I've been around here for quite a while and built up good collection of CD's, largely thanks to this site. But I'm beginning to run out of ideas of what to get nextso I'm hoping a few people here can offer me recommendations from anything to everything, no genres to be left unturned. Now, obviously I'm asking for quite a bit here, so to help with norrowing down the choices here is a list of almost every band that I know, with the ones that I find exceptional in bold and the ones I find a waste of time in red. Obviously I highly recommend for people to follow up on the bands I've bolded, just ask away if you want to know which albums I think you should start with.

For starters, if you like Cynic and Canvas Solaris, you should get Exivious (a Cynic offshoot) and Counter-World Experience (a German band). Their latest albums, both released last year, are excellent, and should be right up your street. Then, since you mention liking both Osanna and Il Balletto di Bronzo, you could do worse than get something by Biglietto per l'Inferno and Jumbo, two great Italian bands of the Seventies with a 'heavy-prog' approach rather than a symphonic one. Finally, since it seems you're into Hatfield and the North, the next logical step would be National Health (for three-quarters the same band), and obviously Egg, a must for Dave Stewart fans. |

I'm not looking for anything specific, just good albums based on what I already like. Havnt heard anything from this year yet so I think I'll have to get the Jagga Jazzist and UZ albums.
I've yet to tryout Phideaux, probably because I stay away from heavily hyped bands these days, I've been burnt too many times. Discipline and Knifeworld are two bands that I've heard a track from and like, but the former can be difficult to find for a reasonable price and I havnt gotten around to the latter. I've heard one track from BBT and I wasnt very impressed, though I think it was from one of their earlier albums rather than the highly acclaimed new one.
I know about Exivious, another band on my "to get" that I've yet to get around to, BTW good review of that album Raff. I've looked for the BPI album before but its damned expensieve (sadly most RPI seems to come up with a cost of at least £25 on Amazon, and plenty for over £100  , or I would have a lot more than I do now). Jumbo is a new one on me so thanks, I'll look for that as well, and thanks for reminding me about NAtional Health and Egg, I'd almost forgotten about them.------------- Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

Well said, Andy  ! It seems that some people are taking your tastes a bit too personally. I am a huge Caravan fan, but would never think of taking you to task because you don't share my views. Anyway, as regards the RPI stuff, since you live in Europe, have you tried BTF? They tend to have decent prices, and are one of the very best sources of Italian prog. I know that none of the Zeuhl is bolded, but have you heard Dün or Weidorje or Happy Family? They're all instrumental (with a few quick vocal sections here and there on the Dün and Weidorje), I don't know if that will affect how you look at them. Also, since you like some Zeuhl and love Univers Zero and Present...you'd probably really enjoy Shub-Niggurath's Les Morts Vonte Vite. It's got some of the Zeuhl heaviness and a lot of the Univers Zero darkness. That's all I can think of now, if anything more comes to mind I'll let you know. You can get the mp3 download of discipline's unfolded like staircase on amazon for $5, though if youre like me you'd probably prefer to get the cd. If you like peter hammill and vdgg id expect you would like that album. Also a couple of my friends with tastes similar to yours really like coheed and cambria, so if you havent heard anything at all at least check them out |

Oh, you like Comus! You'd probably really enjoy Jan Dukes de Grey's album Mice and Rats in the Loft and probably Spirogyra's albums. I've only heard their first, so I don't know which is best, but it's good.

We have two Spirogyra albums, and I believe they should be an automatic recommendation for anyone into Comus - though they are in no way so dark and disturbing. |

Do you know these boys - seems to me similar to a few of the bands in Bold like Between the Buried and Me, Cynic the 2009 album FrAme is great.
Hourglass's "Oblivious To The Obvious" and Exivious self titled 2009 album.
More in the heavy end could be Sepultura's "Roots" (this may be too much i dono)
Maby Shogon's - Trivium
On the instrumental side You should def. check out :
Bill Rieflin/Robert Fripp/Trey Gunn's : "The Repercussions of Angelic Behavior" got the feeling You will like that one.
I c you got soft maschine on your list, have you checked out any Robert Wyatt solo stuff.
I personaly love the wierd 1971 "The End of an Ear"
Talking about wierd post punk band Pere Ubu, is a sure laugh, if you are interested in experimental music.
No Talk Talk on your list, especialy the last album Laughing Stock is great, very calm and relaxing, at the same time very inteligent music.
Laurie Anderson's Mister Heartbreak, i have to recomand anyone interested in non mainstream music,
not that im sure you will like her though.
Thats what i could come up with for now, took me some time to post this may be others allready mentioned some of it. ?

So I have no idea if you would like my sugestions but if you have an oportunity you might just as well try them: Harmonium, specially Si on Avait besoin d'une Cinquiem Saison (somehow similar to Gabriel era Genesis and early King Crimson - the soft songs; with nice flutes); Focus, specially Hamburger Concerto and Moving Waves (similar to Jethro Tull); Metamorfosi: Inferno (RPI, don't know whom to compare the to, but so far my fav RPI -not that I know much about it anyway); Haggard (Doom Metal - with growls - many slow quiet parts with folk or classical sounds, and ofcourse, operatic vocals). |

I know you enjoy Opeth so I would suggest getting the two last Shining albums. Kind of a black metal take on Opeth to simplify things. Have you heard anything by Gorguts? Their guitarist played with Toby Driver at the stone gigs in NYC, and they're really great avant metal. Sounds a little like early motW although with more thrash elements.

If you like Edge of Sanity (assuming you have the 2 Crimson albums and Purgatory Afterglow), you need to check out some more Swanö stuff. Here's some of my favorite bands he's been involved in (aside from EoS). Nightingale - dark neo-prog (get The Closing Chronicles) Unicorn - superb neo-prog (Ever Since is far better than their sophomore album) Pan.Thy.Monium - Avant-garde metal. Really weird stuff. Bloodbath - old school Swedish death metal (Mikael Akerfeldt is on the first album) -------------

You got NINs Ghosts I-IV? If not then buy it, it's kinda experimental and dark industrial ambient, their best one so far. Fear Falls Burning is good kinda Sunn O)))-ish ambient, maybe a bit less metal. The Infinite Sea of Sustain DVD is good to start with, containing 6 whole live performances = 4,5 hours + it has the most beautiful packaging I've ever seen! More in the prog/alt territory I would suggest Oceansize, great richly textured and layered proggy rock. If you like old Mastodon you should get Lifesblood and Slick Leg 7" eps, but they both can be found on the Call of the Mastodon CD wich is lot easier to find. |

I notice you bolded Univers Zero and Present. My natural reaction is to recommend Art Zoyd - similar vein as those two but unique at the same time. I'll also recommend Far Corner, specifically their debut - more modern chamber prog with some unique fretless bass playing and distorted cello. Edit: Oh, and I noticed you haven't heard any Hoyry-Kone... definitely get the album in my avatar - essential avant-prog. (It's out-of print though, so you'll probably have to get it from a blog or something) |

Nice list of bands. I note there is no Emerson,Lake and Palmer??? With Par Lindh on the list not sure why.With ELP anything they recorded 1970-1974 is worth checking out.Start with the debut and work through the catalogue chronologically:

I would avoid compilations as they are not very good IMO although if you did stumble across it then:
The Atlantic Years (2CD).Covers their classic seventies stuff only.Nice artwork as well.
