Hi everyone. Trying to rig my Casio to sound like a Mellotron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqPEjA7x-r4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqPEjA7x-r4
In the video I'm layering the Cello sound with one of the String Ensembles, but does anyone have some suggestions for how to make it sound better?
Also, sorry about the tease on Can-Utility, I haven't learned the full sequence yet =P

You are getting there! The original Mellotrons sounded cool because they were mechanical tape analog machines, so add some delay to the the sound to give it some "wobble" and take the digital edge off of it. You might experiment a bit with other guitar-based effects such as chorus to fatten up the sound. Just a touch should do it. I'm buying discs of the authentic Mellotron samples on Ebay, and I'm going to run them through my new Apple laptop with USB keyboard. I'll let you know how it works out. HAVE FUN!!

Great job!! I don't know the capabilities of that Casio model (how many layers can you play simultaneously etc), but stunningly good results could be achieved with adding an extra layer of sound which is not strings-related (french horn, even accordion) but slightly more quiet comapred to strings. Also, if you can add a light vibrato or assign the whole patch to pitch envelope (just to slightly flutter when the key is pressed) that would enrich the sound. If you have effects on board, you might add just a tiny bit of chorus or phaser, or reverb). ------------- |
