Both are excellent, but Foxtrot slightly edges it for not having tracks like More Fool Me and I Know What I Like.

Ironically, I've been spinning both a lot lately, but Foxtrot is my favorite Genesis album. Both are virtually flawless, but I think Foxtrot is bit more consistent for my tastes.

Selling England by the Pound... if only it didn't include The Battle of Epping Forest (for me, this song demerits the album more than More Fool Me and I Know What I Like).

Of course both albums are legendary, but Foxtrot is not perfect at all ..althought in SEBTP they reach to the balance in their music so I´ll go with it...

Foxtrot, mostly for 'Suppers Ready' and 'Can Utility...'

I can understand why SEBTP gets the praise it does. It was the album, where the band really started to play well together, and the production is better than its predecessors. Firth of Fifth and Cinema Show are, without a doubt among the bands best songs, but I tend to prefer the live versions I've heard. However, the Suppers Ready on Foxtrot has never been done better with Collins at the helm. Not that I've heard anyway.

I have a few bands that I never stop listening to, but it´s funny how their records change over time. Some of my favourites now have easily super-seeded, what I initially thought of being "the absolute masterpiece" of the band. Pink Floyd, King Crimson, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Genesis, Herbie Hancock, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Captain Beefheart, Porcupine Tree, Amon Düül 2 and a biib-load of others- all share this quality.
Incidentally, if you´d asked me this question a year ago, I´d pick Selling over Foxtrot. Today it´s the other way around.

Foxtrot. No real weak track on the album and you've got Watcher of the Skies, Get 'Em Out By Friday, Can Utility and the Coastliners (one of the great under appreciated prog songs), and Suppers Ready!
SEBTP has Dancing... and Firth of Fifth. The other songs are okay, but no match for Foxtrot.

Hard to explain why I think that. I'll guess that Selling has more people who would give it a 5, but the people who would give a 5 to Foxtrot, which is many, like it a lot more. There are many cases where average ratings don't reflect on how popular it is. Most people like Brain Salad Surgery more than ELP's debut for instance, but the debut has a higher rating.

I'm hot to trot for the Fox although I might sell out for England.

What's cool about those albums is there was a change in style but it's still all progressive.

Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme are closer cousins.

Foxtrot, without question. Selling England By The Pound has always been just short of great to me because it's too unfocused. Foxtrot is really streamlined and gripping, and no prog song, ever, will be better than Supper's Ready.

Foxtrot.. I've never understood the hype around Selling England... since only about 3 of the songs are often lauded, yet the others have either mixed opinions or are generally hated.
Foxtrot has no really weak track, yet I can't really stand to listen to about half of Selling England...

After the top 3 of Lamb, Trick and Wind, I guess Selling England is my next favourite. Without Wardrobe and Epping Forest it could be the best. I've never found Foxtrot to be very special, I prefer Trespass to it.

Oh, my God! How could Foxtrot beat SEBTP? SEBTP has a more audible Hackett guitar, brainy compositions, and a serious concept. Foxtrot has some cold music and incoherence on 'Supper'.

I simply can't choose between these 2 classic era Genesis releases.  I think Nursery Crymes, Foxtrot, Selling England and.....Trick of the Tail are all equally great.

Supper is ready for me too: Foxtrot all the way. It's a true masterpiece. Selling England in its two best bites, that are Firth of Fifth and The Cinema Show, sounds like an improvisation to me for most of the time. I am obviously aware that Selling England tops most of charts, but as for me, Foxtrot is better and Supper's Ready is a fantastic piece of music in all history of music, of all genres. The positive reception of Supper's Ready, I am pleased to admit, is even being further enhanced through reading relevant part of Chris James' Stories of Genesis (selling by the Pound for Kindles). They are seriously powerful turbochargers for best Genesis' artwork!

Supper's Ready was a masterpiece, Watcher was simply stunning, Out by Friday was extraordinary, Horizons was beautiful, Can-Utility was breathtaking and Time Table was not bad at all.

But never better than Selling England. Sure, it had the awful More Fool Me, but it had 5 masterpieces as well as a great bookend track. I Know What I Like is definitely forgiveable, seeing as it was basically a catchy prog track (imo). It's a wonder how Foxtrot managed to crush SEbtP so hard...

EDIT: After discovering what "multi-vote poll" means, it's all very clear to me...

Selling England by the Pound. Better all around album. Better musicianship. Lacked a little aggression; not able to punch through on some tracks. But, oh well, neither was as good as any of the others (The Lamb, Nursery Cryme, Trespass). They still represent a high standard though.
