Hey hey hey hey! Well, I've been checking PA for quite some time and thought: 'oh, what the flute! I guess I could register!' I absolutely love the format and how there are specialists and a team for every sub-genre; guess this could be a great place of refuge from the outside world where you'd get questions like: 'what's a king crimson?' I guess some of you are already familiar with that story.
So thank you for having this young proghead! ^__^ Looking foreward to posting!

Welcome and make yourself right at home. If you got any questions to how the site works ( suggesting artists and so forth) do feel free to contact any collaborator ( the ones with the four or five star status) and they will lead you towards the person who can answer those questions.

Welcome, folks are pretty friendly here. Fairly quickly after signing up I posted a "Give me some suggestions..this is what I like already" type of thread and got some great ideas. It was a good intro to the forums.
And this site will magically turn all of your money into music.
------------- You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

That question was bad enough, then I started telling people about Zeuhl. Imagine the strange looks from that one. Anyway, welcome to the site!

Thank you kindly for the warm welcome! If I need recommendations or just clarifications, I'll know who to turn to! :D
@ Jon - Cow and Chicken is awesome! I Am Weasel is even better! ;) ... ahaha... boy, is my face red?! @ Walter - haha! But answering to another person what a king crimson is, is rather easy. Observe: after the question hits you harder than a hammer (this usually happens the first time, but you soon get used to it) you roll your eyes in a very arrogant manner. By this time you had already caught the attention of the blasphemer. ;) After that you take the mp3/mp4/i-Pod etc out, you hand in the earbuds (still with the arrogant look in the eyes) and apathetically say: this! The reaction is usually priceless! @ aginor - Well, I think my all time favourite band is Queen, because I've been a fan and collector for almost 10 years now. A very very close second is Tull - I'll try to avoid mentioning them in every single post. :D Then of course, the usual suspects: Yes, Genesis, Magma, Nektar, Camel, Caravan etc. However my favourite sub-genre is prog folk, which includes Comus, Spirogyra, Mellow Candle, Trees and so on. At the moment I am rather infatuated with Magma, and Wurdah Itah is first on my 'to do' list. Hopefully I'll find some time, because I have a very good feeling about it!

Favourite albums... let's see: Tull's so called 'folk trilogy' - SFTW, Heavy Horses and Stormwatch, TAAB (of course), Queen II, Magma's MDK and KA, The Yes Album, Close to the Edge, First Utternace, Bells, Boots and Shambles by Spiro. I have recently discovered Steeleye Span's Below the Salt and Commoner;s Crown which I enjoy very much. And many many more!

What do you weidos see in First Utterance? .
No offense intended, m'lady.
I would have highlighted Sprirogyra too as that's one of my favourite albums -- that and Comus are my traditional acid folk band faves.
As for First Utterance, it mesmerized me. I like haunting music such as "The Herald" (truly a beautiful piece) and creepy, paganesque music (and I love acid folk). "Drip, Drip" lyrically grosses me out, but.... I find the album has very good contrast and is nicely nuanced (I do like rather dark music and themes commonly) It would be kind of like asking what makes The Wicker Man (the 1973 version) one of my favourite films. I'm actually interested in the occult and paganism, so thematically that becomes a plus, but I really like the music as well.

I love the whole album -- amazing album (one of the best of the best for me). "The Bite" really does make me think of that "Wicker Man" Scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEOQqnHMSMc - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEOQqnHMSMc
Incidentally, since I love Magma, you should hear the Retrospektiw 1-2 version of MDK if you haven't. And this is such a classic.

But that particular case was weird because she thought First Utterance was cool and not scary at all, yet 'Hortz Fur Dëhn Stekëhn West' was 'oh, that's freaking me out, man!' - and not with the hippy meaning! Maybe she was intimidated by the use of Kobaïan.

Dziękuję (I am a native of Poland) is more appropriate (anyone remember 'Dziekuje Poland live '83' that should create unanimity among progheads - it was released by a musician who is here in "progressive electronic").

