Tried the search function, found some dusty and locked threads from yesteryear.

So here's a new thread for discussing and appreciating this lovely band that's quite a new discovery for me. Perhaps not of interest to all proggers, but definitely for fans of quirky, idiosyncratic rock.

I love the first three albums, which are the ones I've really been giving time. Graceful, intricate, strange, larger-than-life, powerful and...you know...great stuff!

I'd love to have seen this band live. If you have live experiences, please share.

Detractors - KEEP OUT...or I'll send the dogs after you.

The album that hooked me was Viva.  Never saw them live.  Also a huge fan of Phil Manzanera's solo stuff, which isn't as much appreciated around here as it should be.

Roxy certainly isn't one of the easier ones to get into.  Bryan's earlier vocal style in particular probably puts a lot of people off.  He got a lot smoother over the years.  I find them to be a bit of an acquired taste, but one well worth developing.

It's a shame that the retrospective video, Total Recall, isn't available on DVD.  I have an old VHS tape that I transferred to DVD to preserve.

I'm not sure which Roxy Music album this track is on but I was plain vanilla flabbergasted when I heard In Every Dream Home a Heartache for the first time a few years ago. I never thought Roxy were capable of something like that (it almost pre-empted the Cure in places to my ears)

Is it true that Davy O'List from the Nice joined an early Roxy line up for a while ? (and if so did he play on any albums ?)

1) That is one great song. Very powerful. Stark, moody, mesmerizing, disturbing.

I blew up your body...

2) No idea

I love Manzanera's album Diamond Head. And the related 801 Live project is good fun.

His voice might be a bit strange in the beginning, yes, but it's so important to that early sound. Sleazy, crooning, over-the-top vibrato. I guess it's a bit love-or-hate Smile

I actually saw them live a long time ago - I believe it was 1980 or so, when they played a date in Rome in the moat of Castel Sant'Angelo. At the time, I was still rather inexperienced about music, but I remember enjoying the gig (and Bryan FerryWink) very much. Obviously, it would have been even better to have seen them with John Wetton and Eddie Jobson, but you can't always get what you want.

Anyway, both Micky and I are big fans of the band, and have all their studio albums up to Siren, and then three live albums - Viva! (a masterpiece), Heart Still Beating, and a bootlegg-y thing we found in a store in downtown DC, called The Pride and the Pain, recorded in 1973. Poor sound quality, but great setlist! I am familiar with their later albums too, which make excellent listening even if they are 'pop-rock', and will get them as soon as possible.

It seems there is no way to get them movedCry. Micky and Dean tried several times, but the Admins won't let them out of PR.

That's fair. I just don't particularly care for it personally. Not a categorisation thing.

I've always hated Bryan Ferry Wink Seriously...  first four albums are classic, and Avalon is one of my wife's favourites (she likes him too!).

Another Roxy fan here. The first two albums are great of course, but I'm also very fond of Stranded and Country Life (Eddie Jobson, like Roxy itself, is hugely underappreciated on PA). Roxy Music were way ahead of their time and are certainly more than just prog-related.

Roxy Music also sound surprisingly fresh, even today (and especially compared to their prog contemporaries save Pink Floyd). They are indeed a bit of an acquired taste though...

Well, I need not tell you that I am huge fan, getting the debut album before it was even released to the public and I have been mesmerized ever since. Saw them live 5 times (with Wetton, Jobson -whom I met- among others). They were shockingly fresh and I remember the thunder of Re-Make /Re-Model when I played it on school radio! Priceless!
Evolving into a smoother style later, they are more "romantic" than prog but live the magic was electric with Mackay, Manzanera and Thompson shining brightly. Needless to say, I have all their albums , solo stuff and DVDs . Ferry remains a lyrical giant too -check out the words on those first 2 albums WOW!

the bogus man and for your pleasure actually scared me. The gruop's deep intelligence seemed to play sideways, at times, wth eno. We enjoyed the spacious jamming to never-never land. This group was definetly a trip. On "sunset" the way ferry is tripping at the sun on the globe is funny.

Valerie please believe
It never could work out
The time to make plans
Has passed, faded away
Oooh the way you look
Makes my starry eyes shiver
Then I look away
Too much for one day
One thing we share
Is an ideal of beauty
Treasure so rare
That even devils might care
Your swimming-pool eyes
In sea breezes they flutter
The coconut tears
Heavy-lidded they shed
Swaying palms at your feet
You're the pride of your street
While you worship the sun
Summer lover of fun
Gold number with neighbours
Who said that you'll go far
Maybe someday be a star
A fast mover like you
And your dreams will all come true

All of my hope, and my inspiration
I drew from you
Our life's pattern's drawn in sand
But the winds could not erase
The memory of your face
Deep in the night
Plying very strange cargo
Our soul-ships pass by
Solo trips to the stars - in the sky
Gliding so far
That the eye cannot follow
Where do they go
We'll never know
BEAUTY QUEEN  Amazing!

