GREEN DAY SUCKS. billie joe is hot?!
he’s the ugliest freak ever... anyway, why are all their fans discussing greendays hotness? the answer is simple: there’s no music to discuss, so they
are talking about looks  Reminds me of
Backstreet Boys Nsync ,etc. actually, what is the difference? they are all cheap
commercial pop stars who cant really sing or
play. a real rock band should be devoted to
music. classic bands like Led Zep, Yes, Genesis, whoever else  were not punk, they did not comment on political or other music-nonrelated subjects, they did not have any bright image, and they had talent. At their time they were more popular than greenday now.  They attracted fans by their music not because they are so hot or cool, they dint even have mtv or kroq  to promote them.  Grammy should be renamed into sucking band award. This far it has only been awarded to bands that suck. eminem? britney spears? greenday? deserve to be awarded? with a good beating, yes

Btw, you may bash any other pop punk band here if you want

They are pretty crap aren't they.  But they're on a major label with a BIG PR budget, so of course they're going to be on commerical radio and TV.

It is the same old sh1t on those stations/TV shows...full of regurgitated pap.  Glad to hear you found prog, I'm sure (in a few years time) you'll be the envy of your friends for listening to good music.

The first greenday album "dookie"(i think) isnt that bad, pop isnt a four letter word . You shouldnt hold peoples tastes against them though, just embrace it. That beign said, welcome! If you like those bands youll love it here.

Perhaps you should consider teaching your daughter about real music, and thereby breaking the cycle(parents with crappy music taste have kids who likes crappy music, who have kids...) before it's too late.

Poxx,I have tried and tried and tried to introduce her to some good music. She is exposed to so much prog it's not funny. She just doesn't like it.I did get her into the Beatles though.BTW,Are you insinuating I have crappy taste in music?I like Yes,Genesis,ELP,KC,Rush,Spock's Beard,Neal Morse,The Flower Kings..etc.That's crappy music???????

That's okay. Most younger kids are into simpler and lighter music. Usually that music isnt good at all, but that's just how it goes. Another problem is than nobody wants to promote the good music, what is promoted is the bad music. The tremendous amount of all this pop-punk merchandise just freaks me out

If you succeeded getting her into Beatles, try Creedence Clearwater Revival(might seem strange, but I heard some green day fans liking them)

Rolling Stones, AC/DC, and Kiss. They are not as complicated and are waaaaaaaaay easier to get into then Yes or Genesis.

If These do well, then try Zeppelin and Deep Purple(IMO, Led Zep is the greatest band of all time ) Starting with prog is easier with most "poplike" bands, like Asia or late Genesis.

Their early stuff isn't all that bad, it's just when their most recent album came out, everybody started to say that they liked Green Day form the beginning, when I bought Dookie and Nimrod on the days that they came out (this was before I discovered Prog Rock).

I like all of green days work. It's simple yes, but its catchy and energetic. Billy Joe is an excellent lyricist, and the rthymn section is pretty decent if you listen without a critical mind (which i fear is near impossible for prog fans)

Different strokes for different folks. It doesn't have to be complex or musically adventerous for me to enjoy it. just my 2 cents.

Oh, how the pressure from society's view's of what is trendy and what is not, must be hard on her. I suppose it would only be unnatural for a 14 year old girl to appreciate something like Spock's Beard. Don't give up on her.

In my previous post, I purposedly pointed out that you would be capable of teaching her about real music, and didn't make it clear that you were excluded from the "cycle". How provocative I am . From that little list, I'd say the "cycle" doesn't apply to you.

I'm one of those who feels that being a hardcore prog lover doesn't mean dismissing other more simple styles ...  Green Day are not in my Top 200 or so artists and I do think about 2/3 of what I've heard is lousy, but I must say that the band have their moments ... I'd certainly much rather listen to them singing When I Come Around, Warning or Time Of Your Life than hear what I consider to be bad and overblown prog (Transatlantic is the one that sticks to mind) ... oddly enough GD seem to me to be getting better with time ... I thought those multi-part songs on the most recent album American Idiot weren't bad ...

Green Day writes good pop-rock, it's not meant to be challenging or progressive, but as entertaining to as many people as possible. Their sound is exactly what they want it to be, therefore they are very good at what they do.

I'm 17 at present and I can safely say that I really do not like Green Day at all. I see no reason why I should listen to a track called 'Geek Stink Breath' over something called 'Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers', for example- even the title of your average prog song is more challenging and innovative than Green Day's whole back catalogue, in my opinion.

However, it's unfair for me to single out Green Day alone; although I like most old school, 70s punk/garage rock, the modern punk/indie bands leave me cold and show no real innovation- everyone seems to rip off The Buzzcocks, The Sex Pistols, XTC, Gang Of Four or Joy Division now, without adding anything new to the original blueprint.

I think in fact, salmacis, that Billy Joe cites The Buzzcocks as one of his influences!

Quit the caffeine

I actually quite like their songs; they're DEFINITELY not as bad as Simple Plan. I've a sneaking suspicion that a wealthy amount of people who "hate" Greenday are teenagers who spend all of their time trying to be an "anti-conformist."

I love how VH1 and MTV start plugging American Idiot as the first "punk-rock opera". It's disgusting, it really is. They are terrible, they have no musical talent, they are uglier than Steve Howe after he's been run through a meat slicer, but for some reason, people buy this sh*t!

I don't like them or hate them. I do like a few songs though, the classics that most people like, and a few from American Idiot. Like Boulevard, American Idiot, and Holiday.

However, deff. not something I would go out and buy. Even though Green Day is pop/punk they are WAY better than good charlotte, and simple plan, and that s**t. What's the other one? Oh bowling for soup.

