Godfather, even when he N° 3 was sub par, the first two are so extremely good that pay for it all.

More in line with the poll choices (I think the Three Colours trilogy excellent, but it's a different kind of trilogy, not a serial, so wouldn't expect it on the list) would be Omen 1, 2, and 3 (there was a fourth made later for TV but wouldn't count that).  And I love the first three Planet of the Apes movies (but since there were five in the series I wouldn't include it as a trilogy).

The Evil Dead trilogy is pretty awesome IMO, especially once they started really mixing in the slapstick humor.  I suppose they'll get my vote.  They're probably not my favorite trilogy overall but I'll use this opportunity to maybe let a few people know about them. Tongue

The Matrix trilogy is genius, though some parts are boredom.

The whole Star Wars saga is probably my favorite, but if I had to choose between the original and the prequel trilogy, due to nostalgic reasons I have to go with the prequel. I saw both Star Wars Episode I & III in the cinema the day they came out, I was blown-away.

I loved the books (especially as a kid), but was very disappointed with the film adaptation (prefer what Bakshi did).  Heck, I'd take Jackson's Bad Taste and Braindead over that.  I was very impressed with Heavenly Creatures.

I think that the Three Colours trilogy is in a different league of artistry.

I haven't seen those yet, but I see they have a lot of high marks.  I really enjoyed Kieslowski's Decalogue, so I'd probably like the Three Colours as well.  (Yes, I am a 15-year-old who watches foreign art films.Geek)

Very cool Josh.  Any 15 yo into the Decalogue is thumbs up in my book.  Took me twice that long to find it.  Just make sure to watch them in that order, B/W/R.  While not critical, there are little things he throws in that rely on the order.

Also check out La Double Vie someday.  Smile

This is a pretty solid option.
The Godfather trilogy is 2/3 brilliant but I'm feeling a pull towards comedy right now, and seeing as how there are FOUR Vacation movies, I think I'll go with:
the Naked Gun trilogy

I hate La Double Vie de Véronique intensely, while Blue I just hated (but more than enough to skip Blanc and Rouge, so I haven't seen them)

LOTR, because, like the books, it is really a single story and was filmed as a continuous work. Most trilogies have a successful start and then the 2nd two are added...to mixed effect.

Have to go with LOTR.  Most anticipated movie in my life.  Jackson did what no Hollywood Director could do without ruining the story completely.  The Bashki's cartoons were too rushed and really blow.  I fall asleep at the same point every time I have tried. I really was looking forward to them too.

El Mariachi
Desperado
Once Upon A Time In Mexico.

not even LOTR includes a cooking lesson in the DVD extras......

LOTR is probably the best (and the most faithful film (to the book) out there, most really miss the entire point of the novel)

talking of that, I struggle to watch the Bourne films, because they dumbed the story down so much. an entire subplot and explanation completely mangled. essentially theres only 3 things that the film got right , his "name" is "Jason Bourne" (well its true for a bit), he has amnesia, there is a secret organisation called treadstone. all the rest is completely made up.

and Die Hard isnt a trilogy, remember there was 4.0, with a completely unrealistic representation about the internet and power of computers.....  (films are bad regarding the portrayal of technology)

No Jay, you are not old because those, both are my favorite films of all time... but I voted for BTTF because they are out of votes right now... I know Marty agrees with me in this one...

Actually I found Bourne Identity as a solid effort with no weak points but can't stand a chance with The Lord of the Rings and Back to The Future... also the first two Spidermans are quite decent a better than most any comic book based movies but the third one was a total failure... the worst Venom in history...

Special mention to Matrix... solid but with some holes in between that makes them not a flawless... but yeah... Marty Mcfly rules... the one in the movie, the one in the site...

The Terminator movies deserve a mention, though the third wasn't the best and I haven't seen the new one.

I like The Man With No Name movies as well.  I was just thinking about watching one of them soon.

I HAVE to say Lord of the Rings, of course, but Back to the Future deserves some attention as well.

For me it has to be Park Chan-Wooks Vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance). OK, so they're linked by theme rather than story but they still beat all other trilogies that I've seen.

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

Well, when the first three films are lauded as untouchable master works by the sentimental fanboys, it's pretty impossible to get them to admit that other films even exist.

The fact that Return of the Jedi is one of the cheesiest, most implausible films in the whole saga always seems to slip by those particular people.

I'd like to mention Pirates of the Caribbean. Admittedly, I don't really know how it ranks among movies in general, not having seen most of the moveis here and not really being much of a fan of modern cinema. But I love how the series was surprisingly fluid - always entertaining and full of eye-candy for those who go to movies for the special effects and action scenes (which does not include me =D), yet with characters whose motivations were varied and who made and broke alliances at a whim in order to achiever their own ends. Surprisingly complex and non-standard. Also full of medieval greatness and fun fantasy.

Oh yeah, and although I'm not huge on action scenes, I'll take a sword fight over a gun fight any day. So that didn't hurt.

More like the fact that ALL SIX STAR WARS MOVIES are some of the cheesiest, most implausible films in film history always seems to slip by their fans. [/BITCHRANT]

Yes, but I can enjoy them on their own merits. What gets me all the time, however, is how many people seem to be under the delusion that the second trilogy is any worse than the first. All the films have very poor dialogue, all the films have childish humor, all the films have continuity errors out the ears. RotJ just happens to be the pinnacle of everything bad about Star Wars. It has the most annoying comic relief character in the Ewok (much more irritating than the Gungan, I say), poor, rushed pacing, error after logical error in this supposed 'grand empire''s defenses and tactics, and the most drawn-out, ridiculous final battle I may have ever seen on the screen. Teddy bears stoning to death military men in armor? Give me a break.

The one thing that may truly differentiate the two trilogies is the special effects department. The prequels have effects that look much more convincing to me. Now, Yoda actually shows emotion and 'acts' with believability. Do people who hold the first trilogy up so high honestly think a stiff, expressionless rubber muppet looks better? No, no, no . . . there is something wrong with the whole picture. All the films are equally ridiculous, but I still love them. I choose to love them despite their flaws, but let's not pretend they were the greatest films in cinema history; they simply weren't.

Now I'm all riled up, again. Maybe I'll go start a separate f**king topic about it! LOL