Hi,

Roxy Music was always tough for a lot of folks that like "progressive" music ...

In a way, it was a perfect mix for the new FM radio stations in America then, as the music was a bit more serious and well defined instead of just another pop giggle or hook. However, as time went by, I think the band got bigger for the wrong reasons, and that hurt the music some and Bryan ended up doing some of the best things on his own, but the stuff with the band is nothing to sneer at.

The most important part of the lyrical content of Roxy Music, is that it was not a "singer" per se ... but an "actor" a lot more than it was a singer, and Bryan's detailed style and application of the words, made the music seem like ... different. It would be hard to appreciate this amidst so much meaningless pop music and bubble gum music ... and Roxy Music ended up carving out its own stake in another area of rock music. To my ears, this is an actor at the top of his game, and it's a shame that it helped start up a glam scene in England that had not a whole lot of talent behind it to show for the acting ... most of it was just some more variations on pop music ... at least the music and the dressing up of Bryan's band made some sense.

Phil Manzanera has a large history of experimentation, specially his solo albums, and some would come out as hit and miss, but it's hard not to appreciate Mato Grosso as much as Diamond Head or K-Scope or Primitive Guitars ... or go as far back as his earlier forays into music.

The others ... hit and miss. I don't think that John Wetton was half as good as the original, or after bass player. Eddie Jobson was more interesting and added a more rock style to the music and Country Life is massive, and the violin added a nice touch here and there. And Duncan McKay ... as usual, is so understated and concentrates on the fills so nicely and never takes the stage from Bryan, and I think that is the mark of a really good musician ... he just does his thing.

In the end, and I have not checked the time span, I would think that Avalon is a sad song for him, when his wife left him for a bigger star! ...

Well I'll be damned

Duncan established a progressive music venue in Jeppe Street, Johannesburg, called the “Branch Office.” It was here that he established his unique multi-keyboard technique. In 1973, he was heard by A&R man, Peter Knight Jnr. of Phonogram Records and invited to travel back to the United Kingdom to join up with Ginger Baker’s new band. He moved on to team up with Gary Moore and Jon Hiseman’s band “Coliseum 2.”

In 1975, he joined ‘Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel’. “Come Up And See Me, Make Me Smile” went to No1 in the UK and Europe. This was followed by extensive touring and a further 4 gold albums. During this time Duncan released his 2nd solo album “Score” published by EMI Records. This album has become a collector’s item in recent years.

Duncan did much session work during this time, at the famous “Abbey Road Studios”. He played, on the first 3 Kate Bush albums one being "The Kick Inside" which included the hit "Wuthering Heights", three Alan Parsons Projects (Producer of “Dark Side of The Moon”), "I, Robot" (1977 Arista); "Pyramid" (1978 Arista) "Eve" (1979 Arista) and with rock groups such as “Camel” and “Budgie”. In 1978 he composed and released his 3rd solo album ‘VISA’

Roxy Music Will be Performing at Sónar 2010 Barcelona

Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and the original Roxy Music drummer, Paul Thompson, will be playing their only concert in Spain, almost three decades after their last show in Barcelona.

The British band, a paradigm of art rock, glam and the experimental pop of the 70s and early 80s, will be performing their hits at Sónar by Night.

Sónar Barcelona also confirms the shows by New Young Pony Club (UK), Aufgang (FR), Post War Years (UK), Caspa feat. MC Rod Azlan (UK) and Cabo San Roque (ES).

As of today a part of the Sónar 2010 film, “Finisterrae”, will be shown on Sónar’s website. This part is entitled “Tuning In”.

Tickets for Sónar Barcelona and Sónar Galicia for 17th, 18th and 19th June are on sale now at http://www.sonar.es/ - www.sonar.es .

Roxy Music, one of the great icons of contemporary pop

Roxy Music can be proud of a career in which they have experimented with many different styles: rock, pop, disco, glam, soul and touches of original electronica. Their sound was a predecessor of punk, redefined glam, was one of the standard bearers of art rock and was the foundation for other genres, from krautrock to electronica. Their most popular hits remain a benchmark for today's music: from Love Is The Drug and More Than This, as well as Angel Eyes, Same Old Scene, Avalon and Jealous Guy.

As well as Roxy Music, Sónar 2010 confirms 5 other shows in Barcelona: Read more

Sónar 2010 is taking place in Barcelona and A Coruña on 17th, 18th and 19th June.

Roxy was the birth of Eno, no doubt in my mind the one most influencial Producer of my time.
He has shown so many times an unik ability to turn artist minds and get the best out of them.
Bowie, U2, Talking Heads.

Roxy was great, and very important in the development of Art Rock
Seen them live when they reformed in early 2000's, was a great show.