And the main singer is creppy looking.

My girlfriend daughter is 13 but she has a pretty independent mind and doesn't care what the popular kids are listening to or if it's on MTV or not.  She used to like Green Day, but now prefers stuff like Damnation by Opeth and Symphony X.

Kids prefer rap and hiphop, and according to her and her friend kids today actually think rock music is boring and is what old people listen to.  Interesting that you mentioned kids prefer lighter music these days.  I guess teens just aren't cool anymore

Another problem is that kids just can't take any song lasting over 5 minutes, no patience whatsoever, and that's a big hurdle to overcome to get them into prog.

I'll probably be laughed at for this, but my first "band" was in fact Green Day. To this day I listen to all prog rock, prog-metal, and....Green Day. I can't really explain my fascination with them, though. Sentimental value, perhaps? I do believe that "American Idiot" is a 5-star CD, but in the world of punk, as opposed to the world of prog, which it could barely garner 2 stars. I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. Being a teenager, I do like to listen to the occasional music that I can easily relate to. And i WAS into Green Day before they hit super-stardom recently, and though I don't exactly embrace their newfound position, I still support them 100% and am actually attending my 3rd concert of theirs in September. Every now and then, I find Green Day to be a nice change from prog, the complete oppostie in most ways (altough American Idiot does contain two 9 minute "epics" with 5 sub-sections each ). And as far as Billiie Joe goes, well I love the guy. If you ever have seen him in concert, he's not the big a dude, rather short and skinny actually (like me!) and he has so much freakin' energy that it is near impossible not to have a good time, and I really enjoy that quality in a performer; again, something you will rarely ever get in prog rock concerts nowadays.

So, yeah, I'm a fan, but a proggie at heart I remain

I've never heard of Green Day. If MTV awards them it just means the music industry considers them fashionable enough to make some money out of them. MTV is about fashion and submission, not music. Please, ignore them.

I really hope the whole music industry falls apart (including MTV and the likes). Modern Technology makes that management layer completely obsolete. Let people decide for themselves about what music they want to buy.

I remember Dookie being one of the first albums I bought, used by the way, and I found it an extremely catchy and fun album.  Just no-nonsense catchy college rock.  Nowadays, I find them UNBEARABLE.  The singles off of American Idiot make me sick, that stupid "Time of Your Life" song is vomit-inducing, and I heard their album Warning and it put me to sleep.  They suck these days, but that doesn't change my opinion of Dookie as a fun album, probably the best example of that particular kind of mid-90s alt-punk (Offspring, etc. etc.).

I hate Green Day for a few main reasons.

1) They are extremely unoriginal.  They sound like almost every other power pop band out there.
2) They are sell outs.  Even before American Idiot, they purposely made music to appeal to the masses rather than music they enjoyed making.
3) Their music is boring, uninspiring, and most importantly, horrible.
4) They can't write lyrics for thier lives.  Seriously.
5) They wear makeup for Christ's sake.

Still, they are still a few steps higher on the sh*t skale than Slipknot and stuff like that.

Eh. They have good songs, but they are just a very generic average band. bluesaga's points are well taken, plus they're snotty and annoying. But eh. Who cares.

You can tell when a band are sellouts when...

They have action figures

That money bag in billie joe's hand is very appropriate though

That would be pretty sweet if they made Prog icon action figures.

Actually, it wouldn't, but I'd still probably buy them all anyway.

I would like to take this oppprtunity to bash Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Blink-182. I don't mind Green Day though, I grew up in the 90s so I listened to that stuff all the time back then, back in the good ol' days, when people didn't care and everyone was stupid! I don't like this decade because of all the preps and "close-minded f***s"(sorry to quote Eminem, but it's one of the most perfect lyrics I've ever heard and my life is largely influenced by pop culture, even though I hate most of it). This decade only brings a bunch of good stuff from Porcupine Tree and Our Lady Peace and some others. I'll even go so far as to say that I like the song Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day, that's probably because it's nine minutes long and there's a bunch of good stuff in it and it sounds right 90s-ish and reminds me of when I was younger. Plus some of my friends enjoy it. Also Slipknot is just pure trash. And all those stuid bands clogging airwaves with their pointless remixes and copyrighted material they ripped off completely, and only made a few minor changes.

I used to like Green Day.  But that was when I accepted what the media put in front of me.  Now I can clearly see how mediocre they are.

But now that you brought it up:

Prog > Life > Crap > Green Day > "Gangster" Rap > Power Pop (basically all Emo and "Punk-pop" which really doesn't make sense since pop and punk are opposites) > Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Insane Clown Posse and stuff like that.

So I mean, they are nothing special, but unfortunately there are worse.  The sad thing is, a lot of these bands are extremely rich yet have little talent.  Just makes me think.

BUT I THINK MAYBE THEY CHANGED A CLASSIC STYLE OF PUNK... AND A LOT OF PEOPLE LOVES THEM..

FOR ME THEY´RE NOT A BAD BAND...

I agree 100%!

Most of my friends think, that stuff would be good...
I can't understand it.
In my opinion It doesn't have any substance and every song sounds the same way...

The funniest (or oddest) thing is that I have a friend who likes Gentle Giant but also listens to Green Day.

I really don't like Green Day (same thing with The Offspring or any other "fun-punk", a style invented by MTV).

Some people may think the whole younger generation listens to such stuff like Green Day, but they are wrong.
Me for example, I listen to Gentle Giant, ELP and Yes and I'm born in 1989.

Though I have to confess that most of the music today has no good quality.

So to my generation: Let's change it!