Okay, don't laugh. But Power has a very high sentimental meaning for me, as it was the first rock album I started listening from my personal initiative. Of course there is Leftoverture, Point of Know Return and even Vinyl Confessions (John has such beautiful vocals, and there are also 3 track with Rrrroger Taylor on backing vocals! Yum!); but as I said Power means a lot to me. It's one of those things that change your life. :P

Now for the truly important business: favorite Kansas album?
Okay, don't laugh. But Power has a very high sentimental meaning for me, as it was the first rock album I started listening from my personal initiative. Of course there is Leftoverture, Point of Know Return and even Vinyl Confessions (John has such beautiful vocals, and there are also 3 track with Rrrroger Taylor on backing vocals! Yum!); but as I said Power means a lot to me. It's one of those things that change your life. :P
My favorite album from Kansas isn't that highly regarded either: Somewhere to Elsewhere. That's my second favorite album of all time.
My first is Tales from Topographic Oceans- greatest album ever made.

Yes, it's a GOOD album (I don't judge music by its level of "progressiveness"), lots of great melodies. "We're not alone anymore" features a monstruous solo by the other Steve. So you are probably aware of the band Streets ?

The highest is 10, you can sort threads by number of replies. This one is getting close to the top though.

Great call, and I have to say I think "Taking in the View" is a better song than "Dust in the Wind."

Haha! Thanks! I think the title of the thread was appealing as you don't get that everyday on PA. and they don't even teach us manipulation techniques at Political Science. Anyhow... I am here to learn! And by golly! there's quite a lot to learn!

There is. I've learned more about interesting music to listen to from this site in a day than I had in a year or more before I found it.

I heard of them, but never got to listen anything by them yet. I guess that thanks to Power I became a huge Steve Morse fan. He's on my top 5 guitarists list.

I knew that would be brought up eventually.

OK, I suppose that, as one of the site's few females, it's now my turn to welcome our new gal! I'm at work now, the connection is the worst I've experienced in the past few years, and don't have a lot of time... Anyway, a very warm welcome to Lizzy, and a word of warning to her: after hanging around this site for a while, you could find yourself married and moved to another country. This is what happened to me, at least - not that I complain!

Yes, I discovered that there is prog in death metal, in hardcore, in electronica and maybe next in hip hop (well, candiria is halfway between hardcore and hip hop and they are in PA).

Woohoo! Thank you, Raff! Nice, but my heart belongs to Rrrroger Taylor or Ian Anderson (or both). But hey, I guess I could move to Britain.

Hi Lizzy! Welcome to the site. You're lucky, I've never seen "Welcome newbies" thread that got five pages in a day
Cool to see you enjoy Magma, one of the greatest bands here, in my opinion, but you have lots to discover.
And lots of money to loose, expect that

yes, indeed, prog albums are VERY expensive (which is not always justified) that's why I rarely buy any, unless I can find used copies at a reasonable price.

And when you're looking for the real rarities, the LPs can cost a fortune (but they also commonly increase in value). Thanks to a flood, I lost a fortune in LPs. I don't like CDs much but appreciate the convenience of mp3s and the like.

I've gotten that reaction from everyone I've linked them to outside these forums, basically.
People that I introduce Magma to start thinking I am into some sort of a cult or something (they later caught me listening to Yes' Ritual.... and now they are convinced...) .... but if you really want to scare people just play Dun's Eros (amazing Zehul album...my favorite) and before the second note you can see fear in people's eyes .
Anyways... welcome!!!!
obligatory question: what do you think about ELP?
it is always nice to "meet" young prog fans such as myself (no offense to older prog veterans )... ...and a girl that enjoys Magma, Tull, Yes and Kansas... now this is rare!!!

But of course. Here we have one female prog fan who admits to revelling in the art of Zeuhl - a variety of progressive music about as attractive to the average woman as "The Bold and the Beautiful" is to the average guy.
A natural consequence is that the guys will start circling. Kinda like a flock of starved vultures suddenly coming across a possible meal just about big enough for one of them ;-)
