Hey guys, I was just wondering (for those of you who play 6-String bass) what your axe of choice is. Mine: The Ibanez SR706. Fantastic response and tone for a relatively good price. The only 6-er I have is an off-brand I got for something like $270. It's not a bad bass, but it really eats up strings fast, and for what I play anymore I don't need a 6-string, so I generally stick to my fretless 4.

I've always wanted a Fender Jazz fretless but I've never gotten around to getting one. There's nothing quite like the tone of a jazz bass, especially a fretless.

Yeah, fretless is a lot of fun. If you do ever look for one, try out the Squier VM Jazz fretless. I tried it, and ended up saving myself a lot of money, because I actually like it a lot more than the Fender. Looks the same, and IMO plays nicer.

 I'm actually more of a guitarist than bass player, and in the picture is my 7 string Ibanez RG 7421 and a Brian Moore Guitars I12000 series I sold in December. Not a 6 string bass but f**k it I'll post it anyway  The headstock got a little cut off, but yeah it's an Ibanez BTB 405 Quilt maple top with Bartolinis. It's a 2007 model, so it was made before the 08 models where Ibanez changed the BTB to facilitate better upper fret access. The 405 sounds huge and plays well. The 35 inch scale really lends itself to much more articulate and clear low B string playing than you would have on a standard 34 inch scale bass |

I had a 5-string for a while as well, but it ended up doing nothing but collecting dust, so I sold it. Kind of wishing now that I hadn't, but I used the money from it to buy my fretless, so I suppose I'm happy enough with that.

Very nice. I like these higher end Ibanez basses, especially since the necks are thin and allow better fret access, and that's pretty important in progressive metal. haha

First time I saw a 6-string bass was when I saw Clive Mitten of Twelfth Night playing one at the Target Club in Reading (when it still existed...). He was awesome (listen to TN's "Live at the Target" album!).
However, a 5-string makes more sense to me - I often want to go a bit lower than E, and when playing with drop-tuned guitarists or baritone players, there's nothing better, as you don't need to drop tune - and chords sound less muddy on a baritone than they do on a bass unless you're Lemmy and cut all the bottom end off.
In which case, you lose a lot of what I like best about bass - the earthquake effect!
Unless you string your 6-stringer as 5+1, of course... ------------- The important thing is not to stop questioning. |
