 Curious to what has become of Echolyn. Thier last album was released in 1995. Are they still even together or have the members go on to other projects?

| I don't really follow Echolyn but I love much of their music. They live in my area and I have seen them in concert about six times. I even ran into one of them at the movie theater near me about a year ago. Lol. I also hung out with them and have had a few beers with them once. OK enough bragging. LOL. My guess is that they are cooking up something. Only two of them make a living out of playing music(Brett and Paul)so they don't do Echolyn to support themselves. They are probably busy with other things at the moment. They will probably put out an album by the end of this year(or next year maybe). Brett is often busy doing his solo thing or engineering or producing stuff for other people. He's kind of like the Trevor Rabin or Todd Rundgren of prog. |

| A new album was iminent a couple of years back and then it all went quiet. Back in January there was a mention of a couple of new tracks being recorded but nothing since. I'm sure it'll surface eventually. |

They released an awesome DVD which contained a recent live performance and a documentary about the history of the band. This was in 2009 I believe. I can't reccomend it highly enough, one of the best prog DVD's I won (and I have many). -------------

^ Do you mean Stars and Garden? That's the only one I know of, apart from the DVD included in the As The World re-release. If it was that came out in 2004. |

As mentioned, the last album was in 2005 and a new one is in the works (but there is very limited info). I don't particularly follow them, though I love most of their music.

I'm a member of the Echolyn user group on Yahoo, and there's been quite a bit of activity lately. Brett, Ray, Paul, and Chris all pretty regularly contribute to the discussion, especially Brett and Ray. They've been hammering together lots of tracks for the new album--my guess is it will be out early 2011, based on the stages of recording they're talking about. Lately they've also been discussing what some of their compositions have meant to them, most notably Ray talking about losing three of his friends to heroin addiction-related incidents ("Misery Not Memory") and lots of banter about "Mei." The album is taking time because we are different people now. I know
i am. Teaching has fallen in my lap and is calling me. I tend to go where the energy takes me. As i've said before i feel like i'm in a river and just going with the current to where it takes me. Sometimes its a beautiful calm ride and other times i feel like i'm drowning but i know from both experiences i'm learning and change WILL occur to take me elsewhere. Right now the river is saying to pursue college level teaching, go back to school for a degree, make a new echolyn record, record strings tonight with an artist i'm producing, play in a punk rock band with my soul mate and wife, and listen to the new Crowded House album. When the river changes course so will i. In my twenties i constantly felt like i was forcing, conquering and
sometimes failing my own reality. Because of this nothing ever felt "right". Of course i wouldn't trade those times for the world because i wouldn't be who i am today without those experiences. In my thirties i was frustrated because i wasn't who i thought i should be. I had spent my late teens and twenties thinking i was this and that without really knowing WHO i was. In my thirties i spent a decade shaking that preconception. I think we all do that to different extents, culminating in a realization/ crises somewhere between 35 and 45. Midlife if you will. Its a passage we step though and as a friend of mine says its a time when your Greek Chorus leaves you and you're standing ALONE on the stage of life. That CHORUS is the one that in our youth shouts "I'm a musician!" or "I'm a professional athlete!" or "I'm a parent with a beautiful family!" or "I'm a teacher!!". But who are we really when those ideals go away and we are left to just speak without them?? Our album has taken a while because i (we) are not the same people we
were when we made "the end is beautiful". I was in the passage when i wrote those tunes. The end of my old life didn't seem beautiful at the time (you can see it in my words) but deep down i knew it truly was. I knew change, though frightening, CHARGES our lives with a newness and energy. The new album has taken a while because when we get together i don't want to sound like i was then...it doesn't feel immediate, real or me. I can't speak for my mates but i know i can't release music that just goes through the motions. We've written a ton of music over the past 5 years but i am smart enough to know what feels right and vital and what feels like a a ghost of who we really are. We trust each others instincts to perceive those things. For the past 2 or 3 months we've been in the moment so to speak and
all on the same page enough to actually make something new that represents who we are now. On the 21st-22nd we are cutting the basic tracks to 3-5 new ideas. We are all excited! I still spend a ton of time writing songs for me, the band, other
people, etc. I know ray is the same. As we get better at that craft we know what things can be. When they don't get to that "truth" we have to figure out how to fix it. Sometimes that takes a while. Its certainly not for lack of trying. My solo album "Last Of The Curlews" was the first thing i wrote on the "other side" of my life. It is a look back, a goodbye, and a realization of the NOW. It is a "welcoming" of change and its infinite possibilities. It is me stepping off the river's edge and into the water. The new echolyn album has to be that and more... more because it has to be real and vital for ray, chris, tom and paul... not just for me. We'll know when that happens. We know it now i think. For a total of five outtakes off the new album! Plus some live material. Great stuff! All the outtakes are wonderful, just didn't match the flow of the album. I think the opinions of Echolyn fans are fairly divergent. I know some who say "As the World" is their best, but for me, although I like it, it's one of my least favorite of theirs. Some claim "Mei" to be the best, and I can see their point. Or the newest album, or even "Suffocating the Bloom" or "The End Is Beautiful." For my part, "Cowboy Poems Free" is their best album, though truthfully I love them all. But the themes of this album combined with the music and vocals set it slightly above "Echolyn (2012)" and "Mei," my next favorites of theirs. edit: "Cowboy Poems Free" was my avatar when I first joined the forum--I changed to Rocky's Filj when I joined the RPI team. But that's how much I love the album!

