I bet we've ALL got 'em, buried deep in our boxes and such, old tapes of us playing from years past that either elicit much cringing or bring a smile to our faces or both, in addition to bringing on uncontrollable laughter in some cases. So, this here thread is for those who've unearthed these long and almost-forgotten gems, describe your finds and experiences here in revisiting your distant and maybe no-so-distant past, if you dare!   I'll lead off with one: While I was on vacation on So Cal this past week, my bass playing buddy who I stayed with found a cassette in his garage of me, him and a drummer dating back to 1983. We had a guitar trio called Red Tape that did original high-energy fusion/instrumental rock stuff. Man, I had a serious case of Hodlsworth-itis back then, GOOD GAWD Y'ALL! Aside from that, it was very fun revisiting that music, much of it I actually still liked, amazingly enough. My buddy Jack and I were just a couple young adrenalin-crazed hotheads who hooked up with this great drummer and managed to create some fun sonic mayhem. He's actually sending me the tape to transfer to CD and reamaster if possible. I've got a few - but seriously no prog! My favourite is one I've just dug up: From 1988: Tranceplant (formerly known as Mantas). A 5 track demo of original "technical thrash" recorded in a single day in a semi-pro studio and mixed by an engineer who had never heard thrash metal in his life before. We played him some Megadeth, Sacred Reich and Slayer to help get into it, but I don't think it worked... The fact that we'd only written the songs a few weeks prior to the session didn't help much, and they all sound totally rough, with bad drop-outs and awful bass playing (from me |

That sounds pretty cool, but luckily Im only 17 and I keep all the old stuff I did, and come back and listen (mostly cringe hehe), but nothing really older than a few years. Can't wait to come back to stuff after like 10 years, Im sure it will be quite funny. ------------- Links to musical projects coming soon!!! |

I did a short tour on bass with a straight-edge hardcore punk band back in '88/'89. If you don't know, 'straight edge' means no drinking or drugs (any fans of Minor Threat here?). Luckily I was just a replacement, so the other three couldn't do much but express their disdain when the roadie and I got high. A year or so later, I ran into the guitarist; he'd gone off to college, grown his hair and discovered the Velvet Underground. Needless to say, we then proceeded to smoke ourselves silly that night...and I have tapes of our old punk shows, as well as the bizarre droning jams that he and I did once he'd seen the green light.
oops, almost forgot...my oldest recording (freshman/ sophomore year in high school) has me and a keyboardist trying a Jan Hammer-ish fusion sound. If you listen past me being out of tune and just really not a very good player, and the keyboard sounding cheesy and harsh like only a DX7 can, it actually sounds pretty amazingly horrible. ------------- http://www.last.fm/user/sollipsist/?chartstyle=kaonashi">

Or am I the only idiot who was to lazy to put labels on them? Some of them actually have labels with nothing written on them. Pretty lame, no? I pretty much record everything I play. So I've got 20 years of good stuff, lame stuff, and downright unlistenable stuff. My favorite old tapes are of a four man improvisational space rock band circa 1986. "The Craftsman". We had a vocalist who was nuts (he's now an undertaker). The stuff he came up with off the top of his head was sometimes insane, sometimes brillant. We called him "The Birdman" I swear his head was the same shape as tweetybird. "I thought I saw a Rickenbacker". My brother played keys. I remember lugging his keyboards to the studio. He had quite a rig, and would always make a convienent "Beer run" during the loadout. I was on Bass and guitar. Not at the same time of course. My buddy Bob played drums, a cross between Ringo, Watts, and Collins. Excellent timekeeper. The music isn't so great, but it has it moments. The reason I love these tapes is because they represent a time in my life when the music was fresh, and exciting. And full of possibilities. Four friends just letting it rip. I warned you about the short time it took us to record, the diabolical bass playing and the hapless engineer - but check out the lead guitarist - not at all bad!!! You guys are serious wimps with your proper songs and decent playing
and singers who can hold a note I can top it all - I have a tape somewhere of my band of 1989 playing the now demolished Baggot Inn in Dublin and covering Abba's 'Mamma Mia' at breakneck speed with twin guitars, an out of tune singer, even more out of tune harmonies (courtesy of me) a bad keyboard player and a drummer with no discernible talent for anything than collecting waistcoats of dubious hues. It's hilariously bad .... and I thought we were great and wondered why we weren't getting queues of a&r types round the block for our shows... In fact it's so embarrassing I can't even post it...

I honestly can't hear anything bad about the bass part - it's no Watchtower bassline by any stretch of the imagination but it doesn't sound out of place or anything. The sound's not terrible for a thrash demo, either, although the cymbal sounds at the beginning are a bit naff. Six months ago when I was more into oldschool thrash than recently I'd probably have dug this.

...seriously though - why not? If you write and play stuff, why not embarass yourself here? I've just dug out a tape from 1986 of a band I was in that played a kind of "FM Rock". The band was called "Under The Influence". Interestingly, the initials U.T.I. also stand for Urinary Tract Infection... Now that's embarrassing |

They're not old, but they're not exactly new either. My recorded collection consists basically of people messing around in a living room with a microphone in the middle of everyone, and the odd naff cover. Oh, and several songs taking the piss out of various things which I doubt anyone will find at all amusing  . The band I'm in at present got a live recording done last Saturday which I haven't heard yet - if that's any good I'll put a couple of tracks up (not the ones I kept cocking up on  ).

Me and four friends had a straight forward metal band called Spirit, back when I was 16. We thought we were good, but when I listen to our demo now, I understand how bad we wore. The demo containd 5 songs, two of witch was iron maiden covers. It was called Writings in the wall, and I played the guitar. You can hear me pretending to be Van Halen now and then.... The day I recorded bring Your Daughter was the first time I had ever used Floyd rose, and it shines through.

"cringe tapes" and with good reason. The most horrid of the lot dated
from 1982 or so when I and my vocalist and bassplayer were hideously
drunk, irked that the drummer had missed a recording session to
spend time with his girlfriend, and in a fit of Frank Zappa inspired
drunken wrath proceeded to castigate the poor sod in what inevitably
became known as the "Zappa-esque Drunk Tape." 90 minutes of vodka
