Topic: Lady GaGa's "Telephone"Posted By: Henry Plainview
Subject: Lady GaGa's "Telephone"
Date Posted: March 25 2010 at 01:44
Lady GaGa's latest music video, which is really more of a short film, is quite bizarre. It's also one of the most explicitly PG-13 things on Youtube, with a nearly naked GaGa, brief profanity, and LESBIANS.
The 'Ga claims to be bisexual, so the LESBIANS shouldn't surprise anybody, but we are still left with one of the strangest music videos I've ever seen from a major label. So I ask you, what does it mean?
The first options are based on http://vigilantcitizen.com/?p=3423 - this blog post , and I admit that the main reason I made this thread was to share this link. He has http://vigilantcitizen.com/?p=1676 - a http://vigilantcitizen.com/?p=2614 - whole http://vigilantcitizen.com/?p=2737 - series of these things, and they're all fantastic, as is the whole blog. But you all know how I feel about crazy people, so you may not agree.
The second set is based on an essay question somebody on another forum got in his Music and Gender class
Lady Gaga's music and image has been influenced by the likes of David Bowie, Fred Mercury from Queen, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Gwen Stefani. In her latest video set to the music "Telephone," Lady Gaga along with Beyonce presents an array of images of androgyny and hyper femininity in her narrative that begins with doing time in a women's prison. In this video that refers to the film Thelma and Louise, Lady Gaga weaves a tale of poisoning Beyonce's repulsive boyfriend as well as the other patrons of the restaurant, and then proceeds to drive off in the sunset with Beyonce.
For your paper, discuss some of the details of popular culture that the video is incorporating and argue what does Lady Gaga's pastiche of popular culture do for her audience. (Britney Spear's video of "One More Time" for example). How does her audience understand these controversial images that border on the obscene? What is the significance of including Beyonce in the music video? In your opinion, is Lady Gaga a feminist in her surreal play of images that involve lesbianism in her music video? Or is re-inscribing misogynistic views of women?
The last set is obvious.
Personally, I'm fairly certain that it doesn't really mean anything, at least in the sense of subverting stereotypes to advance the cause of feminism blah blah blah; however, I do think that at least some of the things our Vigilant Citizen is talking about are intentional. Ga has this weird ironic thing going on with her popularity that is very annoying, but commenting on mass media seems to be something she does quite frequently, even while indulging in the very things she pretends to dislike. And strange occult imagery has resonating power, so I imagine some of that that is deliberate as well.
Also, http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Music/03/24/lady.gaga.billion.video/index.html?hpt=C2 - The Blonde Lady has a total of over 1 billion views on Youtube. Fame can buy you a lot of things!
Also, this is the very first thread about Lady GaGa on PA, so I bet it's going to be great. If you don't post in this thread, you can't complain about repeat topics!

Henry, you have far too much free time.
Also, Post-Feminism, because that's the kind of psuedo-intellectual bullsh*t that keeps people on their toes. Or it is just drivel.

I'm not even sure what post-feminism means, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-feminism#Post-feminism - there's a Wikipedia article for it!
While I skipped ahead at times, I do recommend watching at least part of it. Is this what pop music is becoming? Should we be concerned about that? There's always been http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsCXZczTQXo - very strange thematic choices (I've watched that video 10-20 times and I'm still not sure what's going on), but this seems to be taking things to a new level.
Also, I should be clear: the metaphor I am referring to is the (perceived) unthinking, passive nature of pop culture/mass media. So GaGa is talking about about Americans being hypnotized, not being hypnotized herself. This is not to insult anyone, but I've found that things that are obvious in my head aren't always clear to everybody else.

Post-Feminism, you don't need to know the specifics of what it means, just the fact that it refutes some feminist claims, while pushing others. In other words, nothing that vanilla Feminism can't describe in a more succint manor.
I've seen the video on a music TV channel, I was too apathetic to watch the whole thing. At least it's not deadly dull.

I'd vote for options 5 & 7 combined. I was also perplexed when I first saw it.
Too bad the music is awful. I mean, is this really the new Thriller? Thriller was a nice track that I liked even without the video. Same goes for a lot of successful pop before the last era of commercialism that started in the mid 90s.

That essay question is crap that's just a prof. reading into pop culture, a necessarily mindless entity, with pathetic intelli-speak.
The song is less than 4 minutes long, and they repeated it a lot in the video. It had good parts, and it's pretty catchy. I felt like the video was trying too hard and ended up being kind of dumb. The thing is, I like GaGa's whole attitude and persona. She reminds me of a mix of characters from the Fifth Element and Blade Runner time traveling back to us to troll everyone.

