Quote “I started writing with Mikael [Åkerfeldt] last month, finally. It’s still in the very early days. We wrote about 15 minutes of music last month in my studio near London and we’re very excited about it. I think people are going to be very surprised by the direction. If they’re expecting some kind of death-metal-progressive rock, they’re going to be surprised [because] it’s not like that,” Wilson continues.

“If you put the two of us together, the last thing we’re going to do is something similar to what people already know from our most high profile project. It’s very arty, very ambitious; it’s going to be epic. We’re still writing. [It’s going to be] very dark, very twisted, very experimental. It’s still rock music, but we’re trying to do something really, really special and really different with this.”

They got a long way to go yet considering they only wrote 15 minutes worth of music so far.

Get busy, guys!

I dunno.  I'm always hesitant with rock supergroups.
But the way it's described makes me interested.  The description sounds almost like a Kayo Dot album.

I can't wait to hear this, but at the other side I'd like if Dan Swano and Akerfeldt were joined the forces for Sörskogen. That would be surely great. But nevertheless, this will be good.

I wonder if they will have a name as a band or they will simply be "Wilson-Akerfeldt-Portnoy"...

Yeah, definitely interesting combination and worth checking out mostly because of Åkerfeldts presence. I've always been sceptic when it comes to these supergroups, no matter how great names there are involvedErmm. So far I have found no more than "pretty good" albums by these concepts. Transatlantic is an exception though! I hope there will be whole lot of acoustic stuff  like Opeth did on Damnation.

Very tantalizing to say the least...could be amazing, could be snoozy. Portnoy is such a set element in prog now, you know it will be solid but I prefer jazzier drummers. Still, considering the "Heart of Winter" it's clear Akerfeldt is itching for something very different from Opeth for a little bit. Which should re-energize Opeth's sound too.

I highly disagree with you, though I do believe it would be best if Mikael sang lead and Wilson sang harmonies/some songs... Portnoy would add a very cool straight-rock sound to both Wilson and Akerfeldt.  This sounds very interesting and has a lot of positive potential! Wink

I think Portnoy could ruin this project. Even though not in the running, Danny Carey would prove much more interesting from a drumming perspective.

All they need is Maruisz Duda on bass and you have an amazing supergroup.

Lead Guitar and Vocals - Akerfeldt
Guitar, Keys, Vocals - Wilson
Bass, vocals - Duda
Drums - Portnoy

Salivating now.

I am wondering what kind of music they will play...Ermm
A millionth uninspired prog metal album or something blending pop, space-rock, post-rock, extreme metal and some electronica ?
Mr Duda proved he can go beyond the boundaries of prog with lunatic soul...

Uh, imagine that! I guess this line-up would be way successful than for an example Transatlantic, although I don't wanna underestimate Roine, Neal and Pete (didn't mention Portnoy, as we have him involved in this one), but having Akerfeldt, Wilson, Duda and Portnoy in the same band = a real blast.

What half of the people on this site were you on again?

Anyway, this idea sounds good. I can't say I'm a fan of DT, though I'm not familiar with Portnoy, but a project with such big names will at least be interesting. Therefore I'm quite excited to see the result.

Yeah, they've been talking (when asked about it) for a long time always complaining that there just isn't any time to tackle the project. Now that Opeth's on a break and I guess PT too, this is the first time that they actually do something about it. But let's not hold our breaths.

I'm just as interested in the Åkerfeldt solo album which is going to be very acoustic and quite Nick Drake-like.

Nightshine: anyone with even a third of a brain knows that Dream Theater is a fairly good band. They've written some great songs in the past, write some good ones now. Sure, they've had their flops and some abysmal things. But like them or not, badmouthing them like you are twelve and want to rebel against what your parents listen to makes you sound, well, like you're twelve. It's fine not to like them. It's fine to abhor them. But acting like you've got the inside scoop on all us sheep who don't instantly light on fire any form of Dream Theater product... Well, write some reviews of bands that you enjoy and we can tear apart your opinions. Wink

I gladly invite you to tear apart my opinions word by word.  However, it wouldn't matter considering the layout is dedicated to collaborators and collaborators only, so reviewing here would be much like dumping a message in a bottle out into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and 99999+ other bottles lie there with them.

So you find your opinion to be invalidated because lots of other people also have opinions? That's the opposite impression of what you gave with your above comments.

It's not about taking the ratings down from a 4.0 to a 2.0. No one has that kind of power--even collabs are only slightly more weighted. Really, the important part is the review. Show which albums you support, which you don't care for. Don't use a perceived lack of effectiveness as a reason not to even try.

Well, yes, there is that. And I'm not a big fan, either. It gets really long on the left on a few. But all the reviews from everyone exist still, despite some being bumped off by newer ones.

How about this: quit claiming victim status, write a bunch of well-thought-out, quality reviews and you can attain collab status. Heck, I become a prog reviewer while still sounding something like a moron.

Generally, you must review at least 30 albums/live material etc. This is only a base, and obviously you should review more. The more accomplished and varied your reviews are, the more likely you will get an invite.

Posted By: LiquidEternity
Date Posted: May 26 2010 at 17:01
I reviewed about 100-150 things and then thought, "Huh, I want to edit some of these. Let's see if I can manage to advance!" And it just kinda went through. Some people really have to grovel for it, though. Or you can pay an existing prog reviewer to put a good word in for you. Wink

Looking at your review, it's a fantastic one. If you have plenty of spare time to put in to reviewing albums, you would make a splendid addition to the collaborator ranks.

I think I must be the only guy on PA who is a big fan of PT, DT, and Opeth, so I eagerly await this release. My choice for lineup?

Akerfeldt: Lead vocals (on some tracks) and lead guitar
Wilson: Lead vocals ( on some tracks) , rhythm guitar and keyboards
Portnoy: Drums and backing vocals

I like all three, thought I don't really love any of them at the moment. My choice:

Akerfeldt: drum programming and artwork
Wilson: synthesizers, programming
Portnoy: autotuned vocals

Yep. I hope they form a progressive techno outfit.
