The M-Audio Delta 2496 is very inexpensive, works with ProTools M-Powered and probably all other recording packages. I use it with PT8, Reaper and Tracktion.
It lacks preamps, though better and more flexible pres and DI's can be found cheaply...

Making a recommendation would be easier if we knew what features you need/don't need, what the specifics of t=your project are. There are a LOT of these interfaces out there. Without more info you're playing pin the tail....
