You know you want to. Greetings. I'm new to this forum, and site generally, and I'd like to ask for all of your assistance, if you would be so kind.. I'm in a lull as of late, as to what to listen to. I have a 40g Ipod, filled only with 25g of music, and the only natural thing to do is try and fill it up, with music. All this in hopes to find more, (good) bands that fullfill my taste. I have been told (by a friend) that my taste is very prog-rock-oriented, hence, this post. So, as for my taste in music. Wether it is progressive-esque or not is for you to decide. (rankings are arbitrary but for the most while accurate to my taste, most of these are newer bands, which I'm more accustomed to than older, although Led Zeppelin and the Beatles are influentual) Tool A Perfect Circle Radiohead Porcupine Tree The Mars Volta Dredg Nine Inch Nails Mr Bungle The White Stripes Fantomas (Delirium Cordia especially) Dredg Opeth (just Damnation) Incubus(just SCIENCE) Sigur Ros At the Drive-In Silverchair (just Neon Ballroom) Five Point 0 Those are all I can think of off the top of my head.. But I think tool has definitely been the defining point in my music taste and probably always will be. I can't really see any other band surpassing my affection for tool. I've heard some suggestions before of Opeth, Godspeed you black emperor!, and some others, but none have really hit it home for me. If you can help, it would be much appreciated, I consider myself pretty open minded about music, and I have a thirst to want to hear, and learn more. edit; yes, I've tried all music, ign, and other 'similar artists', on the progressive archive, but really, is that any fun or affective? Pretty cold if you ask me. Oh, and I've prolly put this in the wrong forum section,I apologize, forgive me, and move it. |

the music you listed is not my cup of tea So I'll recommend something completely different.
NEO PROG Marillion - Script For A Jester's Tear, Fugazi the albums in bold, are the ones which i think are the most likeble considering your taste. Sorry Thoth, With the exception of a couple of Porcupine Tree albums, I have not heard music from ANY of the bands on your list whatsoever, which is quite embarrassing, given us 17 band names I'll go and hang my head in shame ------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me. Although they're not really prog, and no one else on this list will
recommend them to you, for your tastes, I suggest a band called The Arcade Fire. Look for a song called Neighborhood #3 (Power Out). You post on IGN? | Unless you're planning on listening to a much broader spectrum of music you might not find much prog outside the prog metal subgenre that suits you, in all honesty. I could list essential sympho, canterbury, krautrock and italian albums at you but I doubt you'd be very interested. |

A Perfect Circle, to put it mildly, is not progressive-esque, at least none of the songs I have heard. Nevertheless, taste is taste, therefore I'll welcome you. Amidst that particular list of musicians, I have to agree with you about Tool. ------------- "Don't listen to me." |

Tool is a decent dark prog metal band...with that said..If you really want to embrace the darkness and experience utter and total madness...two words...Pawn Hearts...by Van der Graaf Generator....if you dare.
Yeah...I know....A little cheesy and over the top. |
