Both directors have their distinct styles, with origenal landscapes and with a special warmth. both use alot of styeld amlmost animated scenes, I bet Tim Burton has learnd more of Gilliam though in hes style then the oppesitt, but I would bet that Gilliam may have noticed Burtons style as well
I saw Immaginarium of Doctor Parnassus yesterday and that was a brilliant movie, loved the vissuals and the colours, also seen Brothers Grimm and Jabberwochy, 12 Monkeys and most of Pythons.
I have seen most of Burtons movies from Batman, Beeteljuice until Sweeney Tod, I like hes gothic style (but I tend to think that he can varry he's casting, Johnny Depp and Bonham Carter is in all he's latest movies, (thoe they are two of my favourite actors It dossent hurt to change). he's dark, gothic, victorian style is one of the aspect i like about him.
I havent seen all to much of Gilliams work so can't myself wote, but I see similarities in their style, their tone, they both utelise animation to a High degree with perfection, both have influenced eachoter in different degree (to my eyes at least, and for knowning the impact of Monthy Python) and Burton is a nerd so he have probably sucked in alot of quirk, sharm, humour, and staging from MP, but as a filmaker I think Burton have also influence Gilliam in return by redefining much of what is vizual on screen during the 90s
Yeah Iknow i write alot ![Embarrassed Embarrassed](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)

I would say both because I'm very big fans of both of them, but I had to go with Gilliam because Burton has never made anything as brilliant as Brazil. Interesting poll BTW, I'm curious to see the results.

I just did. I prefer Uwe Boll.
Naaaaaaa, just kidding. I would say Tim Burton until "Planet of the Apes" and Terry Gilliam from times to times.
But, in fact, deep in my heart, I prefer Melies.

I love Burton... but he's not all he used to be these days. His immortal movies are of course: Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman.
I really dislike his remakes though, like Willy Wonka and so on.
Terry Gilliam is an amazing director. His best works are friggen untouchable. On a whole other plane of existence. Time Bandits, Brazil, Tideland, Parnassus, The Holy Grail, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...
No one can touch Gilliam at his best.

Burton has never sucked me in the way Gilliam has. There's a certain bias due to me becoming such a big fan of Terry's Python cartoons when I was young.

I voted Tim Burton, but I regret that in a way, reading these posts above me. Burton never did anything nearly as brilliant as Brazil, and Gilliam never did anything nearly as bad as Alice....still, though, I'd say Burton was (note the past tense) more consistent, and really influenced a relatively large chunk of pop culture with his macabre style.
Shoulda voted for both.

I like them both. They are 2 of the most original directors and have unique vision and takes on things. Scary, but I actually understand some of Gilliam's movies!

Batman and Robin is considered one of the worst movies of all time... definitely NOT a reason to vote for Burton - not to mention the fact that HE WAS NOT A PART OF THAT MOVIE

To be fair, no version of Alice has ever been a patch on the books. Also Burton does a "return to Wonderland" so it's bound to be different. All in all I like his version....visually its the best......but its a good film rather than excellent....imo.

Both have made distinctive and eye-popping movies. Gotta give it to Gilliam though. He puts so much craft and attention into his pictures, while Burton seems to just grind them out.

I adore Brazil. That and Kubrick's Clockwork Orange were my two pillars of films. So Gilliam it is, but I do like various Tim Burton films very much.
I haven't seen Parnassus. One to look for.

Gilliam. The Fisher King, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Brazil, Time Bandits...and...
The Crimson Permanent Assurance!
I enjoyed Burton early on with Beetlejuice and Ed Wood, but his dependence on Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as characters in nearly every thing he makes has gone past the point of annoyance.
