big Zep fan.  I prefer the closer...CODA.  I couldn't vote...there was no choice for me. Ouch

Hm, is it, 'which opening song is the best', or 'which song is best as an opener'?
I thought at first that it was 'which song is best as an opener', so I voted for The Song Remains The Same. If I'm expecting a good day, I may want that to be my opener for when I wake up!
Immigrant song is a great opener too.
But the best song out of all of these I think is Achilles Last Stand.

I have to say that "Black Dog" and "Rock and Roll" are the best one-two punch opener on any rock album. I recall hearing them for the first time and thinking, "Damn, now that's the way to start off an album!"

Immigrant Song is just too epic... Achilles Last Stand is the close second.

"Good Times, Bad Times" is just too good for a first track on a debut album not to vote for. Bonham's footwork on the song is also heavily influencing this decision.

The Song Remains the Same and my second answer is Immigrant Song because of the screams in the beginning which makes the song great opener.
