Bob Rivers' AC/DC parody "Dirty Deeds Done With Sheep" often cracks me up with the title alone, I don't even need the song.
Yours?
I know Weird Al will probably eat this thread alive (and he deserves to, he's dominated this genre for years- remarkably so, usually it's such a novelty thing, it's amazing how he's stayed popular and fresh and the guy has revealed a remarkable talent for rap in the past few years) but most fans of parody already know him inside out so don't be afraid to turn us on to lesser known gems :)

Well, talking of AC/DC I'd have to mention Hayseed Dixies versions of various Accer Daccer numbers, "Back in Black" on the banjo is hilarious.

How about Robert Calvert's parody of the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann" on his album "Lucky Leif and the Longships"? "I guess you might call us barbarians. Barbarians ba-ba, Barbarians, barbarians, ba-ba, Barbarians".

National Lampoon did an album called Goodbye Pop that included a 15 minute 'art rock suite' that is a hilarious send up of prog with recognizable references to Yes, Focus, Tull and others.
People involved included Paul Schaeffer and a couple guys who went on to do Spinal Tap. In fact its pretty obvious this song/skit was the inspiration to make Spinal Tap.
The liner notes to the song are funny and say something like there are 15 bands wrong with this song, can you name them?
Anyone else ever hear this great satire?

I like Mörglbl's cleaver parodies on "Highway to Hell" and "Smoke on the Water".

John Lennon parodying Paul McCartney in Let It Be. On the rooftop, at the end, he sings:
"Sweet Loretta Fartin' thought she was a cleaner, but she was a frying pan."
I saw a comic on television play "Stairway to Heaven" and substitute the words from the theme to Gilligan's Island. It's hilarious - and it works. Try it!

The Ruttles-the Beatles parody done by Neil Innes, who did all the original songs for Monty Python. There was even a mockumentary done about them. Fantastic stuff!!!

Yes, The Rutles. Especially Piggy In The Middle, which I couldn't find a movieclip on youtube.
Does We're Only in it For the Money count? And how about Kraftwerk's: fahren, fahren, fahren... instead of the Beach Boys fun, fun, fun...?

Albertos Y Lost Trios Paranoias were pretty big towards the end of the 70s, touring with Hawkwind and later headlining with support from The Police and The Stranglers. Their parodies were in the British tradition of The Bonzo Dog Do Da Band (rather than the Baron Knights or The Grumbleweeds) so weren't straight rips from well known tunes but original works in genre styles, and for that they take a while to sink in who exactly they are lampooning, but it does mean that (unlike other comedy parodies) you can listen to them more than once. Their most famous release was the Snuff Rock EP that lampooned The Pistols, The Clash and The Dammed, but they also had a pop at Acid Rock, Frank Zappa, Barry White, Demis Roussos, Lou Reed, Bob Marley & Prince Far I, Pink Floyd & Hawkwind, Status Quo, Abba and Southern Boogie.

..of course a lot of The Beatles double white album was in the form of parody.

Dean: Isn't that something that was decided retroactively to defend a lot of the silliness on it?
Also worth mentioning is The Lonely Island, a parody hip-hop group who've done several hilarious songs. My favourite is Like A Boss. (But yes that's Justin Timberlake in Dick In A Box and T-Pain in I'm On A Boat.)
Also, hip-hop fans might like to check out Fear Of A Black Hat, which is a rap movie in the vein of Spinal Tap.

^ Fear of a Black Hat is a rip on NWA, if you were following NWA when they first came out, the movie is deadly accurate, even copying TV interviews and promo posing they did.

Well yeah the name of the group in Fear Of A Black Hat is NWH (Niggaz With Hats). I always thought Tasty Taste (one of the main characters) was a hilarious rapper name.
There's another rap parody movie of a similar scope called CB4 but FOABH is generally agreed to be better.

Robert Calvert was an insane genius, and a brilliant singer. I've never heard Dave Brock sing Hawkwind's Spirit of the Age and Quark, Strangeness and Charm with as much humour and wit as Bob did.
As for parodies, I think he was making fun of Kraftwerk's Autobahn (1975) or Trans Europa Express (1977) in his song The Luminous Green Glow Of The Dials Of The Dashboard (At Night) (1981)

As much as I enjoy Weird Al's song parodies, I believe his style or genre parodies are often overlooked. Some of the best include "Dare To Be Stupid" (Devo style parody), "Mr. Popeil" (B-52's style parody), "One More Minute" (doowop parody) and my personal favorite, "The Biggest Ball Of Twine In Minnesota" (Harry Chapin style parody - it kinda resembles "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas").

Seems to be a lot from the guy I haven't heard yet. "Dare To Be Stupid" is classic.

I know quite a number of parodies, but my vote of the best one goes to the track 'Monsters Of Schmock' by the Rodgau Monotones on their album Silberhochzeit, where they take the mick out of songs like Smoke on the Water and some AC/DC track I can't remember the name of now.
It's done in perfect lounge-jazz shoo-bee-doo slimy crooner-voice style. Absolutely nails it!

Could be considered a parody but I think it's a cover version.
Not so much a cover or a parody, more of a deconstruction.

I think The Tubes are very capable of doing parodies but they are much more satirical. They did a riotous Beatles cover on the Live album; "I Saw Her Standing There" to accompany the great punk satire "I Was A Punk Before You Where A Punk".

Has there ever been a better parody of the Beach Boys as the second of these three tracks? ((Sorry, they were uploaded as a bunch by someone else; skip to 4:25 for the song I mean)."Barbarians - bah, bah, barbarians". Yes indeeed.. The thiird track is a nice parody too, this time of a shanty. The whole album is full of parodies, including a parody of avantgarde music..

Weird Al has done some funny parodies, but my top one is Zappa's Were Only In It For The Money. It was a parody of style more than a direct parody of songs.

That's an amazing album and it's a satire of the 1960s!
Flower Punk is done in the style of "Hey Joe", or so I have read from either The Real Frank Zappa Book

Speaking of Mr. Yankovic, here's his latest - for which his target has refused permission:
Edit: apparently, the management of the parodied artist has caved, and the song will be on Al's next album as planned. Behold, the power of the Intertubez.

At the beginning of side two of Atomic Rooster's album Made In England is "Intro", which is a brief parody of a bible thumping minister of the evangelical variety bemoaning the world
Chris Farlowe-"In this day and age,wo, there's lots of strife in the world, and i've got a little message that i want everybody to hear-please don't fight and fuss and work" he continues, and then the plug is pulled soon after, sounding like the song slowing down to nothing
So much for the fire and brimstone minister!