mei is one of the greatest concept albums ever. Behind that, I think I'd choose "Windows" (the new one). I also like their first album, it has some really cool tracks. I've been thoroughly enjoying the stuff they've put out on bandcamp and youtube. Some themes of Another Stone have been playing in my head a lot lately

I wish I had had a change to post in there about that.
Regardless of choice, there is only ONE PERSON, and if you have to make a decision to drop a portion of that person for something else, it means that what you do is not important enough to you anymore and something else is taken over!
Your work quality suffers, and your passion for it falls through, and you hope that some lyrics are good enough to make you continue.
If you want to continue, suffer or not, because your vision is your vision ... that's one thing. But when it becomes a hobby, don't come tell me that it is progressive, because your desire, passion and ability just took it down several notches!
I'm not sure, that you can tear up a part of your soul/vision, and then think that you will be happy with your life if you have a house and a car and a wide and 2.3 kids! That's a socialist convention that even Americana loves to thrash you with in Christmas commercials advertising!
The difference between some, and others, and specially artists, is that there was nothing else than their vision ... so you gonna sit here and say that Daevid Allen was wrong the whole time? Or any other visionary out there that is still playing music? There is a side that is hard ... really hard ... and America is bad about it, and makes you feel guilty for making the "wrong" choice, but I have never heard a single old man, repenting because he gave it a shot, and I can count in millions the number of frustrated folks that try to play armchair quarterback, because they did not have the courage to step right up when the time came.
THAT, as exemplified in Brett's words, is what I call "temptation" ... by the wrong devil! And now you know that the social milieu condemns the spiritual side of things to no end, because they don't want you to see the real person and artist inside that shows them they are wrong! ^ They are planning to release a new album in 2014, which would be wonderful, as well as a tour.
Side projects include Always Almost, Still, Finnegan's Wake, Brett Kull solo, Ray Weston solo... several different things, really, which are good but IMO don't measure up to Echolyn. My favorites of the above are Brett's solo albums, especially his latest Last of the Curlews. Also, Brett and Paul have been involved in Francis Dunnery's music of late, guitarist/vocalist of It Bites. Yes, they are. They all have day jobs (some music related, some not), so it takes them a long time to put out albums and they don't do many live shows at all in the past 10 or 15 years (they did a lot more in the 90's). I wouldn't expect anything from them for at least a year or two, since they just put one out last year. I'm tempted to call that one their best (Echolyn......their second self-titled release, somewhat confusingly), but As The World is probably their most progressive. Different eras of the band though, different approaches. |

I actually - dug out - Suffocating the Bloom, one of those CD's that I had bought (possibly eight or nine years ago) and never listened to. I noticed it last night and gave it a spin - I was pleasantly surprised - I thought that the drumming was superb and I liked the singer and the high tempo - change beat prog appealed to me last night I may have to get more! ------------- Play me my song.....Here it comes again....... |

I dont hear it mentioned a lot but Cowboy Poems Free is such an incredible album. While they accomplished so much on Suffocating the Bloom and As the World I feel like CPF is really something unique; there's a bit of Western twang to it that you barely hear in progrock. Every single tune on there is a stroke of genius. And geekfreek - all we know is that they're writing and recording new stuff, but Echolyn work at a rather slow pace (which of course may explain why their albums feel so flawless) so we may not even see it this year. Fingers crossed though :) |

^ They have everything recorded but the vocals and percussion, so they're moving along at a pretty decent pace. ^^ @Frogbs, CPF is my favorite Echolyn album--I think I'm pretty unique in that aspect, but it just speaks to me on every level. | According to their website their most recent album is suppose to "drop" in September(which is this month). However, this was posted in May. My guess is that the album won't be out for a while but I'll still guess early next year. |

I love Echolyn, their moozik and also love who they are as people, Tom Hyatt the bass player who happens to be hot and has a great sense of humour too, sent me their last album signed by the band, that is priceless, I love them too much, really!
