I guess this information would be hard to find out, but some were wondering what might be the highest selling prog albums of all time worldwide.
I did some research on the US and found out that Pink Floyd are the only prog group in the top 100 of album sales. After that its only Genesis with "Invisible Touch".. so really can't be included. In regard to top selling albums:
The top 5 are:
28 Million - Eagles Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975, Eagles (Elektra) 26 Million - Thriller, Michael Jackson (Epic) 23 Million - The Wall, Pink Floyd (Columbia) 22 Million - Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin (Swan Song) 21 Million - Greatest Hits Volumes I & II, Billy Joel (Columbia)
Dark Side of the Moon comes in @ #20 selling 15 million
See the rest here: http://www.infoplease.com/ipea/A0151020.html - http://www.infoplease.com/ipea/A0151020.html http://www.greglake.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4098&whichpage=1&ARCHIVE=#top">
So does anyone know what would be the top selling prog albums in your own countries?

Yeh, I was sort of surprised that DSOTM was that far down... I guess "the Wall" made more in sales because it was a double album??

Yeah, I had no idea that Zep IV sold that many in the US. It was a big album, I know, but even so.
I'm guessing that DSOTM would be the biggest prog album in the UK too. ELP, Yes and the Moody Blues also sold sh!t loads of records here too. I'm pretty sure Yes out sold Genesis in the 70's.

Nonesense. They merely...er...stripped down their sound. Yes, thats right. Thats what Mike Rutherford described their 'evolution' as entailing. A thinning out of their top heavy sound.
It's quite funny if you watch interviews with Genesis from the Duke and Abacab tours. Tony Banks tries his best to convince the viewer that his playing on 'No reply at all' is actually very similar to his playing on the 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' Mike Rutherford insists that all they were doing is saying what they wanted to in 4 minutes rather than 10 +, and that the actual music and ethos of the band had not changed.
They should have been politicians!!!
It was actually quite refreshing to hear Phil Collins say in one interview 'We thought, f*ck it. Lets sell out'

Neither can I. I cant stand that band. If I ever hear Hotel California again, and that awful three note guitar solo, I'll...I'll
Probably just moan about it some more..

Without doing a research I'm quite sure The wall wins easily in Israel. I think it is the only prog album that was realy a hit in Israel.
Also Genesys sold very well (mama, home by the sea - that album) but it is'nt realy prog right ?

No official stats, but if we discount RUSH in Canada (as their sales
would be totally skewed in their favour), I would guess FLOYD,
SUPERTRAMP and STYX are pretty high on the list. Canadians had a
'thing' for soft-prog (SUPERTRAMP and STYX).
I remember reading an article (somewhere, sometime) that PER CAPITA
Canadians bought more SUPERTRAMP albums than in any other country
INCLUDING the UK...

Rush never claimed to be a prog band. They were a rock band inspired by Led Zep, The Who and some of the better British prog acts. They have cited Yes and Genesis as influences. No mention of ELP though. I guess they're not that influential
Prog fans embraced Rush because there were some prog elements to their music, but mostly they were just bowled over by their genius and their obvious ability to transcend all musical genres. There music is above and beyond category..

I remember that Genesis and VDGG were really big in Italy during the 70's at least as touringbands. I don't know if that showed in therms of record sales.

Italy was VDGG's biggest fan base. I think they scored a number one album in Italy, but how many you have to sell there to reach that position I dont know.

(Not really prog related but) Speaking of album sales, should Guns 'N Roses be in there somewhere? I may have misread this, but I'm sure I once read somewhere that "Appetite for Destruction" sold 40 Million copies or something?