Well, I have consistently come out in defense of Lady Gaga's music, which I think is remarkably good pop,a dn I think this is a remarkably good video. There's a lot of controversy about it being offensive, but I think that is a bit silly. It's no more offensive than anything else out there. Should kids be watching it? No. But kids see lots of things they shouldn't and I think the impact on their fragile little minds is overstated.
What does it mean? Nothing, I think. It's eye candy and ear candy, with a Tarantino sensibility. Why does everything have to mean something?

Me too. Still voted 'boobs' because I'm shallow.
But on a more serious note, I agree that for a pop artist she is fairly good, not to mention the fact that she writes her own songs, which is a plus in my book. However, I find the video a bit too ostentatious. One can make a point in a different way. I understand she is eccentric and an artist but the line between eccentric art and poor taste is very thin. I don't agree with the mentality: if everybody else does it, why shouldn't I do it?

On a side note, why is her vagoo cencored in this video? I only noticed it was uncovered due to the pixels and why the hell she had to show it if it would be cencored anyway? God, I sure hate that controversythat is not controverted culture that Madonna invented in the 80s.

Thriller is a good comparison, I hadn't even thought of that, but Telephone is even stranger because the video seems to be unconnected to the lyrics, except for the weird mind control thing. And to be honest, I would rather watch Telephone than Thriller or Radio Ga Ga. I would say that "objectively" it is no more or less awful than pop music from any other period, but at least it's my kind of awful.

If you don't see the problem with a celebrity showing her vagina in a music video I don't know what to say. The reason she did it at all was because of the widespread rumors she's a hermaphrodite.

I rarely like music videos. Not even in prog metal or prog (I actually hate them). But what can I say, pop beats the crap out of other genres in their videos... And this one is entertaining. I don't think it means sh*t (with some exceptions like the declaration of estrogenism by La Germanotta) but it's kind of fun. The music is Pop. Don't come to a Lady Gaga video/song expecting key modulation, atonal harmonies or lightining-fast guitar solos.

I just watched the whole video. It's hilarious. I started laughing at the the third second. Lady Gaga is the master of parody, topping Shakira (who MUST be 100% comedy, I can't explain her videos and her songs in another way).
It looks like a "women in prison" flick, with a near-porn flavor, no class, only cliches for straight men who would have never met a lesbian or a bisexual woman in their life. Somewhere between "Oz", a bad-taste cartoon for "adults" and a poor take on John Waters' movies (without the humor and the intelligence), this video is not the "Thriller" of the 10's. If you think so, you also think that Green Day is better than the Clash.
And the music is barely average. Without her cosplay thing and her fame-celebrity-glamour-identity-blablabla so-called "intellectual" gibberish (Residents, anyone?), Lady Gaga would stay under the radar, drown in the sea of the everyday pop/dance mainstream. And if I want a singer who writes her own music, I listen to Melody Gardot or Android Lust.

What, people look worse without makeup and in bad light that was probably photoshopped!? WHAT ON EARTH IS THIS? Are you telling me that the presentation of women in the media is not realistic?
Assume this thread will be closed soon, which is more than fine by me. Awful, vile, creature.
Are you saying that you're trying to get my thread locked?

That's very clearly flesh toned panties, thinking that's a dick is really dumb. Which is why it's on Youtube without even an age gate. And, of course, there's the fact that she and everybody who knows her has said IT IS NOT TRUE.
Presactly.

Yeah, still not buying it. I heard the same rumors about Gwen Stefani when No Doubt was big. For some reason people feel the need to tear down pretty and successful women. (Oh no, I sounded like a feminist just then!)

Actually, the rumors started when she twitered that she was going to masturbate her hermy dick after a show on Europe.
She made some weak attempts to clarify the story, but nothing really convincing yet, so I'm staying with her first testimony.
GO INTERNET DETECTIVES, GO!

Yeah, because as we can see from the Telephone video (slowly reeling this back in...), Lady Gaga is clearly a person who would never do something just to screw with people!

Not trying to get this thread shut down but I would love to get Lada Gaga, and Stefani for that matter, shut down

Are you implying she is lying about the penis?

No implication, that is exactly what I'm saying. If she even tweeted that in the first place, which I doubt.

She has got a sense of humour, ya know.....
Like she plays around with the 'bi' rumours too. She wanted to do a photo shoot with a strap on, or something, for some Brit mag, but it didn't come to fruition.

Her bisexuality is not a rumor. Or maybe she's just pretending she's had sex with women to piss off Barbara Walters, I don't know. Also,

Curious enough, 100% of her songs that are actually listenable are remixes that are not done by anyone connected to her.

WATCH THIS. I am 100% positive you won't regret it. Let's also pause for a moment to reflect on how unf**kingbelievably bored they must have been to do that. The synchronization is perfect!

Now that is really something interesting. A more suitable candidate for the "Thriller of our times".
