I think that Deep Purple's "In Rock" is likely the greatest hard rock album ever made. First of all, it includes the greatest rock song of all time, IMO, in "Child in Time". Secondly, the rest of the album is just straight-up awesome heavy Blackmore guitar riffs, great Gillan screams, frantic Paice drumming, thick Glover bass-lines, and distorted, brilliant Lord organ playing. The album just never lets up, except for a few quiet moments in "Child in Time". I was listening to "Hard Lovin' Man" last night and I was thinking to myself "Geez, this song was made in 1970! This is one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard!". And then of course, you have other masterful rock songs in "Speed King", "Bloodsucker" and "Flight of the Rat". Other possibilities for greatest hard rock album ever include:

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

What do you guys think?

^^ Just started my first listen and it's already better than anything by Led Zeppelin.

Those High Tide songs are pretty heavy for 1969, but they're kind of aimless jams for the most part. Some good riffs and solos, but not really any good melodies or vocals.

it may appear like pointless jams at first listen, but there are very beautiful and complex meldodiies on that album too; just listen to the very complex theme of "Death Warmed Up". and we have some real polyphony on that album too, for example in "Walking Down Their Outlook"

Indeed I am impressed. I'm not sure if it's the best hard rock album ever though, that might require some more listens. Tongue

the High Tide is much more than just aimless jams, especially those bonus cuts

I'd have to go with Physical Graffiti

Let's not forget The Who's Live At Leeds.  Not saying it's the best, but it surely ranks right up there with In Rock.

I certainly haven't heard enough to make a judgement on this, but if a poll outside prog circles was made, surely Led Zeppelin IV would win, or be very very close to the top.

I would go with Who's Next or Quadrophena along with some of the others mentioned.  I also think Steppenwolf's first album could be talked about as it happened in 1968.  Maybe even Led Zeppelin's first too.

I'll throw in mentions for Rainbow Rising and Montrose's debut but overall I'd go for Led Zep II.

^^^ Montrose?? That's a name I've not heard since the early 80's courtesy of Tommy Vance.

My choice would have to be 'Who's Next?' by The Who, although ask me again in six months time, and it would be something different.

Tuesday : II
Wed : III
Thurs : IV
Friday : House of the Holly
Satur : Physical...
Sunday : Presence

Blossom Toes - If only for a Moment (1969). A really great hard psych rock album!

This one is really great! almost growling in 1969 Big smile

Another great band is Jericho Jones from Israel

Jericho - Jericho (1972)
also
Jericho Jones (same group as Jericho. Before Jericho Jones they were called The Churchill's) - Junkies Monkeys & Donkeys (1971)
Both are really good!

\m/  Prog Metal? Tongue

From 1968.                                                                                                                                          And a nice prog song

Lucifer's Friend - Lucifer's Friend (1970). Nice Hard Rock. Sounds like a mix of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin

The first Montrose album is a long forgotten classic, good call Alan - also Rainbow Rising (been listening to that today on the way to work as it happens...). Andy - you beat me to 'Who's Next' - absolute blinder (by far my favorite Who album)

A couple more for you:

Not a bad track on this album - Aerosmith really arrived in 1976 with this one, a definite 5 star in my book.

And I cannot believe this one's not been mentioned:

Frequently listed in poll after poll as one of the greatest live hard rock albums ever - and with good reason

Oh yes - if only for the stream of innuendo that is '10 inch record'

The 'Live Bootleg' album's a frequent visitor to my CD player as well - seriously raw & Aerosmith at their peak

Talking of live albums, UFO's "Strangers in the Night" is another classic.

Ah - Strangers In The Night, yet another good call (and as you say, a somewhat less dodgy album cover than Montrose's "hello boys")

^ If we are considering live albums......then I will have to choose UFO-Strangers In the Night. These are some of the best songs compiled live I can think of in the Hard Rock category.
Michael Schenker made UFO what it was back then....

Pretty safe to say this is the one of the best live rock albums ever and captured the band at the high point of their career. Just cooks from start to finish and I've never heard another power trio quite like them...so very unique.

My favorite's got to be an often overlooked rock and roll gem Cosmo's Factory by CCR

No question for me: Deep Purple in Rock.

Although an honourable mention must go to Lucifer's Friend's first album (see above). To my mind this beats both LZ and Sabbath.

Yeah, I like 'Whats Wordsworth' too. Very raw. The opening to The Watcher is a complete mess, but it somehow comes together eventually..

Talking about pure hard rock, with a minimum of that mamby-pamby stuff we call prog:

AC/DC - take your pick from Back in Black, Highway to Hell, Dirty Deeds, Powerage
Bad Company - Bad Company
Led Zeppelin I, II
The Who - Live at Leeds
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality, Heaven and Hell

Yeah, I know too classic and obvious, okay here are some others which I wouldn't consider one of the best, but still are great:

Medusa - Trapeze
Fly by Night - Rush
Ready 'n Willing - Whitesnake (though maybe it's more blues rock.. )
High Voltage - Ac/Dc
Look at Yourself - Uriah Heep
Never Turn Your Back on a Friend - Budgie
Hair of the Dog - Nazareth

Spooky Tooth's Spooky Two would have to rank right up there.  There's guitars and Hammonds growling up out of the belly of that beast.  Evil Woman has probably my second favorite rock guitar solo of all time.

Hawkwind - Space Ritual (bring your Michael Moorcock!)

Hawkwind - Electric Tepee (with its slight Ambient Rave Rip!)
Amon Duul 2 - Yeti (don't forget the sandoz!)
Nektar - Recycled (total non stop stomp)
