Does anyone know what ever happened to Cairo? Why did they fall off the face of the earth? Any recommendations on any other bands that sound similar?

Good idea. Their first album has grown through the years into one of my favorite prog albums. Great band!

Thanks, I'm sure there are many that could use some hopefully good news as to a fourth album in the works.

I really miss Cairo. Loved their first two albums. Their third one never really grew on me. I've been hoping for a comeback for quite some time. Mark Robertson is a wonderful keyboardist.

Bands that sound similar : very easy : ELP (Mark Robertson is a Keith Emerson-clone) and Yes (well, difficult not to hear echoes of Steve Howe in the guitar work), and maybe UK's 'danger money'.
They are somewhat mellower than the other MAgna Carta acts.

Their first two albums are quite decent, the second is more "metal" than the first one.

Keith Emerson also liked Cairo himself and especially  likes to listen the last (long) track of the debut album. Well, that's what I once read in an old interview with one of the guys from Cairo.

Yes, I think they are very much like other Magna Charta bands, maybe more keyboard driven.

I recently discovered TRANSATLANTIC, EXPLORERS CLUB and 4FRONT. Anyone listening to them? If you haven't, you should give them a try.

Incredible band. It's amazing how little they're talked about. Just listened to this this gem on the way to work today.

They're not so well known, I think. Yes, they are great.

Their lead singer, Bret Douglas, passed away in 2011 from pancreatic cancer. I know there were rumors of a fourth album back in 2009, but alas, I haven't heard any news since Douglas' passing.

They were a great band.

Very sad, and that explains it the demise of the band.

It had been quite a while since I had listened to them.  I have a CD jukebox player with 400 CDs in it that I was listening to the CDs in order and one of the Cairo CDs came up.  I didn't recognize it but while listening I was thinking, wow this is really good.  I had to walk over to the CD player to see what it was that I was listening to.

Hi Guys, it's Jeff Brockman founding member of the progressive rock band Cairo, co-writer, engineer, drummer.
Over the years I've looked at several postings from Prog Archives, this is my first post.

Thank you for listening to our music, all the kind words and continued support!

Update - Yes, it was devastating to lose our great singer Bret Douglas. That really put a hold on us continuing on as Bret was like a brother to us and he was there from the beginning. We had so many great times together. Since I was the recording engineer on all of the Cairo Projects, I got to work countless hours with Bret one on one in the studio. He was the kindest, nicest, funniest and a super talented person you could ever know. Bret played guitar, drums, keyboards and had a music degree from collage, super talented!

There is so much more I would like to say about Cairo, so we must continue the conversations!!

Mark Robertson (Cairo keyboardist) Jamie Browne (Cairo Bassist on "Conflict and Dreams") and myself all live in the same town - there will be another Cairo Album, we've discussed it and we will figure out a way to make it happen.

In the mean time I have continued to write a ton of new music in preparation for the future of Cairo.

Also, if you are unaware of my live Cairo performance videos, I would like to take a moment and let you know I perform and practice all three Cairo albums 3 to 4 times a week in both of my recording studios.
My show is called "Virtual Live Show" and it, IMHO is awesome! I've provided links below to YouTube, Twitter, and just recently got a deal with Amazon Prime Worldwide.

Please feel free to contact me via email for questions or interviews as I have a lot to say about now and the future of Cairo.

On a side note, I am the Director, Producer and engineer of EMGtv where I have produced 400 videos with the worlds best guitar players. This is what I have been doing for the last 9 years while continuing to work on my drumming craft and writing new music.

Sincerely with the biggest, most humble thank you!!!!!!!!

That's great to hear, Jeff!

Btw, did you ever cross path with the guys from Maximum Indifference? They're from the Bay and recorded a couple great instrumental prog-fusion albums.
